Does anyone else habitually keep their car keys in the right handwarmer pocket?
It caused a problem with my cowhide wested, to be more specific a big hole in the bottom corner of the lining, right through to the bottom of the cargo pocket which I was unable to reach with a needle and thread.
Now then, in an attempt to recitfy this I foolishly resorted to superglue in a haphazard moment of madness. Bad plan. The superglue caused the cotton lining to rot, making the hole even bigger and the problem thus worse.
What was I thinking? Superglue indeed....
Anyway, I'm now taking it to a local guy to fix up for me.

Bunches of keys have destroyed the pockets of my jackets in the past - also jean pockets - so now I do not put them in the hand warmer pockets of my Wested. In fact next time I go to my nearest big city I know a reputable shop which can alter leather clothing and I intend having my handwarmer pockets stitched up! Probably not true to an Indy jacket though...
I did actually consider having the pockets stitched up - I think I remember reading sometime ago that another forum member had this done and it turned out OK.
The handwarmer pockets are useful, but not very durable in my opinion, the weakest part of the design. A few months ago, I had to have the stitching at the bottom of the left side handwarmer replaced as it had come away with use. Also, using these pockets distorts and stretches the leather at the sides of the cargo pockets over time.
I've had jackets in the past develop holes because of keys which is why I now put them in my MkVII when I go out. Last thing I want is a hole in my Wested! I've also thought that if you have a key holder with a leather exterior to wrap around the keys, that it would also protect pockets from unneccesary harm. I have one of these things for a smaller set of keys, but I haven't come across one which will contain a whole mess of keys. That set goes in the bag!
I guess Indy must've left his keys under the doormat...
I wonder if Peter would line a pocket entirely with leather to help combat this problem? It's generally the cotton lining and stitching that goes, not the leather.
Actually I don't think the handwarmer pockets are very useful at all. What are they for? Do they warm hands? I certainly wouldn't store anything valuable in them (like a wallet) because I suspect things fall out of them rather easily. The "main" pockets are much more useful and secure!
There was a trend a few years ago (1980s) to sell A2 jackets with handwarmer pockets but the real afficiados (isn't that a type of fruit??) steered clear of these, as the original A2s didn't have handwarmer pockets (military people shouldn't be seen standing around with their hands in their pockets anyway!). Wasn't the Indy jacket modeled on an A2? My belief is that handwarmer pockets were included in the (original?) Indy jacket "by mistake" since "modern (1980s) jackets have handwarmer pockets".
Maybe Indy's had them (you guys will know) but I think it would be a better jacket without them!
I disagree. I find the handwarmer pockets quite useful. And yes, I have been known to warm my hands in them from time to time.
My keys will fit comfortably in them, although I prefer to put them in my bag so they don't damage the pocket lining. As for a wallet, it either goes in my pants pocket or a cargo pocket on the outside of the jacket. As far as I'm concerned, I like the handwarmer pockets; I think they look good and are equally useful. (I can never have too many pockets. ) I've never had anything fall out of the handwarmers, either.
Honestly, If the Indy jacket didn't hae handwarmers, I probably wouldn't have gotten the jacket.

Funnily enough, that also happened to me while back, only it was the handbrake lever in my car and not a chair handle.
You misunderstood the regulation.....it's not the removal of the handbrake that violates the law.....it's act of the car or tree your car plows your into when you didn't SET the missing handbrake that does. Regards. Michaelson
To toss in my $.02 here, I love the hand warmers. When it's chilly out and I don't have my gloves handy I can cram my mitts into them. When I have somethign in my hand that I'm goign to need to get at again in a few minutes and don't feel like rootign around in my pants pocket I can throw it in one of the hand warmers. I use them with much more frequency than I do the cargo pockets.
I have found though that I have to be more consciencious when I wear my jacket. For instance, I sat dowin in my chair about a month ago and the right hand warmer pocket caught on the arm. I didn't notice and continued to sit until I heard two popping noises... It was two of the stitches on the pocket. Luckily I stopped myself in time to prevent major damage, but it still was a sore blow to someone who only had the jackets for 2 weeks. It hasn't gotten any worse, and eventually I'll get around to repairing it, but just think what would have happened if it had been lamb instead of bullet-proof goat I think once I get my lamb I'll just stand in the middle of a room all the time
