Pros and cons to having more plaits in your whip?

Post by Woodsrunner79 »

In my search for a satisfactory whip. I've encountered many fine vendors. All offer a whip in 12 plait. Some in 16. Only a few in 24.

For general cracking (I'm no professional mind you) is there any advantages to going with a 16 or higher plaited whip?

That's a good question; I always assumed a higher plait count was just more impressive because it took longer to make, but I have NO idea if that's correct. I'd be interested in learning the answer to this question as well.

I thought I'd heard that wider strands can be more durable.

I can't speak to durability or longevity. From what I was reading last night, my understanding is that the higher the plait count, the smoother the "feel/rollout."

Yes, that is an 8-ft. 16-plait Indy bullwhip from JM Whips, based on the rare David Morgan Classic Bullwhip sold in the late 1990’s. It has the same shape and balance of the Indy whip, with a higher strand count. Basically, a really neat variant of the famous Indiana Jones model.

Nice link man! And of course there is no discernible difference between the two but even that answers the question.
