The Original Gusset

Post by junior »

Okay, about this gusset used on the Raiders jacket. I know that _ inspected a stunt jacket for the film and implemented what he saw into the Expedition design. This particular gusset was labeled as the "Mick Jagger Lips".

Anyhow...I finally got a real good picture of the Starlog Indy shot, you know, the one with him swingin' the bullwhip, and could make out the gusset very clear. I was shocked to see that the gusset was large, one piece and like the big gussets that Wested puts on their jackets at present time.

Has anyone else noticed this? Give me your thoughts. I am a little confused. Maybe the gusset design varied from jacket to jacket.

IndyBlues, I'm sending you an email with an attachment file of the pic. If you can post it, go ahead - I am all thumbs when it comes to that stuff.

BTW - I made a typo above. It isn't a one piece design. It has two pieces, it's just that each section is alot wider and longer than I had previously thought. Again, I do not doubt what _ saw, I just think that maybe two types of gussets may have been used while cranking these puppies out. Anyhow, here it comes.

Peter said a while ago: 'I can confirm that the gussets in the Indy films were all of two piece contruction, I can alsso confirm that some of the jackets had gussets and some did not which is why it confuses and causes controversy.'

I do know that the two-piece gussets on my new goatskin jacket ( :D )are much more effective than the one-piece gussets on my old cowhide jacket.

The two-piece gussets really do seem to help with greater flexibility of movement, so I imagine that the 'stunt' jackets would have been two-piece for this very reason?

Is there a picture to post for us to view? I'm sure I'm not the only one interested in seeing this one.

Just reading through some posts here and I came across this one. I became interested in the "original gusett," so I popped my DVD "Raiders" in to see if I could get a good look....

The 2 scenes that I was able to get a decent look at the gusetts were, perhaps, the fight scene toward the end with the big German mechanic, and when Indy is hanging onto the front of the truck.

If you do the freeze-frame, second-by-second, by keep hitting "pause" when Indy punches the German with a come-back with a few good blows before the propeller gets him, you can get a few good shots of the under-arm gusett. In BOTH this scene and when Indy is hanging on the front of the truck, use the freeze-frame, second by second, and look for the gusetts.

To me, they look as if they are only "one-piece" gusetts. I wish I knew how to post pics on here, but perhaps someone can take a look at them and post them here....

Kind Regards,

If there truly are 1-piece gussets on show, either Peter's recollection is not clear or they must have been added later by the wardrobe dept. He clearly states all the gussets he made were 2-piece.

Regardless of what might or might not be seen on screen, in my experience the 2-piece gussets (taken through to the jacket lining) are far superior to the 1-piece. Those things really work, for me anyway! :)

Cheers,

Hey there!

On your 2-piece Gusetts....do they help by adding extra room in your armpit/shoulder areas (less tight feel when 'hugging yourself'....)? Just curious
