That looks like one of those waterproof canvas or leather hats you can find at Cabela's...

I remember them well. Sold though stores like JCPenneys back in the 80’s. It’s real, but not at THAT price point. :-k

Most (if not all) were made by Stetson, and were made around the TofD time period. You could get one with the IJ pin on the side, or one that didn't have any LFL markings at all......just Stetson.

I had a standard Stetson version, and though well made and VERY heavy canvas, they weren't sized very well, and were very hot......not much better than a fur felt in summer, so there wasn't much gained in switching between it and a standard hat in warm weather.

You can still purchase a similar version at WDW these days, but not by Stetson or marked 'Indy'.

It has a certain charm to it. More like "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" than Indy, though.... :|

I was just at Disneyland in Saturday and those leather hats are the ones they're selling in Adventureland now. Haven't seen the wool felt c-crown Dorfmans for a few years.

I understand using the less expensive wool but couldn’t they at least have used the correct crown? I had one of those Dorfman hats as my first one, that’s what started it all for me. Unfortunately the first Washington downpour it saw turned it into a witches wrinkled face.

I'm sorry, even if they do have the licensing, they simply should NOT be allowed to produce and sell things that don't even slightly resemble a true Indy hat. Not saying it has to be expensive although my Herbert Johnson most certainly is the most expensive hat that I have ever or will purchase. The crown on the licensed Indy had that I had bought for my father at least resembled Indy's hat although the top of the crown does not.

Might as well purchase a ballcap and stamp Indiana Jones on it and just say it is well because it says that it is. That is/was a horrible looking hat and should have never bore the name of the franchise and it certainly was not worthy of it in my opinion.

Agreed, but for the every day run of the mill person who could care less about details but just wanted a hat that came from their trip at Disney or just Licensed from LFL, it does the job. That and the fact a LOT of folks can’t afford the real deal yet, so this fills a perfect entry item to the hobby, no matter how terrible the details are.

Heck, back in the day all I could afford was either the Stetson or Broner versions, and they were pretty bad too.....but I was happy to have them and wore out seven before I could start moving up to better versions. ;)

I don't mind them being cheap at all but what I think is horribly wrong is putting Indy's name on it and the hat doesn't look the slightest bit like Indy's fedora. This hat personifies that aside from it being brown bears no real resemblance. Make all the cheapies they want but at least have it look like an Indy hat is what I am saying. I think that it's dishonest to the consume that is going on name brand recognition only. It angers me for folks like us who are huge fans but are fooled by a corporation that decides to cut corners.

I agree with everything you say, with the exception of the ‘...folks like us being fooled...’

I don’t see any of us rushing to buy them. ;)

They’re made for those who either don’t care one way or the other or can’t afford better at this time. If fills a niche.

I see what you are saying and agree. I guess I am meaning those that are pure of heart that think and believe what they are getting is the real deal or close to it is all. If you don't care it's one thing. Bought my Dad one of the authorized Indy Gear ones and looks alright enough. Didn't know or understand all the crazy differences until I came here and met all you fine people! I know waaaaay too much now. Maybe that's a bad thing. Once seen cannot go unseen. lol

What can I say? Perhaps I too have become a bit fanatical when it comes to 'All things Indy'. There are worse addictions to be had I suppose. 8)

I honestly think if Disney sold a more screen accurate hat, they'd sell less of them than they did with the c-crown Dorfman hats. The lower, tapered crown is friendlier to a wider variety of faces than the true boxy crown. I'm sure there'd be a lot more significant others saying "take that thing off, you look ridiculous" with the SA hat.
