Belloq’s Panama Hat - Best Option?

Post by AttyOzzy »

Hi All,

Now that the New England Fall is upon us, I am thrilled to be able to wear my fedoras more comfortably.

Nonetheless, I would like to wear a hat most screen accurate to Belloq’s Cairo (and yes submarine) hat next summer.

Does anyone have a hatmaker and a hat model that is most similar to Belloq’s hat? I can’t saynthat I am easily finding one online. Has anyone successfully been down this road? If so, care to share? Much obliged!

Thank you!

Without pulling up a photo and comparing my mind says it’s closest to Brent Black’s Panama Hat’s of the Pacific) Havana Fedora.

Start on page 30 of this site. It gives you fairly good angles of the the hat all around.

I think its a basic short brimmed, center dent, trilby.

In the past, I've gotten a few close enough's from Panama Hats Direct

That’s about right. I have a panama I bought from Banana Republic in the early 80s that’s a dead ringer other than the ribbon.

Always thought Belloq's hat was on the Panamanian side. Made of straw weave I believe? Shouldn't even be very expensive. Depending on what you consider expensive.

Trilby, definitely.

Can't think of the name of the place to get them. Anyone else? Not to say you cannot get one here in the U.S. but there is a place outside of here. An Island. Ugh! Middle age memory! :x

I got my Panama hat from the J. Peterman Company:

I waited for an end-of-season clearance sale and a free shipping promotion last year.

Availability of Peterman products is seasonal and... kind of random.

End of season sale plus free shipping promotion, it ended up costing less than $30 USD. That is considerably less than the (far too high) original list price.

Now, last year I was able to take a Caribbean cruise, and I noticed similar hats in many of the cruise ship port souvenir shops at prices as low as $10 USD. The prices vary widely on Panama hats, from $10 to many thousands of dollars. It's quite a "rabbit hole" once you start reading about these hats online.

This Gentlemen's Gazette article has a brief overview of Panama hat history and some helpful illustrations of the various common shapes:

https://www.gentlemansgazette.com/panama-hat/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Montecristi Panama hats are usually considered the top of the line:

https://www.panamahatsco.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And if you really want to go in-depth (and see just how expensive a Panama hat can be), check out the Brent Black Panama Hats of the Pacific page:

https://www.brentblack.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Village Hat Shop offers three pages of Panama hats in a variety of styles and prices, including one (currently clearance priced) that looks like it may be identical to the Peterman hat. This suggests that the J. Peterman hat is actually a low-end Jaxon:

Those are expensive! Makes my Herbert Johnson Beaver Poet that I bought at over $740 usd seem tame in comparison to those prices! OUCH!

...for those prices they had best come with a absolutely free Bonita Señorita for life! LOL!

Man, those are some pretty great hats but even as much as I love to spend the dinero, even I cannot justify a $5000 much less $50,000 hat!

:shock: :shock: :shock:

My first 'real' fedora was an Akubra The Rink. It's made from polypropylene so some may turn up their noses, but it fits the bill nicely as a Belloq hat for me. I did replace the ribbon. On the site it appears black, but is actually maroon.
