Source for 50mm dark-brown ribbon?

Post by Howard Weinstein »

I'm thinking of trying to do a Young Indy hat, with the wider, non-dimensional brim.
Does anybody know of a source for the wider 50mm ribbon in more-or-less accurate dark-brown color?
Thanks!

Check out the discussion with HJ's head hatmaker on the Young Indy hat: http://indygear.com/cow/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=67395" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Jack was able to give some good insight into how the hat was made.

The first place you should probably check is the ribbon company, TW Bracher, of Stockport, England. They're the source for the 39mm ribbon, so there's a decent chance they're the source for the 50mm ribbon as well. If not them, then Jack might share the source with you if you ask him really nicely.

Unfortunately, here in the US, Schiff was the only manufactor of decent ribbon, and they closed at some point.
What you would want to look for is their #704 Grosgrain. But at this point, it's only going to be "whats left on stock"
and likely have to buy larger then you want quantities.

I will see if I have anything kicking around in that width.

These guys seem to have taken over where Schiff left off.
Offray used to be a quality manufacturer back in the day.

Good idea. Thanks, Mulceber. I may try that.

I'll try that link/search. And, yes, if you find anything among your ribbon stash, please do let me know.
Thanks!

Thing about Brachers is, you have to buy in bulk before they'll sell. I think the minimum is 50 meters. :TOH:

45, in point of fact, but you're right. Still, when you consider that they sell that 45 meters for a grand total of 50 pounds, plus shipping, it isn't TOO bad...it's paying a pretty penny to put a ribbon on one hat, but in the grand scheme of things it is affordable. Another possibility is that if you contact Jack and explain the situation and emphasize the fact that you're just looking to make a hat for yourself, he MIGHT be willing to sell you a yard of it at a profit.

I just checked my assorted stock... and this is what I have.

Image

Unfortunately, the widest I found is only 1 3/4".
The darkest being a dark bluish/green.

The HJ ribbon is shown on the far right for comparison.

The others are all about the same size. Their vintage stock, but would need to be hand dyed to get the black you want.
