That pic kind of looks fake and kind of doesn't, it's hard to tell. It seems to fit with all the background action going on. And I really am not trying to be argumentative, here, but even it THAT pic, that hat does NOT look grey! It looks like it has a frosty grey overtone, but the ribbon looks to be a dark brown and the hat a light, light heather tan!

I'm really not trying to start a war and I'm not just trying to argue with everyone. My monitor is absolutely fine! I'm using a very expensive laptop, and all colors are perfect, I just don't see a grey hat! I can see what could be mistaken as a grey hat at first glimpse! But looking very, very close, it isn't grey to me.

have a nice day.

Hey, Mr Magnoli, did you notice that everyone is just blowing over the fact that you showed what APPEARED to be a GREY suit and in fact it is LIGHT BROWN!? In that pic, it CLEARLY looks grey, but the real life description is brown. I'm tellin' ya, I think we have a break-down in communication even from the paramount people. The power of suggestion is VERY strong, and if we are told the hat is grey by an 'official' source, a lot of people will literally not believe their own eyes and just believe what they hear!

Problem here is we have THREE official sources of information, HJ (Richard Swales, maker of the two hats), Paramount prop department, and Western Costume.

No war, and no problem. If you see brown, you see brown. Folks have debated this for years, and will CONTINUE to debate it.....but according to those THREE official sources, it's not, but you can see brown if you want, TR.

Reminds of the good old days when folks absolutely stated with NO doubt in their minds that the original Raiders jacket was black. NO doubt. How many times did I read:

"YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME? Check the scene at the beginning when Indy spots the idol. The jacket is BLACK!!! Watch the tape!!!"

A fellow even special ordered a black lambskin based on what he saw, and convinced others to what he saw. It wasn't until Peter discovered the Indyfan forum that he corrected that misconception. Hummm. Should we believe THAT official source now? :-k Just kidding.

You have a nice day too. :D

Ok, I'm gonna try this one more time. I'll admitt that the suit looked gray in that one pic. But it looks brown from the most part in the movie. I just don't see brown in the hat, not at all. I don't see a hint of brown in it, none.

Now this thread could go for ever and we wouldn't have accomplished any thing more than we all ready have. None of us have solid evidence that the hat was brown or gray. All we can do is sit here and yell brown and gray at each other. Like you said in an earlier post I'm just gonna agree to disagree. :)

I'm half tempted to drive to Texas to see what the heck you're seeing Texas, because I'm in with the gray crowd and I see NO brown at all either. Not even the slightest hint. Even when I adjust my monitor. Still comes up gray.

Is there any way possible, texas, that you are the one seeing things wrong here? Could it be? Maybe?

It's just that when there are such strong forces at work against your theory, it seems rather brash to take all the evidence presented here and just throw it out the window, no? I mean, you have all these poeple who tell you they see gray, the definite majority over the years. You have the man who made the freakin' hat AND the studio who bought it and kept it stating it was gray. At this point I'd be willing to at least accept the possibility that I was slightly somehow misconceived, either by your own eyes or by the images on your hardware.

Tell you what. If ANYONE at ANYTIME can get the actual info on the color of the hat and it turns out to be brown, I'll give you $50. No joke. Now, I doubt anyone will ever be able to track it down, but if it ever turns up and we can settle this once and for all, I'll pay up if I was wrong. Will you take that bet, sir?

All this reminds me of the movie ED WOOD with Johnny Depp. Love that movie. His camera man was colorblind in the movie, and when asked which dress he liked, the red or the blue, he answers "The gray one" -

All I can say is..........................

I guess it wouldn't be helpful to say that most men are either slightly or partially colour blind?

LOL! This whole discussion reminds me of a recurring one I have with people every now and then! WHAT COLOR IS GREY?!(or red or green or whatever) . You or I might think we are seeing grey, but is grey to me REALLY grey to you? Or is it green? How do we ever really know what another person is seeing as the same color really IS the same color? Answer-we don't. It's like The Matrix line - "How do the machines really know what tasty wheat tastes like?" All it is, is the conditioning of our mind to relate a certain visual color with a certain NAME of a color. Someone could EASILY be taught wrong from the git-go, and be told all of their life that the color 'red' was the color 'grey'. And after that, you could never convince them otherwise! It's a very interesting topic to talk about.

