Penitent Man Leather Bag Strap Review

Post by Stefan Hills »

Very rarely does a hand crafted product move me to take the time to share my thoughts about it. However, every now and then, a few exceptional discoveries come along that warrants such reflection. One such item I purchased recently is none other than the Indiana Jones satchel bag strap made by fellow gear head, Kyle Nibling and his company Penitent Man Leather and boy was I “humbled’ by what I received (yes that’s a Last Crusade Pun.”

I have been on the search for a screen accurate Raiders bag strap (even though the Last Crusade is my favorite movie) simply because I love how the color of the weathered tan compliments the British Gas Mask bag so perfectly. While I decided on the color of the hide, I preferred the functionality of the roller buckle which was not screen accurate to the Raider’s bag strap. Fortunately, with the images that are surfacing on the internet that reveal the first glimpse’s of Indy’s gear in Indy 5, I was thrilled to see a roller buckle on a tan strap which is a combination I had always wanted and now will be part of canon. In my quest for accurate gear, it has always been fair game to me to have a combination of mix and match gear from the franchise, just so long as it is accurate to what is seen on screen regardless of the movie in the franchise.

THE STRAP:
One of the characteristics that I find so appealing about Indy’s gear is the character ingrained in to it, that hand made feel and quality. Steele & Jones are specialists at this and the same is true Penitent Man Leather.

Image

I informed Kyle that I wanted an Indy 5 bag strap, and he went over a few details to ensure I received the most screen accurate looking strap that could be made. Apart from the color and groves, Kyle informed the roller buckle having a slight curve making it not totally flat, a detail that I had not heard other vendors of gear mention before. Also, another detail that Kyle pointed out was the Indy 5 strap was secured to the bag’s hardware with the aid of a riffle stud and not the traditionally used Chicago screw as seen on other reproductions.

Image

The more I looked at the images Kyle provided me, I liked the idea of riffle strap stud was used since the original sling were fused riffle straps as Kyle pointed out. It’s those little details, that were largely ignored that drew to me what Penitent Man Leather was offering and it really has made the difference. The strap follows the dimensions of being an inch thick in width, with a thickness of 2.7mm and sized to your height and those who worry about the effects of a newly hand made strap and Indy shirts, fear not as there is no bleeding of dye here.

Image

If the current global pandemic has taught humanity anything is that we must all do our part to lookout for each other, and one of the many ways to we can help is by supporting small business get on their feet in these uncertain times. At the same time from a gear perspective, upon receiving this strap I am reminded by the words of Robert Frost, and about “two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.”

So if looking for a custom piece of gear for where your next adventure may take you, why not buy local and support a fellow COW member for the last 13 years and give his company, Penitent Man Leather a consideration in the quest for screen accuracy from our beloved franchise.

I too just put in a order, for what is called the Legacy strap.
I PM’d him and while I couldn’t use the preferred payment (for me) PayPal, he doesn’t take it.
I’m going all Michealson on this one and mailing a MO :CR:

He’ll be sending some pictures.

I thought the Raiders strap was confirmed not to have the grooves, or am I wrong.
But that is a nice looking strap, can’t wait to get mine.

Correct Raiders had no grooves, what’s pictured is an Indy 5 strap.

You are right Croft, the Raider’s strap does not have grooves. Noel Howard straps had them and I believe this is where the pattern came to be adopted by subsequent manufacturers.

There is a section where the strap is stitched on both sides that makes it seem like there is a groove but it is only a small section and does not continue the length of the strap on the Raider’s bag strap.

This is what I mean,

You are gonna love your bag strap! It’s something different from Kyle.

I’ll be curious to know how the stud holds up to daily wear and tear.

It looks like it’s a slit in the top part which is inserted over the stud, correct?

Anyone hear from knibs7?
I have a PM and an order out there with him, but he hasn't checked it as it's still there.
And no I don't face book.
Just want to be sure he got the MO I sent for the strap.

Croft

EDIT: he’s seen the PM, now awaiting a status check.
I can’t wait to see the strap on the W&G MKVII bag.
That and the weather to show, I’m sure I’ll brave the cold to do so.
Come on summer. [-o<

Seeing as I don’t do FB, i need some one to reach out to Knibs7.
I had to send back my strap as it was to short causing the buckle to be below the buttons.

I know he received it, and I’ve PM’d him couple time as to a status check.
He gets the PM, but doesn’t respond.

Just want my strap thats all.
Trying to be patient, but when he dosn’t respond, I just get concerned/confused/
Hope he’s ok.

Forgive me if I missed this if it was already discussed…but the P.M. bag strap for the Indy V version… what I see in the pictures from the set of the V strap buckle is an ‘elongated’ rectangle strap- not a ‘square’.

To me it looks like the backpack flap buckle was also used for the bag strap. :-k

Hmmm, I’ll need to see some more angles as the strap buckle looks flatter, but I definitely see a resemblance. Good eye Koko! ;)

I have one of the Frost River backpacks and the buckle is too narrow for a traditional Indy strap and the pictures I've seen appears the strap is roughly 1" as has been in the past. The backpack strap is 3/4" wide.

That being said, I agree the strap buckle looks more rectangular than the other movies have been.

It's a strange optical effect you get with flat (i.e. pressed) full roller buckles. These are slightly taller than wide because of the roller on top. From the front they look square but at an angle they look much more rectangular. You don't get quite the same effect with cast roller buckles as they have a rounded rather than flat surface.

Bottom left in this picture is a flat full roller buckle (minus the prong) compared to a square cast and a rectangular cast buckle. At an angle the bottom flat looks more like the rectangular cast at the top. Head on it looks same proportion as the square cast.
