Herbert Johnson DoD
Thought I’d start a thread as I’ve just gone for the special edition DoD from Herbert Johnson. I’m in London so can go through the bells and whistles they are offering.

Re: Herbert Johnson DoD
Out of curiosity, does anyone know how many hatters HJ has? I assume it's more than just Michelle on staff...
Re: Herbert Johnson DoD
I’m currently on the wait list for their Destiny Poet… since I cannot place the order on their site since my size is just outside of their available range (62cm).
Re: Herbert Johnson DoD
Might as well ad the HJ link to this thread...

So glad to see Lucasfilm circle back to HJ to make the poet for the final Indy film.

Herbert Johnson DoD Check-In Thread!
I am really curious if they'll make their (under) six month goalpost they set for themselves. Seems a little optimistic, but if it works out, I'll be a kid again this Christmas!

Why no sizes larger than 61cm? and why a 6 month wait?

Re: Herbert Johnson DoD
Simple answer is that they're swamped:
https://www.economist.com/business/2023 ... edora-boom
On the bright side (for us), correct me if I'm wrong, but the demand doesn't seem to be anywhere near as high as what ABs saw when KotCS came out. Maybe it's a smaller audience, maybe it's because of the high cost, but whatever it is, I'm just glad that HJ is much more trustworthy than AB ever was.
Re: Herbert Johnson DoD
I think the DoD hat looks wonderful on the HJ site, but I have to say that the hat in the film really did not do it for me. For some reason the brim looked very small on Harrison Ford, which threw off the whole presence of the hat for me. And the crown on screen seemed quite short and had a lot more taper than the one shown on the HJ site.
In terms of the hat I've been a die hard Raiders aficionado from the beginning, so consider me extremely biased. As much as I genuinely enjoyed DoD the other night the hat just didn't do it for me this time! )

This is a friend of mine's HJ Destiny hat. I think it has a wonderful slight REVERSE taper to it. He's the same hat size as me, so I hope mine will look the same when I get it.

A darker hat in Nutmeg with a lighter color Sable ribbon. Almost a “Reverse Indy” Fedora. Check out this new HJ video with Michelle, and a bunch of familiar faces. Fascinating, and worth a watch: https://youtu.be/7T53d3DDmkw

Re: Herbert Johnson DoD
The hat looks so good in those photos! But that’s not what it looked like on screen to me (primarily in the tighter/closer shots — maybe it’s due to the lenses they used…). ;-)

Re: Herbert Johnson DoD
I don't think it was the lenses. The hat in the movie had A LOT of taper in some of the scenes. Also in the train scene it has a huge brim and different bash if you ask me.
Cheers,

Quite possible you are looking at officially licensed products in some scenes.
The tuk tuk repair scene stood out in my mind as particularly bad.

Re: Herbert Johnson DoD
I'd be pretty sure that's not what happened....But I could see the hat shape changing a touch between takes due to different hats being used, and the de-aging scene one may well have been digitally altered as well to "balance" and just not superbly done...I'd put more weight on those as reasons....The hat was clearly a Herbert Johnson all the way through....Just, they used several and some were a touch off...It makes more sense than Disney just throwing in "official licensed" products to boost revenue (It wouldn't)The Aviator wrote: ↑Tue Jul 18, 2023 1:35 am Quite possible you are looking at officially licensed products in some scenes.

Interesting, do you know if the reverse taper was specifically requested by your friend? Every photo (official or not) I've seen of Ford's HJs in DoD looked to me like they were starting to do a normal taper, and not a reverse taperArch Stanton wrote: ↑Mon Jul 17, 2023 4:27 am And reverse taper from the side! Well, Fords were weathered before they made it to camera, so this may just be how they arrived to set.

I suppose, though if so, I wonder what that says about HJ's new methods for preventing shrinkage...

Re: Herbert Johnson DoD
How much darker than Deep Sable is Nutmeg actually?
Re: Herbert Johnson DoD
Nutmeg is way lighter than deep sable.

Re: Herbert Johnson DoD
I always thought the HJ DoD looked really light in the movie and stills.
Easiest way though is to compare the color of the felt in photos of the stock models on HJ's website, since I would assume they use the same (or similar) lighting and angles.

After much comparison and another trip to the cinema to watch Dial of Destiny I placed an order for a Destiny Poet! Now the wait begins

Thanks! The colors of both the felt and ribbon are so different from my others. Here it is with a Screencapped Hero on the left, and a Gary White custom with a very sun bleached ribbon on the right.Tremolo wrote:Congrats! That one looks awesome!

I purchased the standard edition the moment it went live on the Swaine website. Purchased June 20th, and arrived to me in New York just yesterday August 3rd. I was planning on picking up whatever their special edition was going to be, but since I’m not local to London I stuck with the standard. The Aviator wrote:Fantastic hat, congrats!

That’s sounds a like a reasonable waiting time! Thanks a lot for the comparison picture! The hat looks so good and I love that it looks totally Indy but with a unique twist.
It also looks like it has a slight reverse taper, what a great looking hat!

Re: Herbert Johnson DoD
I got mine yesterday as well. I also ordered the standard version from Swaine the day they went live, and was pleasantly surprised to discover I still got the signed certificate of authenticity.
It's a beautiful hat, very well made (really no comparison to the factory HJ I got almost twenty years ago), and fits perfectly. As KhanVader said, it's quite different from previous Indy hats in my experience, both in color and otherwise. The felt is somewhat coarse to the touch and quite stiff, almost like a Western hat. (The front of the brim on mine flipped up in transit and took some massaging to get it to stay down.)
Even more than the nutmeg color, the ribbon is what sets it apart visually, at least to my eye. Here's a color comparison with my Advintage ROTLA in true-sable beaver, with the new HJ on the right:

Nice shot against the backpack, RelicHunter. Awesome hat. In the comparison against the AdVintage the HJ really looks like it has a nice warm brown hue. Lovely!

I was ready to wait 6+ months! I’m just floored by how fast it came from the UK. Totally Indy, but unique is the perfect way to put it. Congrats, guys! Thanks for posting those pics! This is so cool! I’m sure a lot of us would love to know, what are the measurements at the front of the brim and the sides of the brim? How tall is the crown?

Re: Herbert Johnson DoD
Same here! The signature on my certificate looks to be the same as yours, FWIW.
According to my ruler, the brim is 3" in the front and 2.75" on the side. Crown height looks to be about 4.5" at the pinch and 5.25" on the side. (That's for a 61cm hat, which is as big as they come "off the rack.")
Re: Herbert Johnson DoD
Cool! Thanks! I thought the Destiny brim looked bigger. It certainly looked bigger in the 40’s scenes, but even in the 60’s scenes it looked bigger, though not as big as the 40’s scenes. I like it! I wonder if all the Destiny Poets will have this brim size or if yours was enlarged in order to be proportional to the size? Either way, nice hat and congrats again!RelicHunter wrote: ↑Fri Aug 04, 2023 7:43 pmSame here! The signature on my certificate looks to be the same as yours, FWIW.
