Looks like you have either had a lot of fun in this hat, or it is a very good job of distressing. ;) Either way it is a fine looking fedora. :TOH:

I was able to get this look with some Fullers earth and a dry paintbrush, applying the earth specifically to this area.
Hey, thanks for the great tip!!!

I did not use fullers earth. I burned a half of bag of BBQ charcoal in the grill and collected the clean white/grey ash that is left over ( I didn't cook any burgers... I didn't want a greasy hat).
I put that ash in a sock and used it on my Jacket and Hat.
The best part is it will Vac right out!!
The downside... is since it comes out , you may have to reapply it to keep the look ( I kept the ash and sock in a container in the car, just in case.)

I will try the dry brush on the bottom of the ribbon with the ash and see how it turns out.

So my wonderful girlfriend bought me an Uptowner for Christmas. I've been wanting to post some better pics, but these are what I have for now. It's a wonderful hat. I really think this will be with me for years and can't wait to see how it ages. EDIT: 2/10/10 - The center crease had popped out some in these pictures. I pushed it in deeper and with a little reinforcement it has stayed pretty well now. Front dent too...it really is just getting better and better...i'll try to replace these photos at some point.

Yes, this hat looks very good. I didn't expect to see such good looking photos. Todd surprises and impresses!

I got lucky, having I believe the only one with this style ribbon, as his latest shipment all arrived with this "wrong" ribbon, but I liked and wanted to keep it. All the others have had the ribbons swapped out to a more SA style as stated on his website. But with this hat, it wasn't about any particular look but it's just a REAL NICE HAT that fits everything, IMO.

It does. But I don't think it was meant as a "Raiders" hat, or trying to replicate any scene (although sometimes the Raiders hat, IMO, does have some back taper), but it's more of just a really nice "everything" hat. For that, it fits the bill perfectly. The felt is so nice it feels like it should have an Elvis painting on it. Not really, but it's just so velvety :)

But Holt said it best regarding the back of the hat

Love my Uptowner too :) It's still my hat of choice over my Henry (it just has a better brim shape that I can't quite replicate with the Henry)

Im not big on ultrascreenaccuracy either. I love my FedIV the way Ive got it bashed, and its certainly not 'screen accurate.' Its more like 'screen-reminiscent.' ;)

There you go. Uptowner is the first shot :TOH: Sightly defeated the point of the post as the Henry looked so hideous I had to apply some steam and adjust the brim again. Looks a lot better now. Doh!

One question I had for Uptowner owners is the sweat sewn at the brim break?

yes it is (or just slightly above). what would be the alternative, being glued in?

I don't think that's what he meant. He wants to know if the location of the sweatband is at the brim break.

I would love to see a side shot. Now every hat can get bumped around during shipping and even flatten out the brim a bit. I would like to help get your brim looking the way you would like. Didn't like reading that you thought the Henry was hideous.

It's just a standard Henry - the dimensions are just about identical to the Uptowner above it. Now I've tweaked the brim again I'm actually ok with it so don't worry Oak! :TOH:

I don't think it looks too big. It might just be an optical illusion. The ribbon on mine is right at 1.5"

You're right, it is an optical illusion. Looks like the Uptowner is a pretty close match for the Henry - but I can't imagine it feeling as velvety smooth!

here's that thread...

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=43596&start=0&hilit=henry+uptowner

i know I was having a small temporary problem getting one of the bashes to stay in mine because of how soft the felt is. It's settled in nicely now and I like the hat more and more. It makes a really nice LC hat, and I was watching TOD to get some screen shots of the bridge scene, and it looks like a lot like the "good-looking" hat in ToD, with boxier sides and a nice taper to the back...

I've been in the 'Gear' hobby for less than four months now and I can say with pride how happy I am with not only the selection of items available on the market, but with the wealth of knowlege found right here.
I am curious to see an uptowner being worn with full Todd's gear - a lot of gearheads here mix-n-match, like I have done.

Uptowner came!

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. I'll post pictures soon-- I'm down with an awful cold right now and look too terrible for photographs. Besides, I have a massive exam on Mesopotamian, Egyptian and Aegean art tomorrow that I need to study for...

I really do like it an awful lot-- it's a bit of a shock though seeing myself in such a wide-brim. I almost never wear a hat of any sort and such a big one really just is jarring... I'm sure I'll grow out of that soon.

Two things that I'm a little unsure about though--

1. It seems just a hair tight, but if I went a size bigger I think it'd be too big. Right now it rests right on the top of my ears. Will it shrink a lot... is it perhaps something I should trade in and let the larger size shrink?
2. I'm shocked by how stiff it was. Indyclone's pics showed the brim laying flat when rested on a table. Not mine; mine holds its shape.

But those are minor quibbles, really. This hat is gorgeous. I'm very satisfied.

Thanks Todd!

mine is a size 57 and my downtowner is a size 58 , my uptowner is a bit tight too but as i have had it 6 months now it feels better and hasnt shrunk on me , the only reason i got the 57 was at the time they were sold out of 58's but i am happy. i fall in that weird space between 57 and 58 :D

Thanks-- not sure I really need it any longer. Two days of wearing it around and it's conformed to my head pretty nicely.

Glad I didn't order a size up, actually. I hit my first gust of wind today and it was everything I could do to keep it from taking flight.

I really adore this hat, I must say. Absolutely a fantastic offering from Todd.

The hat looks really natural on you, too.

Thank ya, sir!

The hat really does feel as if it's become a part of me.

Actually my buddy described it as "drunk/ hungover," but long day was more the look I was going for.

It's great how much Todd's hat captures the vibe at such a great price.

Cheers! :TOH:

Yeah, the hat's already taken on a lot of character since then. It got a bit abused the other day but bounced right back. Definitely my favorite piece so far from Todd.

I have ordered ribbon from Todd's, and have both the Uptowner and Downtowner. The ribbon on my Uptowner was exactly the same as the ribbon I've gotten from Todd's, but quite different from the brown ribbon on the Downtowner.

I bought my Uptowner the first week that Todd started selling them.

Mine has really been put through the ringer and it still going strong.

I do yard work in mine.

My favorite hats used to be ball caps but this is much better at keeping the sun out my face while mowing. When its dirty just use a vac with the brush attachement and it looks good as new.

No wonder this style of hat has been around do long. Its just so versatile!!

I have a Penman that I wear to events ( it is in a class by itself) but I just can’t bring myself to mistreat it.

My Uptowner has become my “old beater” hat .

Hopefully someday it will look like the Raiders Cairo hat but at this rate it may be a while
