Pulling the trigger
Hello,
So, I have been lurking through these forums forever. I started in the bullwhip forums, eventually moved to the fedora forum, and now have been pouring through the jacket forum. In all this time, the phrase "pulled the trigger" kept popping up whenever somebody committed to purchasing an item of gear. It never really made sense to me until I decided to buy an Indy jacket. There were suddenly so many variables and uncertainties that when when I finally bought a Wested, it really felt like pulling a trigger.
I ended up buying an off-the-rack, standard Raiders in goat from Wested, and I love it. I have owned it for a little less than a year, and I have worn it every chance that I get. However, because it is goat, it still looks brand new. And it is one size too big. I am a size 42, but I had read it was wise to order up one size, and I got a size 44. Not so big that it looks bad, but I would have been happier with a 42.
Now I am ready to pull the trigger again, on a Wested Hero. This time I am getting the size 42, which to my understanding should be much more fitted and snug, which is what I am looking for. But I have questions. I have been searching through this forum, but there is so much info, it is hard to keep it all straight. I emailed Wested with my questions, but their answers weren't quite clear to me.
First, I have decided to get a Hero in lamb. I really like the goat, and the only reason I am not getting another goat is I want it to show some distressing. But I would like the lamb to be as dark as the goat. If I understand what Wested was trying to tell me, the shrunken lamb is a lighter brown, so I get to choose between authentic or washed lamb. So which one of those is the closest to the appearance of goat?
Second, and the one I am most concerned about, is the back length on the Hero. I am six feet tall. On my Standard Raiders, the back is 25 inches, the sleeves are 24 inches, and they are perfect for me. The back hits just at the top of my rear pockets. I want the Hero to hit at that same spot. I asked Wested, if I liked the 25 inch back on a size 44 standard, what length back should I get on a size 42 Hero?
Wested responded that I should stay with a 25 back and 24 sleeves, but that doesn't sound quite right based on all the info I have read on COW. So what would all the Hero owners here think? Stay with 25? Shorten it to 24?

Re: Pulling the trigger
Go with the washed lamb, great grain, drapes and is nice and dark without a shiny finish.
As for the length, for the back I would definitely go with 24” If you like 25 in the off-the-rack jacket, you’ll have to go shorter in the hero cut to land in the same spot as it falls back on the shoulders more.
Sleeves are tricky as the hero has a fair amount of shoulder droop (over-wide shoulders) which in effect adds to the sleeve length. Definitely better to be too long than too short so maybe 23.5, unless you have broad shoulders that fill out the excess shoulder width. Then again, you’re dropping a size so maybe you had some shoulder droop in the 44 Raiders. If so, stick with 24.
Or, you could just have them make a Raiders in washed lamb if you like the current fit. Just keep the current back and sleeve and drop to a 42. The hero can be an “acquired taste” that some find odd and hard to get used to.

Re: Pulling the trigger
Not sure if this is the reply you're looking for, but are you committed to sticking with Wested? The way I see it, you've already got a Wested Raiders (and, from the sound of it, a good one!), so this might be a great moment to explore what other vendors have to offer: S&J are great and have leather offerings to fit all looks and many budgets, BK is pricey, but phenomenal, and Magnoli offers a great jacket at a great price. There's some fantastic choices out there if you're willing to branch out, and variety is the spice of life.
If you end up sticking with Wested, I think Tibor's right.

Re: Pulling the trigger
I own two Westeds and while they are great jackets I have to echo Mulceber's thoughts. Are you set on Wested? Wested jackets are great, no question, but I recently 'pulled the trigger' on a Steele & Jones in horsehide. I can tell you that Diego's customer service is amazing and he will take you through the measuring process to get your size right. Even for non-tailors such as myself.

Re: Pulling the trigger
I did look around at all the other sellers, but I think the amount I am looking to spend will keep me with Wested. My wife already gave an "Are you for real?" look when I told her I was buying a second jacket.
Thank you for the measurement advice! That is along the lines of what I had been thinking, but it is good to hear it from someone else. I definitely agree better to have it too long instead of too short.
I am hoping that I will be able to acquire the taste for the Hero. I think that I have the build to pull it off. I also really like the look of the wavy, nickel zip, and the relaxed look around the collar. I love the look of the collar when the jacket is half zipped, and the chest spreads open. I particularly like it when I wear a shirt and tie going to work. Nice combination of professional and rugged.
Side question. Does everyone wear the jacket half zipped? I always expected to wear the jacket open, instead I find myself zipping it all the time.
Thanks for the replies!

Re: Pulling the trigger
For me, zipping it up is only dependent on how cold it is outside!
Re: Pulling the trigger
Fair point. My default is wearing the jacket half-zipped - I find it a bit baggy for my taste when open, and every Indy jacket I've ever owned feels confining when I zip it all the way.rafferty74 wrote:I did look around at all the other sellers, but I think the amount I am looking to spend will keep me with Wested. Zipping is weather dependent for me.

you’d better get a defibrillator ready for her as your second won’t be your last

halfzipped is most common, but weather has it’s influence

Re: Pulling the trigger
You'e not really going to notice a one inch difference in length. Not if you are six feet tall and you're talking 24 to 25 inch range. I am six two and I have a range of jackets in lengths from 25 to 27 inches. They don't look much different to each other. Now, if you get an extra inch in the sleeves it can make a big functional difference.
As with all my jackets I do up my jacket when it is cold or windy. Not otherwise.

Re: Pulling the trigger
I thought about that also. I am fretting over a measurement about the width of my thumb. I was worried because I wasn't sure how much length the Hero added, while also considering the difference of going from 44 to 42. I tend to always overthink things.
I would make a terrible Indiana Jones. The movie would have gone nowhere. I would still be at alter, looking at the fertility idol, adding sand to the bag, taking it out...putting it back in...

Re: Pulling the trigger
Well said. It will be easier if you admit that this won’t be your last jacket, just another in the line of steadily “closer” to what you want. Ironically, my favorite jackets tend to be those not made for me.

Re: Pulling the trigger
Trigger has been pulled. Ordered a Raiders Hero in washed lamb, size 42, 24 inch sleeves, and split the difference on the back, and ordered 24.5 inches.
And who knows. Mayne one day I will decide I need a custom Wested. Or maybe try one of the other vendors.

Re: Pulling the trigger
Well, the Hero came today, and my feelings about it are mixed.
I think it fits great. I really like the Hero cut, and going down a size was absolutley the right choice. I gave myself a little high-five for being able to pull off the same jacket Ford wore. But it feels short. Not too short, but shorter than I had hoped. I measured and the back comes to 24 1/4. I hope that as it breaks in and the leather relaxes, it will seem a bit longer.
My biggest...issue? Disappointment? Maybe just uncertainty? Has to be the washed lamb, which I felt pretty confident about when I ordered. On the plus side, the color is a nice dark brown, maybe a shade darker that the goat. It is light, but feels strong. However, this washed grain it has just looks so off to me. All the wavy creases all over the jacket look so artificial, and as soon as I pulled the jacket out of the package and saw this grain, I was disappointed. I am sitting here in my living room, and the jacket is lying over there in our bedroom, and I keep walking past the door to peek in at it. It keeps alternating between looking dumb and looking not too bad.
However, I know myself well enough to know that the biggest problem with this jacket is my own expectations. I know how I am when comparing new and unfamiliar to old and comfortable. I am comparing my first "2nd jacket" to my already broken in first jacket. MY jacket. I am guessing your first Indy jacket is like your first car, or first crush. Always special to you.

Re: Pulling the trigger
Take some pics of the leather... curious ‘cause this doesn’t describe what I’ve seen. Maybe a new batch?
I bet the length is Raiders perfect by the sound of it, but you could take a wear pic if you’d like a second opinion...

Re: Pulling the trigger
My first Indy jacket was a USW in lamb. Great leather but it was way too short. I sold it...sometimes the first jacket is just that...the first! That means there are more to come...
Re: Pulling the trigger
I suspect the length isn't a problem. If it's about an inch below your belt, then that's the right length. People just tend to have trouble adjusting to the length of the Raiders jacket. The leather is another matter. I too would be interested in seeing it, but from your reaction, I think this issue is going to nag at you, and seriously affect your enjoyment of the jacket. Don't do anything hasty, but your best option may ultimately be to sell it either in the Cairo Bazaar or on eBay and put the money you get from that toward a new jacket. On your next jacket, it might be worth seeing if you can get leather samples, so you won't be going in blind.rafferty74 wrote:Well, the Hero came today, and my feelings about it are mixed.

Re: Pulling the trigger
I agree with Mulceber, the thing that annoys you likely won’t stop. My Todd’s costumes jacket is more or less perfect, but one sleeve is from a different batch of leather from the rest and is noticeably stiffer. After the better part of a decade, it hasn’t relaxed at all, and likely never will. It more or less didn’t bother me, but I always kept feeling it and playing with it and it always kind of irked me. I rarely wear it anymore outside of cosplay because I don’t like the fit of the raiders hero jacket except for screen accuracy, but even when it was my daily wear jacket, I was certain that one day I’d need a better one. I can only imagine how much worse it would’ve been if it had been something more visible.

It’s good to be back! The Indy bug has bitten me again, but this time around I’m focusing more on KB gear than Indy gear. Hopefully I don’t disappear again anytime soon...

Re: Pulling the trigger
Just my two cents. I have a Wested Hero in authentic lamb, fits fine, but the back sorta bulges out and if I tighten the straps, just get more snug. But it fits.
Well this is what I eventually did. I went to steel and Jones. Sent lots of pics and measurements. And they talked me through it. I not only did I end up with a jacket that fits, but is awesome to boot. I’ll post a pic soon. I went with the new ToD hero they just came out with.
In short S&J took good care of me, sell off this one (afterwards) use it to take measurements from and make your next one even better.

I friend of mine got a jacket recently in the washed lamb and to be frank, the grain is awesome, exactly the character you need in a Raiders that the standard lamb sanitises out. I'm quite surprised people are not shouting it's praises.
Re: Pulling the trigger
Agree with KT here, I picked up a second hand washed lamb and it’s about the best leather I’ve had; color, drape, weight, grain, break-in, just excellent stuff for a Raiders. That’s why I’m curious for a pic.
Re: Pulling the trigger
Yeah, definitely worth seeing some photos first. Often times what you think looks screen accurate is more a product of your own assumptions than what's actually on screen.

Re: Pulling the trigger
Hello,
I didn't mean to disappear from a thread I started, and I have been trying to figure out how to post pictures, without success. Regardless, I would have to say that my washed lamb looks pretty similar to other pictures of washed lamb I have found on this site. Maybe "wavy creases" wasn't the best way to describe it. I was not trying to imply that there is something wrong with this skin. I would bet most people would look at it and think it looks great. It just really isn't my cup of tea.
I have already decided that I will be buying another Hero, as soon as I can work it into my budget. I would rather have exactly what I want instead of trying to make this one work for me.
Not sure what I am going to do with the washed lamb jacket. I should sell it and cut my loses a little. There is another part of me that wants to go the distressing route with it, and just bash it against some trees and drag it behind the car for a while. Not something I had ever intended to do, but with an extra jacket, it might be worth a try. I might even create a favorite jacket.

