Wested Goat vs Lamb
I am trying to decide between authentic lamb and auth goat for a Wested ToD. I've only ever had their lambskin. How does the goat compare in weight, drape, color, grain? Is it stiff? Some have said it is shiny? Is it much thicker than lamb? Thanks!

Re: Wested Goat vs Lamb
If Wested is using the same goat they were using three years ago, it's soft. It's thicker than their old lamb. It's not heavy at all, to me. Mine had a lot of grain, right out of the bag. Is that something you want with a TOD? I've seen mostly smooth looking leathers in the pictures I've seen of the TOD's. The goat has that brown undertone, though, which is nice when distressed. You can get rid of the shine with a little alcohol and just go over it a bit.

I guess i'm generally looking for relatively smooth but some grain is good. Is the authentic goat darker than the authentic lamb? The brown undertone sounds nice. I want to make sure it's not super thick/heavy and hangs ok. I have a striated lamb from USWINGS and for some reason it seems really thick and heavy. Kind of puffy leather in a way. I'm thinking it would be nice to try something different for a change.Prodigal Son wrote:If Wested is using the same goat they were using three years ago, it's soft. It's thicker than their old lamb. The goat feels tough and it's not thick. It's not thin, either. It's pretty much the typical dark Indy jacket brown that looks gray in some light. You've seen it. It's got a relaxed drape. It's not puffy. There's a picture of a TOD jacket on a thread here and the grain looks a lot like the grain of my goat Hero from 3 years ago. On that same thread, Holt posted pictures of his TOD that he distressed. I couldn't see if he mentioned what skin it was, but the jacket looks awesome. For me, goat was always the perfect blend of light, tough, and supple. Lamb was just way to thin, but I've heard the new stuff is more substantial. I'm sure someone will have more info here, as far as lamb goes. Enjoy your TOD! I've always wanted one.

If you have only had lambskin, goatskin can be a little off-putting at first. It has kind of a vinyl-like feel when compared to softness of lambskin. Otherwise, it wonderfully strong stuff, light weight, and drapes fairly well.

No, I was talking about the picture with a close-up on the side vent, down by the buckle. It's from the same thread.

I don't know about this new goat being off-putting, though. I felt the old Wested goat from years ago and you're right, it is off-putting when you first get it, but it wears in over time. This new goat, though. I was pretty surprised when I first saw it, because I was expecting the same old goat from years ago with that plastic-like coating. The quality feels much improved now, compared to the old stuff. Now, I'm talking about the goat from three years ago. Maybe it's changed since then. If so, hopefully it's changed to something even better.
It'd be cool if they'd use a cowhide that has an easily-distressed finish. Not pre-distressed, just easily-distressed. Like the pre-distressed cowhide, just with the same finish without the distressing. The finish would wear rapidly with use. I've got a Bruno half belt from film jackets that does that.
Re: Wested Goat vs Lamb
They keep changing the goat. Last year they were using a very dark soft goatskin (frankly too dark IMO). Recent goat jackets I've seen coming out in the last month or two have been brown comparable to the Authentic lamb.
It's definitely not that horrible stiff plastic goatskin they were using years ago.
Personally I've not bonded with any of the goat jackets I had. The second jacket I got quite severe shrinkage from a bit of shower treatment. The jacket litterally dropped a whole size.
I think if you picked the Goatskin they are using now you would like it, based on the pictures and description I've seen of it.

Yeah, I personally like a lighter brown, as well. The shot where Jones is reading the map in Hawaii looks like a lighter brown than I'm used to, and I like it. The leather has that thicker, puffier look on the sleeve, too. I'd like to try one of these newer lambs that Wested is using.
Re: Wested Goat vs Lamb
Found a Wested Facebook post from September 2016 describing the new goatskin. They provided a video and some images of the new leather.

That was last years new goatskin. As I pointed out they are now using a much browner one.
