Wait a second... so this means Fedora is making his feds in rabbit again? I'm confused...

Thanks for the help Croft! :D

CD - Fedora offered up the last few rabbit bodies he had in his shop back in October. A bunch of us jumped in and snatched them up and Fedora said that they would be the last rabbits coming out of his shop. There are still a few of us waiting to get our rabbits in as Fedora has been working them in with his other orders so those are the rabbit ABs you'll be seeing.

:rolling: Ok I about died reading that...especially considering that for about a month I called home everyday to ask if my hat was there. It just makes the wait harder seeing pics of the great rabbit ABs...but not too hard considering I went ahead and put in an order for a beaver AB. :D

kev my friend, i think i've reached the point in the hobby where waiting is now half the fun :D

i got in the situation where finally everything was received / nothing was left to be delivered....and it kinda felt empty. i was looking on e-bay to buy something small just to get that "now all i have to do is wait for it to show up" feeling.....ahhhhh now release the seratonin \:D/

i'm willing to bet you have not reached my purchasing enlightenment just yet so i will send you positive vibes in receiving your bunny hat the next time i meditate and leave my body

IG - I appreciate the positive vibes. I actually do kinda enjoy the wait. It's nice to know that sometime soon I'm going to have a fantastic hat...and then even more in the future another fantastic hat. :D

I've been better waiting for the AB, I was about to die waiting for my wested...but I got some meds to make every other wait better.

Very nice, Croft! I think I like your crown better than mine, but I like my brim.

And I realized I never posted pics of mine - or made an announcement that I'd gotten it. So here's pics of my Rabbit AB! These were taken only with flash - that's why I'm pale and my hat looks orange.

Image

I feel like I need to find some way to tighten my pinch... what do you think?

aha! i knew your eyes weren't blue

i think fedora matched your facial shape to the hat much better this go round. it looks like in order to compliment your vertical features, he shaved some brimmage off....no? the additional flanging/curling on the brim makes it look almost like a stingy brim imo. i would probably snap the brim down more (much like the tod hat) to give it some more girth around the crown.

and as far as tightening the pinch....just keep pinching and playing with it everytime you wear it. you'll get her trained in no time.

congrats and enjoy mcfly!

ps - can i have it?

lol yes it's true... my eyes are red. He did trim off some of the brim, yes. But also, it is pretty stiff, so it doesn't really "snap." I don't really like the brims down so much in the front, and I do like my brims to curl. That's one of my favorite things with this hat, is the curled brim.

Anyway - I'm waiting (or at least I think I am) for an AB Beaver now. (Steve?) Maybe it'll be better next time. What improvements could be made? I think if I just grew a little, I could get a taller crown (to get the dent deeper and the front/back taper not as prominent, which is probably hard to do on a small crown).

In Christ,
Shane

ps - no. :P

How does one go around getting beaver fur anyway? Do you just attack a beaver with a razor?

Since they are not generally farmed(hard to do) trappers harvest them. Since they will gnaw their own legs off to escape, back when I used to try and trap them, I set the traps so the critter drowns. Very humane by the way. So, in order to get beaver fur, you first must have to kill it. You skin the beaver in a certain way so you can stretch it on a round frame. Then you sell them.

They are bought by the garment industry and the hat industry. If used for hats, they are processed and the underfur removed.

China has pushed up the price for all furs, including beaver. So much so, that there were shortages earlier this year and last year as well. Trappers love it as it puts more money in their pockets.

Don't worry about them becoming extinct though. The Wildlife Dept's of all states basically would limit the number harvested if they were ever depleted to a certain level. Down here in the South, they are a huge nusance. Business's have sprung up to set barriers so they don't clog up highway culverts, etc. Too much info? typical of any response you get from me. Fedora

No, I mean yours. That hat is just too dang wide, and does not look right. Maybe its a camera distance thing. If it is not, you need a slimmer hat. I have seen a few of these over the years, and have one back now from Ken that needs the crown narrower. I think it is the slim faces that are doing this. I find that fitting hats to slim faces is the hardest thing to do, and takes a few times to get it right. Full faces and regular faces are so much easier. Again, it may just be the camera is too close, but I could not sit back and say it looked fine. It doesn't. Fedora

Come on Shane makes things easier for Fedora. Eat some food!! Snickers and fudge rounds should work. I can't read the label on that can of beaver, but I beat it is full of calories too! :D

Hmmm... :-k Do you mean in the brim or the crown? The crown is a little tight on me as it is - I get a little red line across my head. It doesn't really hurt to wear it but it leaves a mark. I can't imagine it being any narrower! When I first got it it was definitely not right, and I sent to back to be made into a long oval - apparently that's what it is now; I wouldn't be able to tell you if my life depended on it. Maybe I need an extra long oval?  Maybe just a shorter brim - which I wouldn't mind. Whenever we get my beaver order going, we'll see what we can do to make it fit better.

Shane

why don't you just spec your incoming ab beaver to the same spec as the akubra that you have. isn't it the same one in your avatar? i think that looks good on you.

Posted: Wed Jun 20, 2007 1:44 pm
by McFly
Well here's another pic of my AB, and then a pic of my Akubra, respectively:

Image Image

My Akubra, since the incident where it got lost in San Francisco and was returned to me months later, has never looked the same... so I wouldn't know how to spec it! And the Beaver I'm thinking I'll get styled differently than the Raiders hat so I'm not sure how that'll look. My Akubra is a size smaller though... maybe I should get a smaller AB and just stretch it on my head.

I do really like the width of the brim on the Akubra a lot though - the front and back widths (as in my avatar) I think are really nice.  Maybe I should send Steve my Akubra when he's ready to make the Beaver, and he can look at it and use it as a reference. :?: Hmm?

In Christ,
Shane

I think the hat loks wide because it has little to no centre dent. The side dents make the hat bulge out unless you put in a nice centre dent which pulls the sides back in again. I'll bet that'll make the hat appear a little slimmer.

I know several guys who eat the beavers they trap, some have even tried the tails.

Anyways, on the topic of Adventurebilts, in 6-8 months I will be the proud owner of a new pure beaver Raiders Adventurebilt! My money went in the mail today and now the long wait begins...

Shane, I don't think it looks like a bowler. Rather, it's the angle at which your hat sits on your head which doesn't show the humps and pinch as much. I'm the same way. My hats sit back just a little when I wear them, so the "perfect front view" doesn't show as much unless my head is tilted down just a little.

Posted: Wed Jun 20, 2007 10:20 pm
by Castor Dioscuri
Also must be the lighting, but I'm sure this is a case of drawing invalid conclusions from a 2d image... We all know how that goes ;)

Anyways, bowler hats aren't too bad... Heck, John Steed never left home without one! :P

I played with the bash a little - I tightened the front pinch and pushed down the crease a little more in back. How's it look now? And don't lie! :P These pics are brightened a little bit.

Better, how about some shots of it outside, from a distance and with a shave. 8)

Also ever tried pulling it just a bit lower?

Posted: Thu Jun 21, 2007 5:47 pm

 A shave, eh? Well... that's not a problem... I can pull it lower but it's a little tight and even how I have it now it leaves a small red mark. I'll give it a shot though. :-k

its amazing how different camera shots give off different information to our rods and cones

that shot looks great shane and thats the honest truth.....and your knife is even bigger than vp's

i still say the hat would look better in a tod snap brim bash but that picture is definitely a huge improvement from what i saw previously.

cheers

Got a bigger version? ;) Your knife might be larger, but it's not the size it's how you use it. Mine is more accurate and I made it myself.

The brim has a bit too much curl for my Raiders-saturated taste, looks good for a LC.

Posted: Thu Jun 21, 2007 7:37 pm
by McFly
Lemme see if I have a bigger version...

Yeah, your knife is definitely more accurate - mine was a gift to me from my grandfather, years and years ago. It's not meant to be an Indy knife (it's actually a sword from India). I just wanted to take a VP pic - and we didn't have any sausages. I do like my brims to be curly though - I don't like them to look more like the Well of the Souls (which is the bash I asked for! :D) where it's a little curlier than the rest of the movie.

Does the hat still look "too wide" for my face though?

Thanks Indiana G!

EDIT: Here's a bigger version.

So for those of us who have ordered an AB hat but don't have it yet, is it helpful to send in a pic of our head to make it easier to get the shape right?

Posted: Fri Jun 22, 2007 3:41 pm

You could always just send your head. Sorry. Steve tries his best to suit the hat to the wearer's face, so if you think it'll help, it wouldn't hurt.