Re: Pulling the trigger
Put it on Cairo Bazaar with measurements. Zip it up and provide:
- Pit-to-pit
- Back (24.5”?)
- Sleeve (24”?)
- Shoulders
Pics always help build irrational jacket lust, but you can list without. MANY of us have bought and sold a lot of jackets here. As I mentioned, I often find I’m more pleased (less critical?) with jackets not made for me

Hi guys! Recently just found out about this forum.
Basically I'm new to the Indy gear game and so far I've acquired my first jacket almost a month ago. Got myself a custom standard raiders jacket in goatskin from Wested and so far I'm inlove with it! I chose the goatskin since it's the balance of endurance and softness, a happy medium between lambskin and cow hide as Wested states. Wanted to get a jacket that can last me a long time as well for the years to come which I can take around in other places that could take a beating.
Anyway, part of me wants to pull the trigger on my next jacket which would be the Hero Raiders in shrunken lambskin (yup, I really like the raiders look). At first I was thinking of getting another custom standard but this time in shrunken lambskin, but I thought of trying something else, and I want to have a "hero" version of the jacket. I live in the Philippines and the climate here is pretty hot. The goatskin is manageable (I'm the type of person who loves wearing jackets so I'm used to it ) but with the heat here, sometimes I can only wear it when I'm at the office, somewhere cold, or if it isn't too hot outside. I'm a filmmaker and if I'm not editing or color grading my work, I'm out in the open shooting since I'm a cinematographer. As I said, it's manageable but I want to have a secondary option that I can use as a field jacket, which made me think on getting a second one which is the shrunken lambskin which seems to be much more lightweight and breathable (screen accurate too).
I read though that the Hero version is quite tricky because of the oversized shoulder pattern which was specifically made for Ford. I'm a really short person, I fall within 5'3-5'4 feet. Yes I'm that short huhu.
My custom standard measurements in my current goatskin is: Sleeves- 22 inches, back length- 22 inches, chest- 36. The length of my jacket falls just below my belt, the sleeves hit my knuckles but when I move around it reaches my wrists.
I reached out to wested and asked them about this but they just told me: "So if you want it to finish at 22” then order 22” and we will make it finish at 22” for you" but according to the things I've been reading here, some get an inch shorter so that it can fall at their desired measurement.
So right now I'm pretty confused on what to do. What do you guys recommend? Especially with my shorter frame. Should I still go for the hero or stick to a custom sized shrunken lamb? What I love about the hero is that it's snugger. I really want my second jacket to be amazing as well. Can't afford to have returns since I live at the other side of the globe hehe.
Here are some pictures of me with my current goatskin ( standard raiders ). I look exhausted since I've been editing videos the whole day hehe. Anyway Thanks in advance, will appreciate your help!

Re: Pulling the trigger
I think the fit of the current jacket is perfect. As you noted, the Hero jacket is tricky, and unless you're planning on making a trip to England anytime soon (in which case you can just try on Hero jackets at Wested), I'd say just stick with the custom Raiders in shrunken lambskin. The measurements of the jacket you have now, with shrunken lamb would be a great Raiders jacket.

As much as I'd want a hero, I think it is quite tricky. Thanks so much! Will keep this in mind!Mulceber wrote:I think the fit of the current jacket is perfect. Re: Pulling the trigger
If you're dead set on buying another jacket (who am I kidding, right, we all are), would you consider an inch or two longer in the body? Yours doesn't look too short at all. I just have some that are about the same length as your and then I have some that are slightly longer. Then I have one, a Hero, that is about an inch too long. Overall, I like them a little longer than the one you pictured. They are more versatile, meaning I can wear them with my button-down shirts either tucked-in or un-tucked. The longer ones look better on me anyway. A Hero might not be to bad for you. Your frame looks like it would fit nicely into a Hero around the shoulders and arms.
Your jacket looks great, by the way. That goat distresses very, very nicely.

Big fan of the hero. I have 2... actually 3. But these are my favourite 2. One is slim and trim the other is a more comfortable fit. The trimmer one looks more SA.

