Indy Glasses with bluelight lenses?

Post by Western New York Indy »

Hello!

I've been on the lookout for some glasses like the pair Indy wears in the first three films. I don't need prescription glasses, but I do use blue light glasses when using a computer. I've been trying to find Indy style glasses that have the option of being ordered with blue light lenses. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas for where I could get decently accurate or even close enough glasses with blue light lenses.

Thanks :TOH:

I believe these are the ones I have. I had the lenses replaced with my prescription, but they come with standard bluelight lenses.

Edited to add: I swapped the temples out for gold cable temples. They don’t have the tortoise shell on them, but makes them a bit closer.

Order up a pair of Indy Magnoli professors glasses, about 80.00 I think.
Take to your optometrist and have them change out the lens.
It’s what I did with prescription glasses, they had no problems.
And there more screen accurate, no offense to the Amazon pair.

Those look pretty nice- and a great price!! Where did you get the cable temples? I also thought about doing that modification to add a bit more screen accuracy.

Thanks!

I've seen the Magnoli professor glasses. They look awesome!! Unfortunately I just don't have the funds for a pair of glasses that is 89.00 (just checked their site to see the price.) Later down the road I will probably have to get some of those. Right now I'm just looking for a cheap solution since I will only be using them occasionally as blue light blockers... However, my eye doctor did say a few years ago that I might need glasses at some point. So whenever that hits I'll probably snag a pair of the Magnoli glasses!

Are blue light glasses popular in the US? Down here in Australia, our big optical chains generally hold the position that there's no evidence they do anything?

In general, there is no evidence bluelight lenses make a difference. I work with people who swear by them for heavy computer screen use.

I don't know if they're popular or if I just happen to be one of the few who uses them from time to time. I started using them during the lockdown years when I was doing a lot more online than I had been before. You're right that there's not strong evidence that they help much, but I was willing to give it a shot. Since we still don't understand the full extent of how blue light from screens can affect us, I thought there was no harm in wearing them occasionally when I was going to be looking at a computer screen for a long period of time. Whether they work or not, they do give me a good excuse to get Indy glasses even though I don't need prescription lenses (yet) :rolling:

Yeah, I know a few other people who say they really help. I certainly have noticed that I don't get headaches as easily when I use them. But maybe we're all just fooling ourselves into believing that they work :-k Maybe someday blue light lenses will be proven to be totally ineffective, and "don't be exposed to too much blue light" will become like "Don't sit too close to the TV-" One of those health recommendation parents give to their children that receives a hearty roll of the eyes

Yes indeed, I think back to my psych days at uni and looking at research into the placebo effect. The power of the mind is incredible. Absolutely wild.

Even stuff like witchcraft, voodoo, all of that has 'worked' in the past, often due to how much people believe in what's been done to them. Fascinating stuff.

You know, Rob, now that I think about it, there is an incredible piece of evidence I have overlooked! Hear me out-

The reason that Australian optical chains aren't vouching for the effectiveness of blue light blockers is quite simple. Just ask any average American what the greatest Australian invention of all time is, and they will have the same response- the award winning TV show BLUEY!! It would be bad marketing to have a children's show and a dangerous form of light have a similar name. So there is quite obviously a cover up being orchestrated. Yes, you heard me right, the cartoon Blue Heeler loved by millions of preschoolers across the world is secretly controlling the narrative on blue light glasses. This is the only logical conclusion.

(I am 100% kidding, no offense intended to the fine land of Australia or the aforementioned optical chains :[ )

Ha! None taken! I am absolutely the wrong age for Bluey, and have no kids, but I see how much of a roaring success it is around the world. It's quite incredible to see.

Any Bluey derived humour is alright with me! :whip:

Think I got them from an old pair of aviator sunglasses I had laying about.

I went with these, over the Magnoli, because they're less expensive, as well as slightly larger. As someone with a larger face, I've found standard sized glasses/sunglasses don't look or fit quite right.

I had an IT job for a while that had me sitting behind three screens for 8 hours plus whatever time I spent on screens on my personal time throughout the day. About 6 weeks into the job, I started having splitting headaches and decided that I would try blue light blocking glasses to see if it made a difference, despite being skeptical. The day I started wearing them, the headaches went away and never came back. They're good in my book :H:

It really is impressive that it has become such a smashing success.
And it has ties to the Indygear world (kind of) since Morgan Lauff, one of the leaders of the California Jones group, was recently on tour working for the live stage show "Bluey's Big Play."

So I'm gonna use that as an excuse to say that I stayed on topic :rolling:

Ah okay, good to know. I've looked around for replacement cable temples, but most of them are 50 dollars or more. So I will have to see if I can steal some from another pair of cheap sunglasses

A quick Amazon search came up with a few options of replacement cable temples in the $30 range.

I had a similar experience. I rarely get headaches if I wear blue light blockers when I'm on a screen for a while. Even if there's not much evidence as to whether they work or not, it sure seems like they do, so I'm willing to try them