Oh , yeah and by the way- the hat is light heather brown and I'll take that 50 dollar bet!

I just don't think they would have "Indy" change the color of hat that he wears. The brown hat is just too much of HIS signature. It's not JUST ANY fedora- it's a BROWN fedora.

AMEN, TR, AND AMEN!!! As an industrial videographer, I fight the same fight in my business...and THAT'S why professional rack
mounted video monitors and camera eyepieces are NOT color, but black and white....we can't agree on color, but we CAN agree if the picture is in focus or not! (grins)

Man, I just can't believe you guys see grey! I CAN see that the ILLUSION of grey is there because of the lighting, but I can discern between the two! IT IS A BROWN HAT (light heather taupe-ish)!! In those pics it is plain as day!! Look at that brown ribbon!!
Indiana Jones wears a BROWN HAT!! Not a grey one! I am ALMOST CERTAIN that they would keep this continuity in his costume! IT IS HIS SIGNATURE!

Yeah sorry i meant the HAT. There was no light where the hat is so it looks DARK but it doesnt mean it has to be really dark! If you compare it with black Donovan suit we can say it's BLACK so i wouldnt trust so much our eyes. Let's think deeply to the POWER of the dark side.. ehm of the exposition and the light!

Anyway guys, a little test... what colour is this at first sight for you??

Here is another point- To my knowledge, and anyone can jump in here, there has NEVER , EVER been ANY grey hat from "Indiana Jones" come up in ANY auction from the high-falutin' auction establishments OR Smithsonian or ANYWHERE. :-k . Nothing is mentioned about it in the DVD special features, I've never heard anything by Speilberg, Lucas, Noodleflyer, nada! We see plenty of brown hats, shirts, jackets, whips, holsters. NO GREY HATS!

Have a nice day.

Is this string still going on?!

Why should there be? Folks would be debating whether or not they were real too, just like is being done right here, and they wouldn't bring the price they'd hope. Folks just KNOW all the hats were 'brown', and the grays would probably be passed by. Also considering there were only two made, they're MUCH rarer, and probably ended up in someone's private collection. Swales made a TON of brown HJ's, and they're a dime a dozen. Heck, there's literally a BOX full in the warehouse at Skywalker ranch left over from LC!.

You can keep hammering on this, but it just doesn't change the fact that the hats in the mentioned scenes were gray, were made by Swales, were remembered by the Paramount prop department, AND Western Costume only a couple years after the making of the movie (unlike the rememberances shot for the DVD's, which were made from DECADES old memories), and constantly repeating it's not so won't change those facts...but, if it makes you happy, carry on. Personally, I'm done with this one myself....just play nice while you're continuing the debate... ](*,)

As an aside, I remember on the DVD extra disc Deborah N. saying that the character was described as a "Man in a Gray hat." And if you look at the screen tests, you see Magnum P.I. and others wearing a gray fedora. So, beside the information Michaelson has, here is further justification for gray hats to be around the production.

Well, then, there, now. I walked in my son's room a while ago and saw the Raiders DVD lying there, and mentioned this discussion to my wife. So I popped the DVD in, fast forward to the clipper and asked my wife, "what color is Indy's hat?" and she said "Brown". WHOA!!! And I have to admit when I viewed it, It didn't look as grey as it has in other viewings. She repeated, "a faded brown"

So I took the DVD and put it in the newest tv and dvd player in the house and I was amazed at the difference and clarity in the colors. The suit was a richer brighter blue and his hat was definitely gray with a black ribbon. I could not believe the differences in the colors between the two tv monitors. I firmly believe the hat is gray but I also believe that when Texas Raider says he is seeing brown, he probably is, because admittedly on my oldest tv, it really didn't look that gray either. On my newest tv. In fact, the separation of all the colors was much better and they were much more vivid than I had ever noticed before. I'm sure the age of the older tv and possibly even the adjustments could be contributing factors as to why my wife said it was brown. She has seen the movie but not like my kids and I have watched it so she was being totally objective.
Ever go to the tv store where all of the monitors have the same channel playing and no two sets have the same color balance?
By the way, when I showed it to her on the new tv, she did admit the hat was gray.
