Screen used bag manufacturer

Post by Jonesy Jr. »

Hello everyone. I'm new to the forums.

I have been thinking about buying Waring & Gilbow Ltd. MKVII bag. But there are also lots of bags stamped with other makers that I can get for half the price. Waring & Gilbow Ltd. brand is considered the one that was used in the movie, but could someone tell me who started this rumor ? I tried to find actual sources for this claim and I tried to find proofs like some screen grabs where flap of the bag is opened with W & G stamp visible or something but I could not find any so any info/proofs would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards

Even if the W & G bag is "positively identified as one of the versions used in the films" (as noted in the Indygear.net gear section -- https://indygear.net/indiana-jones-shoulder-bag/), is that enough to make it worth twice the price for pretty much the same bag as we can get from other vendors?

Would the bag be mainly a costume piece for you, or would it be a practical item for daily use? For tasks like carrying a laptop, as you may already have seen here on the forum, there are bags with an interior configuration that makes 'em more useful. (Is that the Magnoli bag?)

Or is the main appeal simply to have the brand Harrison Ford carried in the movies? That seems to be the reason some Indy fans are willing to pay a premium for an excellent fedora from Herbert Johnson, and if your budget can afford it, why not?

Prettt sure the rumor started because of when the cross is grabbed from the bag in LC. Realistically, they probably used more than one manufacturer. I’d just focus on the color and studs for accuracy.

I certainly can't see anything that looks like a makers stamp in the Cross scene.

I agree with you. Only thing I noticed in the Cross scene was that round brass ring inside the bag, which is also present on some of the bags made by other makers too.

Good question about the price and use of this bag. W&G bags have become more expensive since they are becoming more rare but as far as I know for now, their value increase is only based on the rumors that have been around for years now. As for the use, these bags are awesome and look cool plus they are practical (personally I only like original interior configuration which has enough space for me). I even carry them while wearing a suit for business.

You are right about using bags from multiple manufacturers. I doubt prop team have paid any attention to manufacturer, they probably just bought dozen of those bags for filming. There were at least two bags in Raiders. One with nickel O-rings for strap and one with nickel D-rings for strap. And I noticed nickel O-ring in ToD during "no pilots in plane" scene and dark O-rings during scene where Indy puts Sankara stones into the bag (after fight after being woken from sleep of Kali, not before being captured). The ones in LC looks most pristine of all bags (maybe some were remade by prop team?), as for KotCS, bag from LC was used in some scenes, but mostly they used exact replicas made by prop department for the movie.
I'm curious if the bag used in DoD is original or very good made and aged replica.

I think I remember reading somewhere on here once upon a time that the W & G theory came from a Temple stunt bag at auction having that inscription. Personally, I think the W & G marked ones are great, but the side loop always seems too small, a peculiarity to most of those marked W & G. The little metal circle can be seen inside the bag in LC and in behind the scenes shots from the beginning of KOTCS. Most W & G’s that I have seen don’t have that. They seem to be a bit rarer. I think most here know this, but smooth snaps were used for the first four movies and the more decorative snaps were used for DOD. Generally speaking?, in my experience, most of the bags with smooth snaps are on bags with a “looser weave” to the fabric, while the decorative buttons seem to be on bags with a “tighter weave” to the fabric, though I have seen an exception to this with one bag having smooth snaps, a tight weave and a darker than normal green! Oh, and the side loos come in two different colors- tan and a more white color.

That's actually very plausible theory.

I think unless you have one in a display, open, with a big neon arrow pointing at the maker's mark, there's little to no reason to worry about getting a W&G.

Partly because it's just not necessary - despite some cosmetic peculiarities, a Mk VII bag is a Mk VII bag - and partly because I don't support vendors gouging people :whip:
