Last Crusade Donavan's Apt fedora from Screen Capped Hats

Post by Screencapped »

Here's the fourth handmade fedora I've made on commission. It's my version of the hat Indy wore in LC in the scene in Walter Donavan's Apartment and also Henry Sr's house. It's made from a rabbit blend in dress felt. I also use the galoon ribbon used by HJ on the film hats.

Good job on the hat! What are you using for a liner? :-k

Thanks!
Right now my hats will have just basic innards. Plain white liners and either brown or black leather sweatbands. Down the road I'll have a logo designed and printed on both hopefully.

Looks great! It's a good match for what we see on screen.

Preciate that Mulceber!
My goal is to create the most screen accurate hats possible. I may not have access to the best felt at the moment but I'm making up for it with overall look and construction I feel.
I'll have a Raiders fedora to show soon so stay tuned. :TOH:

Agreed! Grade A felts can wait until later - at the moment you're producing some killer stuff with what you have.

Since I made that last post I've discovered that I AM using pretty decent felt afterall. The 20X beaver I use (which is 50% beaver with rabbit/nutria mix) is identical to the felt used to make my AB which was supposedly "pure beaver". It should also be noted that I paid over twice as much as I charge for my beaver felt hats.

I have a hat that is nutria. It’s a made for German market borsalino.
Honestly I can’t tell between it and my other vintage lids in rabbit.

I'm sure it was pure beaver - any hat that is 20% beaver or above is hard to distinguish from pure beaver when you're just going by texture.

Still, that finish is looking a bit rough for such a nice hat body - I guess I'd suggest more pouncing?

When I said the felts were identical I didn't say anything about it being based on texture alone. The thickness, feel, density...all line up.
As for the pounce job, when you order a hat from me I'll pounce it until it shines or leave it a little fuzzy like this particular customer wanted. That's one of the perks with a custom/bespoke hat. You get it the way YOU want it.

All of those would be explained by it being more than 20% beaver: during the felting process, the individual beaver hairs get in between the rabbit ones, which leads to greater density, better texture, and a better overall feel. ;) If you're trying to suggest that Steve Delk was lying about producing 100% beaver felt hats, then nope, sorry, I'm not buying it. Ah, didn't realize it was by order of the customer. :TOH: I retract my comment on the pounce - good job.

I have three hats that are said to be 100% beaver felt. One feels really malleable almost clay-like. Never had to use water to set the bash. Just put it in and worked it on each time I wore it little by little. So not floppy and not stiff. Just sort of in between. It has been through one reblock and it’s my AB from Steve.

Next up is a western custom hat and it was more stiff out the gate but now it’s been worked over a lot and is not as stiff at least around the brim. Crown is stiffer. But it feels more corse than the AB which has a velvet like feel.

Third is another raiders fedora. Floppy as heck with not much of that clay like feel the AB has in texture. Took a good bit of water (steam) to set bash but it looks like it did a year ago when I set it.

That said the last two were made by penman hats. The AB legacy raiders I have in rabbit has a finish and feel like my penman raiders in beaver. The difference is the ab legacy felt is thicker while the penman raiders is thin like my AB raiders from Steve.

Bottom line. I still can’t tell the difference from rabbit, blended or 100% beaver as three of mine said to be 100% beaver all feel different.

Here's another Last Crusade fedora I was commissioned to put together recently. This one's handmade from 20X beaver (50% beaver mixed with rabbit/nutria)
