The Perfect Height for a Raiders Hat.

Post by fedoraiders »

Hello Fans of the Raiders Hat.

I read a lot of messages about the perfect height of the Raiders hat.

The height of the open crown is not the most important but it must be have between 5 3/8 and 5 5/8 depending the shape of the block.

The most important is the height of the front pinch. The perfect height of the front pinch for the Raiders hat is between 4 1/2 and 4 3/4 depending the size of the head. 4 3/4 is really the maximum and it's for the guy who have a head over 60cm.

I think that the height of the block is the big problem now.

I have a block with 6 1/2 inches tall but I'm able to make a hat with a 4 1/2 front pinch with my block spacer. I create lot of spacers with a different sizes to adjust each block.

We need to find a perfect spacer for the perfect front pinch.

That it!

I hope this will help the community.

Jason

Approximate chart for a front pinch.
55cm, 56cm = between 4 7/16 and 4 1/2
57cm, 58cm = between 4 1/2 and 4 9/16
59cm, 60cm = between 4 9/16 and 4 5/8
61cm, 62cm = between 4 5/8 and 4 3/4

Note: It’s not my Raiders block on my pictures, it's a exemple.

From what I've gathered you're more of a hat "revisionist" than someone who makes them from scratch is this correct? If you ever decide to make customs I'd definitely be interested in having you make one for me. You do phenomenal work. :TOH:

I made several hats 100% handmade and it's true, I like transformed the existing hats.

Thanks for your good words!

The crown to the left and right of the pinch must be at least 1/2 " more than the front pinch.

This is an approximation but really not far from reality.

This is very interesting. Thanks for posting this! I do agree with you here. I have always found my bash, and a lot of the bashes I've seen to be a bit too tall, even though from other angles it might look right.

I wear the same size as you, 59 (23 1/8" to be exact) so the proportions should be pretty much exact with my hat. I have an Adventurebilt Crystal Skull in a Raiders Cairo bash now. I just tried lowering the front pinch and it definitely looks better on me. However it has made the sides taper more which has taken some work to get the mushroom look back. I guess the crystal skull block isn't quite as straight as the Raiders block. I've steamed it and tweaked it. I'll give it another go tomorrow and post how it turns out.

Would you consider doing a reblock on any hats? Looks like you have really nailed that Raiders block, I love your work.

This is an excellent discussion.
I've found that one of the hardest things to do is to lower the pinch on a hat and avoid creating taper. I had some success, but it is a pain. If anyone has any ideas to make this easier (short of re-blocking) I would certainly appreciate it. Thanks!

Thanks guys for your good words.

Unfortunately, I don't reblock the hats because I had a bad experience in the pass. Last year, I reblock a hat for my friend and the seam leather had broken.

Yes, A reblock improves the hats but it's impossible to have the same result as a hat 100% handmade and I'm afraid that fans don't take this into consideration.

The sweatband is a big problem and it's a cause of restriction.

I will consider the question for the reblock because I receive several request for this.

Also, the shipping is very expensive for us in Canada.

Thanks!

I receive a lot of private messages on Facebook about my post on the height and the crown of the Raiders hat. I put the same messages on the Raiders of the Lost Cosplay Group on Facebook.

It's very very important to have the real V between the front pinch and the crown like a Raiders hat. My hats are a 59cm and the front pinch are 4 1/2. It’s only the block who made this detail.
Image

And this is the crease of my hat. It's really deep! Note: the brim of this hat is too short and it's a temporary ribbon.
Image

You can look the right side of my hat.
Image

And it's the left side. I want to stay humble but honestly, this side of my hat is amazing. The all angles are perfect.

And for the pleasure, it's a little video.

Fedoraiders, you really should open up a hat-making business, even if only as a side gig. I think you get the Raiders hat in a way that few do.

Thanks my friend!

I don't want to become a official hat seller because I’m very busy by my true work and my family but If I could find good felt with a good color, I could make a hat occasionally. Maybe in the future!

Or, I will send my Curriculum Vitae to Herbert Johnson, lol! I'm sure I could bring a lot for the shaping. ;)

Hey, if you're ever in the mood to make a size 60 cm hat, let me know. :TOH: I'd happily be a guinea pig.

HJ should hire you - the shaping they've been doing has been good, but pretty standard. They need someone who REALLY obsesses about the Raiders hat to get it right.

Fedoraiders, your hats always look so great! Any tips on how you create that nice center crease with such flat sides like that? Do you use an iron, etc? Looks so nice!

Thanks for your good words!

Yes, I use the iron and a special technique to shape my hats.

Thanks again!

Hey Jason
Can you take a look at my bash and critique it? I’ve been using your insights as a guide.

Your hat look good but it lost the shape seen from the side. It's little bit conique.

It is very hard to modify the hats without losing the block shape.

Where do you byu this hat?

It’s an HJ reboot. I tried to give it a muffin top shape so it looks more SOC. Is that what you’re referring to?

I think that on your third picture, the crown is really to taper on the back of your hat.

It's maybe the hat block that HJ use or the angle of your picture!

Look this picture to understand.

I see what you mean. So what is the solution? Do I need to have it reblocked?

Edit: Actually, forgot to mention that this is a size 57 hat that HJ stretched to 57.5 to fit my head.

Here is my Akubra Fed in its current state. So far I have re-blocked it (3 times now) replaced the sweatband and the ribbon
with supplies from Thomas at Advintage. It is my yard work and no worries hat.
EVERYTHING i have done to it I have learned from the amazing people on this forum. Working on it has made me confident
enough to tweak my latest SoC from Thomas but that is another story...

Jason,
I know that this thread is focused on the height of the crown (which is all excellent research and information), but I'm curious about the brim and whether the width of the dimensional cut would change depending on the hat size? Do a size 56 and 60 both have the same width or does it graduate?
