Giving an old hat back its life.. well somewhat.. ***Cairo!

Post by Holt »

Michaelson... LOOK AWAY!!

Allright, I have this very old hat, Its like 10 years old. Its one of my firsts ever! It's in really bad shape. Loose stitches, some bad felt spots. It was in some desperate need of a reblock.

So I threw it on my Raiders block to get the Raiders back in it and I pretty much destroyed it some more after the block.

I needed to rubb the rust of my old Cairo hat skills and this was the perfect hat until I get to use them again on the new Herbert Johnson!! :whip:

Anyways, for those interested, I am tryingt o build a ''screen accurate'' Cairo Indy these days and I thought I'd start with the hat as it is the most important look to get the Cairo Indy. The dust, the sweat, that fubar look of the hat. So COOL!!!

I wanted this hat to be uber dusty. Like the one we see with the Mechanic, and in the truck. The arm shot scenes. LOVE IT!!!

Here she is, the prototype Cairo hat.

I hope you cairo fans like!

Can't say I'm a fan of taking even an old hat and abusing it to this degree, but I am a fan of what you've been able to accomplish recreating the Cairo hat.

Whenever I see that Holt has started a new thread in the Gear Section I get a wide smile on my face and usually say something like "We're all about to see some Impressive Hat/Jacket VooDoo"

...and it ALWAYS proves to be True!

The LC is strong in me you know ;) Regardless, the cairo had a looser pinch at the bottom by the ribbon. ;)

I have another hat on the block as we speak. I never can resist the urge of reblocking hats even tho they are completley new....

I need that well of souls hat. My personal favorite of the raiders hats. ;)

Will be making a new thread on that soon.

 Outstanding... the great thing about this hat, is you can hang it up in your garage and no one will bat an eye... or you could put it on a stand in a glass case and get lots of questions about it. Just don't hang it on your regular hat rack... that would be gross. :-k

I allready have some plans for it yes. The glass case, hat and whip like screen used does it.

I have been meaning to do this forever but never got around to do it.

Thanks guys :TOH:

Possibly a tad heavy over the bow, but looks smack dab out of a movie still without being overly cartoonish.

How many applications did you have to do with the powder to get that look? Extremely accurate!

Thank you for that guys.

The whole hat is just a test run for the powder only. Its not suppose to be a 100% replica in bash. Its a cairo style only.

Uhm.. powder takes. I dunno. 4-5 runs and adding some permant sweat under the ribbon.

I think I used 2 hours to get it right.. constantly applying and brushing it.

Is that sawdust or sand perhaps? Doesn't look like Fullers earth to me. :TOH:

Good eye Anindyjones.

Not fullers earth. I wanted that sandy screen accurate look. Its a mixed powder blend I make.

Fullers is too grey for Raiders. It looks great on the LC hat.

I agree. Fullers is just too light to pull off the SOC. I experimented with a lot of different things years ago trying to find the right look including cornmeal which the gnats really enjoyed. ;)

I had heard of the cornmeal treatment before- maybe from someone else, who said the results also were not great when the hat got any moisture! I dusted a hat for a photoshoot using baby powder. The effect looked more like the dust from the Chacapoyan temple to me. It also brushed out easily the next day.
