DoD IM BACK PACK

Post by Indiana Croft »

As I stated in another thread, I waited to long to snag a Frost River Geologist back pack, aka the one used in the movie, just no patch.
So, Indy Magnoli to the rescue.
Ordered one up, came in recently, haven't had a chance to use it, but I needs to break it in.

Couple of question, is the back in DoD waxed? Everyone on the the other thread makes mention they had to re-wax the flap in order to get rid of the patch.
If yes, how hard is it to do.

IM Back pack very well made and looks spot on, straps may be a little darker, but I'm pleased with my new piece of gear.
Now to fill it, rope shouldn’t take long with a search, rope is rope, but the I was looking at some shovels which looks like he put in the smaller pocket.
Here's two I found.
Thought's :-k

Flash light is still in search mode, found some close enough, the search continues.

Oh and Hats off to IM for making an affordable piece of gear. :TOH:

The Frost River packs are waxed.

Waxing it isn’t hard, tons of videos online.

The caution I will give is many of the wax formulas you’ll find in the videos are 20% beeswax and 80% paraffin wax. I used this to wax a jacket and it was too much paraffin. The jacket was stiff as a board and I ended up using a heat gun and brown paper to pull as much wax out of the jacket as I could.

I would recommend either buying wax made to wax cotton, or go with at most 50% paraffin.

I had to rewax the shoulders of another waxed jacket and just used beeswax.

The backpack looks great, awesome get, Croft. And the whip is awesome too.

I don't know much about waxing, only seen some vids on youtube ...but regarding the shovel, I kind of like the second one. Though I remember an older thread where someone mentioned the handle might be some kind of pickaxe? In my opinion, I side with you, it is a folding trench shovel. :TOH:

Thanks Indiana Jeff.
I will do some research, thought I’d read Frost River has it, might be the correct formula.
One question, is the one in the movie waxed, if it was, mighty relaxed.
But thinking of waxing it, as it’ll be easier to distress, lighter areas.

And just reread IM site for this and mentions waxed, but the canvas doesn’t feel waxed, is a waxed back pack typically this,… soft feeling.
IM this is aimed at you. :notworthy:

Thanks Bearbeast, knew you comment on the whip, that’s why it’s there.
And it has to be folding as it’s in the smaller front pocket.

My FR bag was fairly stiff when I first got it, but as my EDC it’s well broken in now and soft/floppy.

Question, and to be honest, I've never owned a waxed product before so I don't know what to expect.
IM site says
This heavy duty rucksack is made from a waxed duck cotton with leather straps
But it feels more like a heavy/lighter cotton canvas material.

The FR version from what I've read is waxed and you can tell that is. I've seen waxed jackets, and the material feels stiffer. Till broken in.
Does anyone have one and can post a picture for me.

I've no problem purchasing FR wax to treat the bag.

I've looked into this and the waxing was never done on these. It sounds like the factory misunderstood our instructions so a regular duck cotton was used. I've changed the description on our site for the meantime though we're looking into other options. As for self-waxing, otter wax is a fantastic product that we've used many times with great results. :TOH:
