My Herbert Johnson with some Camels in Africa last week.
Re: The Herbert Johnson Hall of Fame - A Display Thread
Hello All,
Went for a hike again, with Mi Lady, in Nottingham, NH, last Saturday, and got a decent photo of me in my new Rabbit, Dark Sable HJ Poet. (Also, along with, my Wested (glowing?!) Raiders shirt.
Hope you enjoy and may be more to come... (This Flickr!)
Sincerely, Michael B.

Re: The Herbert Johnson Hall of Fame - A Display Thread
Here's my brand new Beaver Raiders HJ in Sable. I know it's not the greatest picture, but it's all I've got right now.
I also acquired this previously owned HJ through Facebook recently. When I first received it, it was filthy and a bit misshapen (it looked something like the ToD cockpit hat). I removed the liner and cleaned it up as best I could. It's still stained, but it doesn't feel grungy anymore. The sweatband is better than it was, but it's still a bit grimy. I reblocked the felt, too. I was hoping to get it Raiders worthy, but I couldn't get another 1/2 inch out of the felt, so the best I could manage was more LCesque. I wish Id taken some before photos, but I was in such a rush to get started on the reblock, I didn't think of it until it was too late.
The best part of getting a used hat is that when your wife sees you wearing it and asks "Is that new?" you can answer "No" in good conscience.

Re: The Herbert Johnson Hall of Fame - A Display Thread
A gray vintage HJ Poet I got off eBay (and had been meaning to post pics of for a few years - #### my ADHD
From the 38 New Bond St. address, according to the HJ dates/locations thread, this could be from 1971 or earlier, beyond that I have no idea when it was made.
Anyways, I do need to re-sew in the lining, as it has fallen out (or rather, perhaps more correctly(?) the thread holding it in place has come undone(?)) and the ribbon looks as if it could use a little cleaning.
(And don't worry, once I took the pics I intended to take, the hat went right back to being upside-down/on its crown - not gonna leave it on its brim like that)

Re: The Herbert Johnson Hall of Fame - A Display Thread
Morning all,
I started reading this forum to get a view as to the Herbert Johnson Poet hats - the release of ‘The Dial of Destiny’ rekindled my love of Indiana Jones. I’d been interested in a hat for quite some time and done an ungodly amount of internet surfing to fuel that interest (something it sounds like many of you will be able to relate to!). After surfing daily from seeing the trailer for the movie drop until the other day, I finally decided to get one. My first choice would be a hat in beaver felt, however I understand HJ aren’t offering these at the moment. So, wanting the genuine article I ordered a Deep Sable Rabbit Raiders Poet last week. HJ are quoting six months to delivery but told me it wasn’t likely to actually take that long. So, let’s see how long it does take. Expecting six months I’d be happy with anything less.
In the meantime, to scratch my *ahem* beaver itch, I’ve been in touch with Thomas at AdVintage to see about getting in his order list when he opens his books again.
I’ll let you know how long it took and show you the goods when they arrive.
Thanks to the forum for feeding my irrational longing for information and opinion on this!

I just got word from S&J about my jacket is ready for shipping.
I waited around 3 months +/-
Couple weeks, you’d be very lucky.

Re: The Herbert Johnson Hall of Fame - A Display Thread
I’ve been on the HJ waitlist for almost 2 months now.
I’ve heard some people say that the felt on the DOD hats were thicker and coarser than expected… does anyone know if that’s just the DOD hats? Or is it all HJ hats? Having owned a bunch of Adventurebilts and Penman hats I’m used to the flexible and smooth felt.

They used extra stiffener on the DoD hats for the film, so the ones made for the public are the same as those...The felt in general from HJ though is rather thin and very flexible I've found, although I've only had the rabbit in hand....Lovely flexible stuff...I'd be fairly sure the DoD one is the same, just with extra stiffener to match the movie.
Re: The Herbert Johnson Hall of Fame - A Display Thread
Looks fantastic.......love it.....btw....do not want to scroll back 20 years in info.....but did Tom Baker as Doctor Who wear a uncut Hebert Johnson fedora in his first few episodes?.....just curious....watched him yesterday....looked like a Raiders hat not trimmed down..... ...oh!...and I was using tobacco products while I wrote this......lol....sorry....could not miss the chance to make fun of new Indy movie that posted that.....nudity and bad language okay.....lmao
Re: The Herbert Johnson Hall of Fame - A Display Thread
I ordered on launch day! Received it on October 18th.

That's a great looking hat mate! Lovely stuff!
Destiny? I'm falling rather deeper in love with the look each time I watch the film....

Thanks, bud! Yes, Destiny! It's like the one clothing piece from the movie where we can get it made by the hands that made the movie version... I didn't even study the differences too closely, it's only after receiving it, that I realize the color choices are unique to the DoD fedora.

Ok….. so I like to go all in….. not long after I ordered the Herbert Johnson Fedora, I ordered an AdVintage also. To be honest, I wanted a beaver felt hat so now, I’m getting both… hopefully I see one this side of Christmas.

