That hat is beautiful, simply beautiful. That truly is my favorite AB. Looks great on you too, Mark. And I love the way that camel ribbon looks on that sahara felt. Really offsets it. What a fantastic combination. Steve, great freaking work here. And Mark, you wear it well. Thanks for posing for the shot and thank you, DEM, for taking it and posting it.

Looks great on you, Michaelson, but what happened to the mutton chops!?!?

Have to say, once again, Art is vindicated: the vintage ribbon is far better than the new stuff. -M

An excellent chap/hat match-up going on there.
:TOH:

Something tells me that with THAT lid on your head, you'd have that sparkle in your eye even if you weren't wearing specs! ;)
Sincere thanks to you - and yours - for the trouble and effort (and assistance) in getting this photo posted, Michaelson!

I don't get it. Michaelson looks younger each time I see a picture of him, yet I look older with each pic. No fair!
Why is Art vindicated
Oh, I had mentioned at one point that I was copying Art. Art is well known for using interesting ribbon/felt combos. Fedora

Did you ever read the book 'Picture of Dorian Gray'? :-k :[

Considering how few photos there ARE of me on the internet, there aren't that many data points to work with, Steve!

LOL! :rolling:

Hummm. That one of yours looks like a good avatar to me!!

Well, with bink's information.....consider the source..... :Plymouth:

That's the absolute neat thing about Steve's hats. He's made them for me for SO long now, I don't think twice when a box arrives about if it will fit. I KNOW it will fit. I swear he knows my head shape/sizing better than I do. I just pull the hat out of the box, put it on, and go my merry way. Always have, and I guess I always will. It's one of those simple pleasures in life knowing someone knows you well enough to be able re-create the same quality over and over again.

Thank you for your kind remarks! :TOH:

Thank you very much!

Just a side note...one of my fondest memories regarding this subject was back in the day when Steve and I used to email back and forth regarding HJ's. He was trying to convince me that soft felt was the way to go, but at the time I was a hard core 'stiff felt' man. Boy has THAT changed! #-o

Anyway, one thing we BOTH agreed on at that time was that neither one of us could EVER see us being comfortable ordering and owning something like an HJ. At the time it was just over $200 in price, and it being an extremely windy Springtime that year, we just didn't want to take a chance of having to chase such an expensive hat down the street!
MY how times have changed!!!!

Back to the hat in question, it's definitely had it's share of compliments from strangers as well.

Regards! Michaelson

Come on, folks, it's the Pecard treatments he gives himself that keep him looking so young. But I still stand by the fact that he's older than dirt. [-(

My friend, that hat compliments you beautifully.

That, and (other than Steve in this thread), Art is the only person I've seen maintaining that vintage ribbon is innately superior to modern ribbon. Steve used vintage ribbon on that hat, so I was in a round-about sort of way indicating that I really liked the way the ribbon on that hat looked. -M

I don't think I've ever heard any hatter say that modern ribbon, or felt is better than vintage. Every hatter I've ever spoken to has a stock of some vintage ribbon. I don't know where you are getting that from, but I can tell you that any time I've spoken to AB, Penman, Optimo, Tumwater, Brown, you name it, they always mention that they have vintage ribbon. Now, out of those guys, there are only two I do business with and that's AB and Penman, but all hatters keep a stock of vintage stuff. They all say its better.

I didn't say anyone claimed modern was better, I was merely claiming that Art is the only person I've seen who goes out of his way to put it on his site that he uses exclusively vintage AND gives his reasons on said site. I've never seen anyone else do that. Honestly, I don't see why that comment is attracting so much attention. Steve got what I was saying, does anything else matter? -M

The thing about vintage ribbon, is there is such a variety of colors that have been dropped in modern ribbon. And Art is constantly on the lookout for the vintage stuff. I heard he and Mike Moore just bought a load recently. Personally, I like the vintage ribbon better than the new stuff. You see more variety in patterns, on the old stuff too. Now, you can still get great ribbon from Schiff and Offray, if you get a special run done, and there is a coop of hatters today that go in on special runs, as you have to buy mega yards to even get it.

Art's market is the vintage look fedoras, and he has to have great ribbon to pull this off, as he uses vintage combinations of felt color and ribbon color. I would imagine Art has more vintage ribbon than most. He turned me on to a load of it a few years ago, from B and L. Very pricey stuff, but well worth it.

Mulcebar, I knew exactly what you were talking about. Art and I go aways back, and I can attest to the fact this hatter is an artsy hatter. I mean that in a good way. He loves the variety of colors that vintage hats were made in, with interesting ribbon combos. And loves to make them. Fedora

Michaelson, I'm glad to finally see you with your fedora. I know you were wishing you could have gotten the one I got from Steve. Yours looks really fantastic. I love this color, it's hard to photograph and get it to look the way it does in real life.

Pulling this out of the depths of 2010 posts, I pulled out my Sahara AB today to wear.

Still looks as good as it did the day I got it back in 2010....which blows my mind that it's already 3 years old!

I can't believe I never commented on this thread the first time around (unless some posts got lost in a crash/reboot).

In any case, I know exactly what you mean since I have the twin to this hat - same felt, ribbon, size and block used.

I'm thrilled the weather here is getting so I can switch back to felt hats (though today was a straw day).

I absolutely love what I call my Sahara colored 'Michaelson' lid. :M:

Indiana Jeff

I have two Indy hats on order from Steve from way back in the day. I may have to change one of them to this color and style. Hmm... Should I give up my "Idol Grab" or "Streets of Cairo"? :-k

Assuming this color felt and ribbon are still available. Anyone know?

I already have a 2nd hand rabbit AB and recently purchased a 2nd hand Henry. Depending on what I think of the Henry, I would seriously consider changing one my orders to this style. decisions, decisions...

Sahara is a standard offering from Winchester and thus still available. You'd have to ask Steve about the ribbon.