I told myself that one purchase one would be enough but I guess I was wrong
Length wise, I'd stick to my current length which is leaning more on the shorter side, just a few inches below my belt line. With my short height, adding a few more inches would make me look shorter sadly.
The goat is VERY tough. Not even a single scratch on it even with the outdoor activities I do under the heat haha. I wouldn't want to artificially age it though, one of the reasons why I want another jacket in shrunken lambskin which can actually distress faster naturally.
When you got your Hero version, did you order the same length as your standard ( back length and sleeve length ) or did you get it a few inches shorter since it falls back longer than the standard sizes?
Thanks for the help as well! Much appreciated

Lovely jackets!!! Especially the fit of the slimmer one, looks amazing. What skins are they in?
When you say slim, is that just a shorter length for sleeves and back or did you also change your chest size? Either way both look great!
How did you get the measurements for your SA one? Did you get an inch shorter than your standard size or still got the same?
This second jacket dilemma is driving me nuts haha! I really want a hero version of the jacket ( it's a hero version who wouldn't want one ) but it's just the sizing that's making the choice difficult for me. With my short frame, I want the my back length to hit right below the belt. So I'm thinking if I should get a one inch shorter so it can hit my desired back length ( same for the sleeves).
I noticed as well that when I zip my jacket, the front length ( at times ) tends to look shorter than my back length. Doesn't bother me though since it doesn't look off nor does it make the jacket look short, just something I noticed.

Re: Pulling the trigger
You could always talk to Wested and tell them that your current jacket (provide them with the measurements) fits perfectly and you'd like to know what measurements they recommend for a Hero jacket.
For images, I'd recommend instead using an off-site image host (I recommend Imgur, as they allow you to do resizes on their site). Once you have the url of the photo on the site, paste it into your post, highlight it, and click the Img button right above the text box. That will embed the photo in your post. You're allowed up to 15 photos per post, at a size of 640x480 or less.

I actually did reach out to them. They told me to get the same measurements as my standard. But according to some things I've read here in the forum, they say the hero falls longer at the back and sleeves, that's why some get an inch shorter. So yeah, that's where I got confused.
Thanks on the image tip!!!
Re: Pulling the trigger
Understandably! My understanding as well is that the Hero is shorter. I would disregard Wested's advice here. Maybe somebody here on the forum who has both could offer some comparative measurements? I would, but I bought my custom when I was still a teenager, and I grew a couple inches before I bought my Hero, so they don't fit the same.

Re: Pulling the trigger
I see.
Yeah, was surprised with their reply to be honest. I thought they'd give me exact measurements. When you got your Hero, did you base your measurements as is or did you adjust it knowing it falls shorter?

Re: Pulling the trigger
lol, tbh, I didn't even know that different measurements were a thing. I ironically based the measurements on my Indy 4 jacket from Tony Nowak and somehow it turned out pretty well, although the sleeves were about an inch too long. Come to think, back length may have been an inch too long as well, but an extra inch of back length isn't as noticeable as sleeve length. I'm not sure I'd advise you going the route I went. So, basically, I'm guessing that the measurements you had, minus an inch from back and sleeve length would probably work, but you might want to get a second opinion.

Re: Pulling the trigger
Tried the image technique you told me but it just ends up being a small little icon with the word image, probably I'm doing something wrong hehe.
I'm glad your jackets turned out well!!! I'm sure you felt relived once you found out about the difference in length.
Yeah, will probably take an inch off the lengths once I've decided to pull the trigger. Right now I'm still holding it haha.
Really appreciate the help man! So glad I found this forum

Re: Pulling the trigger
Everything is smaller, I'm normally a 40 with a short back and sleeves. The darker jacket is about half a size smaller and and inch shorter, it's been made further smaller because I washed it! (Don't do this unless you are sure!).LostRaider25 wrote:

The darker jacket is a very thin cow Peter used to have, I'm not sure if it was "lambtouch cow".
The lighter one is ribby sheep I bought it from a guy in Marrakech.... it has an interliner of air mesh in an attempt to give it a bit of insulation, so it it fits a bit bigger. Current washed lamb would be similar.

Interesting. Glad to see your jackets still striding well! How’s washed lamb compared to shrunken lambskin