Evening forum…. So I ordered my Raiders Herbert Johnson Fedora on 22AUG23 and got an email today to tell me that it’s ready for me to collect at the store. Took three months… given my expectations were set at six, I’d say that’s good going.
I’ll let you know when I get it….

Re: The Herbert Johnson Hall of Fame - A Display Thread
My HJ arrived last week following just under a two month wait since ordering. I was really pleased to receive the hat and it’s incredibly well-crafted. The rabbit fur felt is supple and the ‘deep sable’ colour is very rich. The sewn lining and the buttery smooth leather sweatband are particular highlights.
A couple of things I noticed, though… Upon arrival, the front pinch was quite low on the hat, leading to some strange proportions. I re-bashed it and raised the front pinch a bit to look a bit more screen accurate. I think the open crown height of the HJ is slightly lower than 5.5 inches, which is not a deal breaker, but there’s a subtle difference in the height of the HJ compared to, say, the AdVintage Harrison.
Here’s a YouTube video comparing the HJ, AdVintage and an old Fed IV:

Re: The Herbert Johnson Hall of Fame - A Display Thread
@The Aviator
Thanks for that! Yes, I'm very pleased to have it.
One of the reasons I re-bashed the pinch was because it was proportionally off. From what I've read, the front pinch peaks at about 4.5 inches, or the equivalent of three widths of the ribbon (which is 1.5 inches). The pinch on the HJ when I received it was closer to 4 inches, and therefore made the crown seem a bit short on my head. I've mocked up this admittedly crude image to illustrate what I mean.
It looks like I need to drop the back of the crown a bit as well, though nothing's ever going to be a perfect match (unless you're Thomas at AdVintage! )

Re: The Herbert Johnson Hall of Fame - A Display Thread
Congrats on the new HJ and the short waiting time!
What size is your Poet? I think only the size 59 hats have a 5.5" open crown height and all others are slightly less/more in order to keep the overall proportions.

Re: The Herbert Johnson Hall of Fame - A Display Thread
@Tremolo
Thanks! That’s very interesting about the crown height differences based on the size of the hat. I’m a 58. I’ve measured the crown height a handful of times and my best guess is that it’s somewhere between 5.25 and 5.5 inches. If it’s closer to the former, your explanation might be the reason. That would be slightly disappointing if so, because the brim width is then out of proportion to the crown height in that case. The 58 AdVintage Harrison I picked up recently definitely has a 5.5-inch crown height, and it feels a bit more dimensionally correct as a result. Anyway, I’m generally very happy with the HJ. Since my most recent message, I’ve also dropped the back of the crown a bit to be a bit more accurate as well.

Re: The Herbert Johnson Hall of Fame - A Display Thread
Herbert Johnson have made a fairly good attempt to keep the sizing and proportions of the hat balanced for different sizes and this includes the height of the bash and the width of the brim too, which reduces with less height...It works fairly well from what I've seen, for people who are less or more than the 59 "standard", so I wouldn't worry too much unless the hat looks wildly "off" on your actual head when being worn...

Hmmmm, this gives me something to think about , been on a fence for the DoD myself.
But, I've seen two site's HJ that offer it, one Swaine.london for 495.00 (not US$) and one Herbert Johnson (herbertjohnson.co.uk) for 412.50 (not US$)
So what size are you as I know that to can make a differnc as certain sizes are more populr and can push out the ETA.
And whose site did you buy from.
Can't wait to see a picture or a dozen.

Swaine are the parent company of Herbert Johnson now, they bought the company a while back and have a location in London in the Burlington Arcade for the hats, so they should be selling at the same price as Herbert Johnson, they're the exact same company.....And once ordered, the hat will be made through the same lines by the same team at HJ, so just order the cheaper one I'd think....(I'm sure that's a mistake..)

True.
Price isn’t the issue, more like the lead time.
If I can it in a short time frame, I’m seriously thinking of getting one.

Wow! That hat looks great!! I'm continually impressed by the hats coming from HJ. I visited their store in London a few months back and saw the Destiny Poet for the first time in person, it truly is a gorgeous hat. Do you ever post on the California Jones Facebook page? I’ll throw my hat in the ring, pardon the pun “welcome to the club” and I too am jealous.
I’ve wanted a DoD ever since getting my jacket.
It really does suit you.
May I inquire what your time frame was from date of order to when you received it, and what size is yours.
Oh and more pictures to.

Re: The Herbert Johnson Hall of Fame - A Display Thread
Thank you, Indiana Croft! I appreciate it. And I definitely recommend going for a Destiny Poet! I believe I've seen photos of you DoD jacket and it is stunning.
In terms of time frame, I ordered this hat on 6/21/2023 and received it on 9/18/2023. So it was almost exactly three months to the day, which to me seemed great! I know their time frame can vary depending on how busy they are with orders, but I've ordered several Herbert Johnson fedoras over the past couple of years and their customer service and wait times have been absolutely top-notch excellent in my experience.
I ordered a size 60cm, after emailing back and forth a bit with the HJ team about what size I should go for and sending them photos of my measurements. They recommended 60cm for me, and it fits perfectly!
And I'm happy to share more pictures! Here's a shot of the liner, as well as an outdoor shot.
