Satchel/Bag - the best repo?
Hi
I have a dilemma between the Magnolia reproduction and the Wested Leather reproduction. Which one offers the best quality, the best reproduction of the original? Which one will just be better?
Magnoli I know has something plastic, probably a rivet. Wested has very few reviews but looks better....
The old original one is out of the question - the bag wants to use EDC.
Best regards

Re: Satchel/Bag - the best repo?
If you want an EDC I recommend Magnoli with the modern interior layout. Best of both worlds, a high quality reproduction that looks the part, but more practical.

Hey.
Modern interior accoutrements do not want.
I am only interested in the quality of the tarp-.
Its thickness, stiffness and the quality of the metal fittings

I'd also recommend you look into the What Price Glory replica. I love mine. It is quite sturdy and has the same interior as the originals, with only one minor difference. The center pocket is not divided into two pockets, but rather is one large pocket. Other than that it is faithful to the original.

Re: Satchel/Bag - the best repo?
I bought from both in 2023 and they were exactly the same. Their color (when weathered) is good for Raiders/TOD/DoD, but too green for LC/KotCS.Walery wrote: ↑Wed Dec 25, 2024 5:05 pm Hi

You can go with either of them as they are both good quality. Also I didn't noticed anything plastic on either bags.
Re: Satchel/Bag - the best repo?
I understand that the stiffness of the material, its thickness, more or less the weight of both bags were the same/very similar? Thanks for the answerJonesy Jr. wrote: ↑Thu Dec 26, 2024 3:51 pmI bought from both in 2023 and they were exactly the same. Yes, mine are the same. As in material and quality. The only thing that was different was that bag from Wested had lanyard disc colored nickel (I fixed this with black metal spray paint) and had nickel O-rings for strap, while Magnoli bag had correct lanyard disc color and black O-rings. Otherwise they were exactly the same.

Re: Satchel/Bag - the best repo?
Hi,
I ordered from Wested. The belt is from a Polish military bag from the 1970s-80s.
For the bottom I gave a piece of thick cowhide protected with beeswax-based balm.
The canvas is thick and fleshy. It has adequate rigidity.
Sewn with polyester thread - for me a plus because you can melt with a lighter. Here I have to mention a flaw- inside the edges of the canvas are fraying- I need to think about securing with some elastic glue.
The fasteners/snaps are convex-textured- unfortunately IMHO they are a bit different in the photo.
I can also complain about the stamp - in the picture WG - I got ILM, although the website said that they can differ.
To Poland shipping about 25€ plus duty about 18€. Quite expensive with the price of the bag around 45€. But what one does not do for such gadgets.
For fans, I recommend it. I hope my evaluation is subjective and will help someone.

Looks really nice, Walery! Cool idea with the leather stiffener for the bottom.
And yeah, import taxes are always a drag.

Re: Satchel/Bag - the best repo?
Unfortunelly a bag has a sewing defect - the seams in the marker places should be symmetrical - the correct seam on the right side.
Return unfortunately is not an option due to the very high shipping costs plus duty. (The fees were as much as the bag).
I have already written to Wested
In the other hand - Magnolii has got the same - maybe some repros its likę that….

Re: Satchel/Bag - the best repo?
I am guessing that Wested will at most offer to take it back, but as you said... The costs make that not worth it. sorry, man!

They wrote (surprisingly) that there would be some kind of refund to the account.
Fortunately I don't do cosplay so I will survive that something there is not perfect. Overall bag great

Re: Satchel/Bag - the best repo?
That's a great looking bag. Yours looks like the one from Dial of Destiny.
You can spray paint metal lanyard disc darker. This sewing defect you mentioned can easily be fixed. If you do not own sewing machine you can ask your local shoemaker. It will cost you less than sending the bag back or buying new. My bag from Wested also got defect because front seam was not in line with another front seam. But I fixed this myself.

Re: Satchel/Bag - the best repo?
Tomorrow I'm going to a local tailor shop to discuss improving this sewing and protecting the inside edges from fraying .
I'll take the opportunity to use the return for the repair.
I just preferred the Wested to the Magnolia because of the hardware without the black paint - nickel/chrome plating has always been more to my liking, even though there is less conformity to the originality
I'll let you know later what the tailor tells me.

That's completely OK if you prefer nickel hardware.Walery wrote: ↑Wed Jan 01, 2025 10:03 am Tomorrow I'm going to a local tailor shop to discuss improving this sewing and protecting the inside edges from fraying .

Ok, let me know.

Re: Satchel/Bag - the best repo?
The tailor only accepts after January 7 because he has an inventory. The stitching will take care of, but the inner edges will not.
Also, on his advice, I decided to secure the inside edges myself - I sewed them by hand with waxed thread (I sew in leather so I had it on hand). Visually it looks ugly but it won't fray.
Also it is now bombproof

Very good overstitch job, Walery. It's much cooler that you solved the problem yourself!

Very good stitching job. This type of stitching takes patience to do and because you did it, you will love your bag even more.
I did not have patience to do this on any of my bags so I just burned frayed edges with lighter, but it does not look that good and clean as yours.

Re: Satchel/Bag - the best repo?
I'm back!
I received the bag from the seamstress - she corrected the seam on the right side a bit and made the correct seam on the faulty - left side. It's a bit shorter because there wasn't as much material but for me it's fine .
Plus, of course, I wouldn't be myself if I didn't add a small modification - I added a leather flap for a small pocket - my zippo or headphones are sure not to get lost.
I still bought a leather belt made of vegetable-tanned cowhide - I tapered it to 3 centimeters and polished the edges. I specifically chose the belt not from the coracle (cow's spine) but from the side / belly- so it is soft and flowing under its own weight.
For now mounted on bolted / screwed rivets as I ordered an original 40's bag from Soldier from Fortune also maybe it will be the one that will eventually get the leather strap (then I will use nailed brass or copper rivets)
Best regards

Wow, good job. I especially like that idea about flap on small pocket. This is practical.
Re: Satchel/Bag - the best repo?
Hey, I'm back again!
This time I got a 1941 original from Soldier by Frotune - they have fair shipping costs - £13 to Poland.
Of course, I washed the bag by hand and ironed the creases.
(Not perfect everywhere- bottom is difficult to iron). In addition, a leather flap for the pocket, the hem of the inner edges and a flap of thick leather for the bottom.
A little difference - the hardware on the 1941 is real brass so after cleaning it is already slowly covered with a natural patina .
The tarp itself is very similar - maybe even a tad thicker in the reproduction.
The seams in the original are not perfectly straight in places - sewn with cotton thread so you can not melt it with a lighter. I use clear glue for shoes.
The quality sensation is similar. In my opinion, there is no worse or better. They are different and both will stay with me
