Refinishing a handgun

Post by Woodsrunner79 »

Has anyone de-nickeled a handgun before? I picked a .455 hand ejector that has been chopped to 4" and the chambers reamed out to take .45 colt. The finish is an older nickel job. Not pitted or scaling yet but very thin in the high wear spots. Whoever did the work did a beautiful job, both the cut and the finish. I'd like to have it stripped and either reblued or parkerized. Any suggestions on who to use or what terms to look for when people describe their process.

I found this discussion on another forum that you may find of use:

I've never done this procedure before, so proceed at your own risk.

Sounds almost too easy. Gonna have to check brownells. If I go through with it, I'll be sure to chronicle my experience.

Thanks, michaelson.

Make sure you read the reviews.

A Google search of 'Brownells Nickel Stripper' will pull up other forums documenting others' results with it as well. Good luck!

After kicking my googlefu into high gear. I found many a mixed review on the room temp stripping solution. Everyone seems to like the super strip, but at almost $100 without the car battery needed to make it work, I decided to pass.

So I started looking for commercial plating and am going to give these gentlemen a try.

I'll let y'all know how it goes.
