SHAWL COLLAR CARDIGAN : YUP IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR
So I've been doing my annual search for cardigan sweaters.
Came across this one, but I need some input.
https://www.cashmereheartland.com/4-ply ... camel.html
Was Indy cardigan in MOTB a cashmere sweater or some blend, or Marino like Indy Magnoli used to make.
Pros & con are, it's not an exact match, but is close enough (or is it)
Con, a little pricey, but everything else fall way short of the mark.
My ROOTS is 100 lambs wool, but is just a tad big, but still a very good SA.
Typical of the rack sizes, not custom which always made me nervous on getting it wrong.
So, thoughts ?

Re: SHAWL COLLAR CARDIGAN : YUP IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR
Nice one, Croft! Well, I play loosely with screen accuracy for the most part, but to my eye it looks good.
This year I am also interested in getting one. The winters get cold around here (sometimes) and even the horsehide jacket doesn't cope. At least now I know what to expect in terms of price...
I was hoping to find something for around $100-$150...
Cheers,
Bear

Wow, that's a pricy sweater.
I don't think camel is dark enough. I have a Magnoli Wyoming sweater and it is a deep brown.
Doubling for the Griswolds last Christmas.

It’s nice for a close enough, but I think the body length is still to long, measured my ROOT mfg. and it’s close to the same.
Curios on you IM what the length from collar seam to bottom on the back.
Wish IM would bring these back, some many times I almost pulled the trigger, just so nervous on custom.

Re: SHAWL COLLAR CARDIGAN : YUP IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR
My sweater is 22" back length. That's pretty short for a sweater, but when I ordered it I didn't want it to hang out the bottom of my Wested that has windflap/back lengths of 25"/25.5" so I purposely ordered the sweater to be shorter. That is the beauty of ordering custom.

Re: SHAWL COLLAR CARDIGAN : YUP IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR
Just did a quick watch of the bookends on MotB, and sweater doesn’t show below the jacket.
Had a thought and contacted my seamstress and she can shorten my cardigan, so I’m going to try it.
I don’t wear it due to how long it is on my torso. So 8 have nothing to loose and I can save quite a bit.
I’ll post a before and after shot soon, she can take it December 7th.

What do you think of these?
They're all reasonably priced, are they reasonably close to Indy's?

Re: SHAWL COLLAR CARDIGAN : YUP IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR
I think the one from amazon with replacement buttons like these https://www.amazon.com/RECHERE-Football ... 20&sr=8-33 , would be an excellent "close enough" budget pick...
Re: SHAWL COLLAR CARDIGAN : YUP IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR
This one looks like it runs on the shorter side, and could be a good candidate for wearing under a leather jacket without it sticking out the bottom.
https://www.qvc.com/qvc.product.A471116 ... sizeId=541
The Amazon option looks good, but runs long and there'd be no way to shorten it enough without moving the pockets up. I'm not sure how difficult that is, but I'm sure would cost a chunk more when you go to the tailor.
This one could be a good length as-is or would need only minimal shortening. I think all you'd need to do is swap out the buttons.
Thoughts?

Re: SHAWL COLLAR CARDIGAN : YUP IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR
My sweater came last week, and it's perfect. The color and the design seem spot-on, and it doesn't even need to be shortened. I've put it on under my Indy jackets (a Wested and a Steele & Jones) and it doesn't stick out the bottom of either. I might spring for the replacement buttons to make it totally SA, but I haven't decided yet. I definitely recommend this as a quality budget option!
I ordered the 'Wyoming Scarf' from Magnoli Clothiers during the Black Friday sale, so now I can happily say that I have a full winter MotB outfit. I'll share pictures soon, I'll just have to ask my wife to take them, and I haven't told her that my slew of cold-weather purchases are also me feeding my gear-collecting habit. I'm sure she'll be fine with it, I'm just not in a rush to let her in on my little secret.

Please do.
And when you do, could you measure the back of your jacket.
Collar seam to the bottom.
And collar seam to the bottom of the sweater.
I want it for reference as I was also looking at this one.
I’m having one of m8ne adjusted, we’ll see how it comes out.

Re: SHAWL COLLAR CARDIGAN : YUP IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR
Here are some pictures of the sweater under my Wested Raider's jacket. Sadly for me, my Indy jackets aren't really roomie enough for me to layer this sweater underneath, but I'm happy to have the sweater as a cold weather nod to Indy!
Jacket back length: 25.5" (I think this is correct - there is another measurement that's 26.25" but I think that's including the collar stand...)
Sweater back length: 26"
I think that's important to note on the sweater is that that it has a waist-band that hugs slightly and causes the bottom of the sweater to sit higher than the bottom of the jacket. I hope this is helpful!

I think it looks quite good and from here I gotta say the jacket does not look too tight. Seems the sweater fits well underneath it.mr_alex wrote: ↑Sun Dec 18, 2022 9:15 am Here are some pictures of the sweater under my Wested Raider's jacket. Thanks, that’s very helpful.
Reread your post’s above, which one did you end up buying and what size.
Also, where did you find the correct buttons, I know you haven’t bought them yet, but do you have a link.
Mine should be done this week from the seamstress.
So I’ll wait to it’s done to see if it’s good enough or go with the one you bought as it does look great.
Nice MotB vibe.

Re: SHAWL COLLAR CARDIGAN : YUP IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR
I bought this one: https://www.amazon.com/VOBOOM-Knitwear- ... 09LR49KSG/
And the buttons I was referring to were these ones that Hollowpond recommended: https://www.amazon.com/RECHERE-Football ... 20&sr=8-33
As for sizing, I ordered a size M, which is my regular size. Some of the reviews encourage you to order a size up from what you do normally - which I initially did - but the sweater was much too baggy and didn't layer well. I returned the Large and got a Medium and it fits great! I did also notice a difference in the make of the two (not sure if it had to do with the size or just the luck of the draw) but the L had unfinished buttonholes (just a hole cut in the fabric) while the M had properly finished buttonholes. I saw the unfinished buttonholes comment come up in another review, so I can testify that it does happen, but it doesn't always happen. PLUS! If you have a seamstress, that's a easy fix for a pro I imagine.
My question regarding replacing the buttons is that the current buttons are large and flat. The 'accurate' buttons look much thicker. So, in order to fit through the existing buttonholes, should I order a size smaller? (Less diameter, but more thickness, equals fits the same buttonhole?)
I am still considering replacing the buttons, but I'm not sure what size to get so I'm stuck. Anyone have any guidance?
Can't wait to see your sweater when it's ready, Croft!

Re: SHAWL COLLAR CARDIGAN : YUP IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR
I do like the Voboom in details but from the photos it looks alittle too pumkin like in color. A little too orangy perhaps? I dont know, its hard to tell. At least from the rewiev photos I have seen online, it seems alittle too pumkin like. The famous Indy Motb shot where he sits in his chair is not the original color. Its shot under artificial light making it look more orange. The real color is a more of a mid brown with a slight mustard vibe.
Lovely sweather though, love the details and cut. looks spot on
Brw, Im doing a builders thread (Like I have done in the past) where I will source down all items to match the screen as close as possible. Will be fun.

For example. I see this color. A more muted down brown shade. At least this is what I see when I compare the one Ford wears caught in daylight.
We all love the rusty red brown one but its not true to what the real color is. Its artiifical colored. If anything, it should be more mustard ish than red orange.

I agree with Holt on this, I suspect that the cardigan is a deeper brown than we see in the pics from the show..
A great idea was to use the Tokyo Laundry cardigan, since the shawl is large enough...I think it's a very good layering companion with the jacket and a lighter coloured scarf..I did a search for the one I own, but it appears they no longer carry the colour online?

Heck yeah buddy! Lovely sweather!
Im slowly building my Motb now. I have not down one since 2016!!
Edit. The picture to the right show more or less the original colors IMO. Outside and looks to be ungraded.

Re: SHAWL COLLAR CARDIGAN : YUP IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR
Thanks brother!
Yeah, the MOTB look is honestly the one I use the most here, because Tokyo seems to have lost Autumn entirely, and just goes from 30 degrees to 0-5 over the course of a couple of weeks... Baffling....
Let me know which sweater you go for! I'd be interested! Tom Ford did a lovely line of cardigans with huge roll neck shawl collars, but they didn't sell them in brown, so I didn't go for one...But I'm still looking...
Merry Christmas to you and the family too eh? Have a wonderful 2023 as well!
Re: SHAWL COLLAR CARDIGAN : YUP IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR
Cheers buddy! Absolutley, I have 2 sweathers on the way and 4 scarfs. I need to mix and match to see what looks the closest. Happy Xmas to you and yours!
Re: SHAWL COLLAR CARDIGAN : YUP IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR
Hmmm.... that's interesting! Unless I'm just missing it in the photo, the scarf appears much darker than the camel tone of the Magnoli Wyoming Scarf I just picked up... As we sort of true colors, I'll be curious what folks end up concluding the true tone of that might be.
Based on the current conversation, what do people think of the
Easton Cardigan https://genterie.com/products/easton-cardigan-woodland
or the
Liverpool Cardigan https://www.qvc.com/Liverpool-Los-Angel ... 541&TZ=EST
The Easton Cardigan seems like it would layer well and has a particularly wide shawl collar.
The Liverpool Cardigan doesn't have a huge collar, but seems to me like the color and build may be close compared to the Magnoli cardigan photo fifthchamber posted?
Still open to other budget options. I guess I can always sit back and see what you come up with, Holt!

So blurry, how can you spec colors.

I'll look forward to hearing your thoughts and knowing more about the custom work you end up doing to it. I may very well follow suit!
I assume one of the modifications will be to switch out the buttons. Do you have any thoughts on the question below?
Also, heads up that when I ordered a L it came with unfinished buttonholes, so adding some stitching there to reinforce the fabric may need to be on your mod list. When I switched out for a M, the buttonholes were finished so who knows.
