Handmade Seaplane fedora from Screen Capped Hats

Post by Screencapped »

I've finally started making hats to accompany my custom leather gear. Check out this 'Seaplane' hat I finished today: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1304680 ... 181953717/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I recommend Imgur. It's free and really easy to use.

Is it just me or does that felt look really thick? Look at the unfinished edge around the rim. That begs the question, how thick should an Indy hat be? Are there different thicknesses of felts?

Short answer is, yes, there are different thicknesses for felt. So called "dress bodies" tend to be thinner, while "outdoor/western bodies" tend to be thicker.

The thickness of the felt, however, does not necessarily play into the density, durability and/or floppiness. I have beaver felt hats that are thinner than rabbit felt though beaver felt is generally more dense than rabbit. And all of them have different degrees of floppiness depending on the amount of stiffener in the felt.

I don't know if there is a consensus as to the correct thickness of an Indy style fedora.

Ironically I had a western style hat reblocked to be a seaplane fedora and the felt is of similar thickness to this hat.

Yep - looks like this is a relatively thick one, but that isn't a bad thing. I think the the ribbon could use some work though: it doesn't look like it's lying flush with the hat all the time (especially in picture 2). Good work though!

Thanks for the compliments guys :TOH:
The felt is not a blend just pure rabbit and very high quality. The Last Crusade hat I finished today is made from a really nice dress felt made from rabbit felt also.
As for the ribbon not being flush with the crown that's because I bashed a really tight pinch into the hat right before that picture was took which created a gap between the felt and ribbon.
