LOOKING INTO A NEW WHIP

Been in talks with the “Whip Man” out of New Zealand.
Raiders 10’
Kangaroo hide.

Now I’m thinking in natural, but the time frame for getting a nice brown tone may take some time.

What suggestions for another color, I have one in whiskey, but its dark, what other tones would be a nice look.

If you’re going for Raiders I would just do natural, and maybe have the transition knot dyed slightly darker. Natural looks too pale in photos for my liking, it looks a lot better in person.

My personal preference is always natural. If you take it out a few times and crack it in the sun, or just hang it on your belt for a hike it will start getting a nice colour in 1-2 years.

A dark brown would also work. The whip does seem almost black at some points during the movies.

Hmm having the transistor knot dyed darker you say, is this how it’s done on Indys, gonna have to go the the screen shot site and check it out.

The translation knot is definitely darker when he hooks it to the truck before he gets dragged.

Whipwarrior had a whip with the transition knot darker than the rest of the whip... I have to say, it looked amazing!

There was also an O2U2 sequence at the beginning of the thong, which made it quite cool.

It makes sense for both knots on the handle to be darker, I suppose. When you crack the whip you hold it by the butt...and if you carry it you hold it around the transition. At least I do...

Ok I need a little help.
I’ve been conversing with whip guy about the transition knot being a different color.

Whip will be natural.
Fall, well he only offers dark brown or a dark red.

But I looked through screen grabs and looked around COW, but who has a pic I can send him of the color transition knot.

Getting close to pulling the trigger, specially scene he does takes PayPal. $\:D/$

Why do you order an Indy whip from a maker who does not make them screen accurate?

Well mostly because the price is right, around $400. Plus SH.
Don’t get me wrong I have some money (not including the stimulus).
I just don’t wat to deplete my account.

I’ve asked him if he’s ever done a Indy whip, we’ll see what he say.
Oh and he understands what were talking about the different color on the transition knot.
That and its a real whip.

A screen accurate real whip, is very expensive.
Magnolia has a nice deluxe, but it’s not accurate leather. I think it’s cow.

I know, but with whips it is the same situation as with other items of Indy gear. You have close enoughs and you have real screen accurate treasures. I've learned my lesson that once you buy close enough you start to discover all wrong details. It is really better to save some $$$ and buy items from most renomed vendors.

I have nothing against Peter Jack's whips, I have seen his work and it is top notch. I just don't believe his Indy whips are screen accurate and may be comparable with Morgan, Del Carpio or Nolan bullwhips.

tomek9210, what you say is true.
But to drop that sort of funds is outside of my budget.

Close enough that cost (like IM) $260.00 to me while the price is right for some, I don't think the whip will stand the test of time at that price point.
But a whip at the $400. while close enough, correct leather, plaiting and understands where I'm coming from is fine in my book.
Is it a whip like De Carpio, Stonehouse or Nolan. No probably not. But it's a true whip as far as I'm concerned and only one of us nuts

would know the difference.
I haven't seen anyone here that seems to have purchased one lately, so we'll have to wait and see.

When I get, I will post a review with plenty of pictures, you know me.

I know what you mean, Croft, and I'm totally with you.

For me the whip is the most important piece of Indy gear and I am still satisfied with having a close enough, functional whip. I mostly want the whips details to be esthetically pleasing in my eyes, not necessarily fully screen accurate.

Collecting Indy stuff is expensive enough and I think I am not alone in the situation that this is not my only hobby, so the budget needs to go around for the others as well...

just for reference ... that under the truck placing the whip handle sequence was shot post principle filming back in California ... there's no guarantee they used the correct whip! ..

Well I’ve order my whip.
He typically doesn’t use white falls, but I think it mentioned he’s going to source them out for me (and maybe future customers)

His final response, or one of them was he’s handled many a DM and Stones for repair work and has been making whips for the past 44 years.
Was he’s making a Indiana Jones whip.
Kangaroo hide, with 12 plaits.

