Del Carpio or Paul Nolan?
I’m continuing to pine away for a screen accurate, high-quality 10-foot Raiders bullwhip. This is something that’s been on my bucket list for well over a decade.
I always thought I’d go with a Del Carpio when the time came to pull the trigger on a whip, but after seeing and hearing about Paul Nolan’s 1936 whip, I’m wrestling with the choice.
Anyone out there have experience with both? Any recommendations one way or the other? I’d welcome all commentary on the subject.

Re: Del Carpio or Paul Nolan?
I would go with Del Carpio, he eats, lives, and Breathes Indy whips. Nothing against Paul, he makes great stuff, but if you want 100% accurate, Del Carpio is the man for the job. I think his wait time is also better, but I could be wrong.

Re: Del Carpio or Paul Nolan?
That was my problem few months ago as well. I went with Paul Nolan's 1936 10 ft bullwhip. I cracked Del Carpio's whips before, so I knew them a bit.
What really sold me, was the look of the 1936 whip together with the true design of late 70's and early 80's that Morgan developed.
Shorter waiting time, cheaper price also helped in choosing.

Re: Del Carpio or Paul Nolan?
I second that. I don't own a Paul Nolan so can't say anything about his whips, but I own a Del Carpio and a DM and I love my Del Carpio. He's the go to for screen accuracy. He knows every single detail of how the DMs were made and will tell you all about it if you ask him...
Also depending on what you're after, his KOTCS Jacka replica is outstanding, probably the closest thing to a Jacka you'll find. His wait times are not short though but definitely worth it...

Re: Del Carpio or Paul Nolan?
I do realize what your asking for: a comparison. I asked for something similar a few months back and it seems it is hard to find someone with both. I have 2 Nolan's and they are fantastic and a joy to crack. I'm sure Del Carpio is also. Not sure how you can judge one vs the other in matters you have questions about without holding both at some point. I can't help you there, but my experience with Midwest whips was positive, he's reasonable and can do custom stuff. Great experiences both times. Hope you find your great whip.

Daniel Borton, our own moderator, posted a photo of such comparison on his FB few weeks ago as he owns both whips.
One more thing regarding Del Carpio whips. When I talked to him before I decided and placed and order at Midwestwhips, he said that due to COVID-19 the international shipping rates increased in Peru and shipping to Poland would cost 120 usd. That's crazy expensive.

If you don't have FB you are missing so much. There are many fantastic Indy related groups

Is the handle on the bottom Del Carpio?

Re: Del Carpio or Paul Nolan?
Yes, as I wrote in my earlier post. Nolan's whip is thinner and a bit lighter, but no lightweight by any means. My 10 footer weighs 800 grams.

Anytime
So to conclude - either way you will choose wisely. If the money isn't the issue of course

Re: Del Carpio or Paul Nolan?
Interesting conversation!
Comparing my DM and my Del Carpio they're really almost exactly the same thickness and dimensions (other than the handle on my DM is less screen accurate). So I'm wondering, does Paul Nolan make thinner whips on purpose, or does it feel lighter and thinner but that's just the way it handles?

Re: Del Carpio or Paul Nolan?
It is how Morgan made his whips in the 70's and early 80's. If you google how they looked compared to Morgan whips from 90's or 00's, you will see that they were indeed thinner and had higher placed ringknots. Just like Raiders bullwhips.Loneken wrote:Interesting conversation!

So yes, Paul makes them thinner on purpose. But it doesn't feel much lighter than Del Carpio whips. My 1936 whip weighs 800 grams so it's quite heavy, but it's very well balanced.
Re: Del Carpio or Paul Nolan?
I have heard that multiple times but if you look at the TOD DM whip that was sold on propstore a few years back it looks thicker than say a Paul Nolan or other DM replicas out there. In fact it looks very close to my DM which I think was made in the late 90's.. So not sure how to reconcile that?tomek9210 wrote:It is how Morgan made his whips in the 70's and early 80's. Re: Del Carpio or Paul Nolan?
There were multiple whips supplied to the film and they varied in style a bit. As you can see here, in the Vic's shot, the whip used for those scenes look like it has a long, thin handle:
Re: Del Carpio or Paul Nolan?
Yep that's a good shot thanks!
Now that I know that Nolan makes his whip on the thinner side, makes me wonder if the Indy 5 whip as we've seen on the recent pics is a Nolan as it does seem very thin.. anyway this is off topic
I'm happy with my Del Carpio and sounds like owners of Nolans are happy too, so can't go wrong either way.

The wife & I have another baby on the way in the coming weeks, so I’m afraid my dream of a screen-accurate Raiders whip will have to remain a dream for now, as it has for many years.
But I’m loving the discussion!
Re: Del Carpio or Paul Nolan?
Congratulations on your new addition! Much more important than a Raiders whip... Although they're not mutually exclusive I got my first whip when my daughter was 1 yr old she's now 2 years old and I own 3 whips so it's only a matter of patience!TimInKC wrote:Haha, no not at all.
