Here's a couple of 8 foot whips that I made this week. Both are cowhide with 2 bellies, 2 bolsters and a 12-plait overlay. Each also has a 10" steel rod in the handle with 6" of diamond-pattern plaiting showing on each handle.

I just know that I always like it when other guys post pics of their whips on this forum, so I hope the subscribers out there like these pics as well.

PS: I'm making whips full time right now. I graduated from UWEC with a double major in Math and Physics. Before I get a real job I'm going to give whipmaking a try. And so you guys know, the proceeds from every whip order are going towards my next car. My '91 Lumina has just about had it.

Adam, you do really nice work. I've peeked at your web site before and found it interesting that you experiment with other hides in addition to kangaroo. It's nice to know the ups and downs of cow vs. deer vs. roo.
I'm fiddling with learning to make a whip right now myself using leather scraps (I think it might be upholstery leather, not sure). It's not the easiest to work with because the back side is pretty rough/fuzzy, but hey, it was cheap and will give me something to mess with until I build my skills.
Anyway, I guess my point is that I'm happy to see someone using a range of leathers and describing the differences between them. Very interesting.

As for alternative leathers that I've used, I've also done a little work with bison. It works about the same as a heavier weight shoe leather, depending on the tannage.