I will of course post pictures when I give it and my limited thoughts on it.

Trying to choose a whip has my head spinning. I don't want something cheap that is of poor quality, but I'm also not looking for something that breaks the bank. I'd like a good whip that will go well with the gear and can withstand the occasional cracking. For me, it's just that one piece of gear that it seems, no matter how much I research, I can't make any progress.

If you don’t plan on getting too much into whip cracking, then Magnoli should be at the top of your list. I’ve heard they’re comparable to Todd’s Costumes whip, which was my first and it’s really nice for light cracking.

I'm stoked, even resourced a white fall for me, hopefully he makes that a standard as the dark fall is not SA.

Funny thing he went through all the trouble of getting my contact info for I thought DHL to call for permission to leave it, but it came by USPS and they do not call.

Yes it was a bummer, but the Misses to the rescue, she went and picked up today.

Well first impression was wow, beautiful. Some how my mind was imaging some HUGE whip, but it looked very similar to my Strain.

The color was perfect, not a bright tan, but muted.
And the different color on the transition knot was a drastic difference, but enough so that as it ages, will darken.
Came with couple of crackers and small tub of I'm assuming a wax.
Question, how soon is to soon to treat it with the wax.

Or Pecard's.

And of course I was going to hold off and try it tomorrow, but I could help myself, right out a tried it out.
Now I'm not an expert by any stretch, but it cracked, not every time, but I was able to do my two basic's.
The Cattle man and the (don't know the name) where you drop it behind you, bring it and over the shoulder
then straight out and CRAAAAAACK.

So these are just some quick shots, I'll do some next to the Strain and outside light

Thanks for sharing your pics. It's exciting to get a new toy!

About conditioning the whip, I'm sure there's experts here that know exactly what to do. I have heard, through forums and in my own communication about my personal whips, that when you get a new whip it's already loaded with plaiting soap. I've been told not to over-condition it. I suppose every whip is different, such as leather and usage, but it might not need to be Pecarded as much as you think. Except for the fall, which needs regular attention because it sees a lot of abuse and dries out faster.

It looks like a nice bullwhip, but not like an Indy bullwhip. The buttknot is wrong. The strands width is too narrow. The handle seems like 10 inches long.

Is it me or does the handle get thicker towards the butt? I'm used to reverse taper on a hat, but not on a whip. I'm wondering what would create that effect. Normally a whip might thicken towards the transition due to how the the bolsters are placed. Not sure why it would thicken towards the butt.

Well first thing the handle isn't 10", and ya the butt knot could have been a little larger.
But this isn't a Strain, DeCaprio or one of the other whip makers, that while make a more SA, this was never purchased with that in mind.
1) I wanted a 10' whip that wasn't going to set be back BIG bucks.
2) I didn't want to wait a year for it, this took about 4-5 weeks.
3) It's not made with cow, this bonafide kangaroo, and was made in New Zealand, back yard to Australia.
4) He even did the transition knot darker, his other Indy whips don't have that.

So compare all you like, I'm very pleased with my purchase, he sent me some advice on cracking a 10', not to over power and let it do the work.
Went out after mowing the lawn, and cracked it, with not over powering my technique and it cracked beautifully.

So here's two more shots.
8' Joe Strain on top.

I highly recommend him, all my emails and questions were answered quickly and timely.

Look at the last centimeter before ring knot. There are plaiting mistakes.

Oh, wow, Croft! The whip looks amazing: the thong taper is nice and smooth, it's clear that the maker knew what he was doing.

In my eyes it is definitely and Indy whip and it will serve you well.

I know that 400 USD is a lot of money and whips may cost even more, but I wouldn't be happy if a whip had plaiting mistakes. You pay your hard earned money and you get a whip that looks just bad. I know Peter Jack whips, I had them in hand, I love his latigo and daga whip and I know that he is capable of making superb whips. But seeing your photos makes me wonder what happened.
