Just got my custom Wested LC. Couldn't be more disappointe.

The brown goatskin is black. That holds true in full sunlight as well as indoors. There is nothing remotely brown about the exterior of the jacket, & I expect no level of distressing would change that. As it turns out the color of the jacket is a moot point as it does not fit at all. This is more my fault as I provided my chest measurement which they ask for as opposed to using the measurement around my gut, which due to a few beers and burgers is two inches more than the chest measurement. Despite adding gussets to the jacket, my arms cannot be lifted to more than a 45 degree angle. If I do lift my arms farther than that, the bottom of the jacket rides up above my stomach. I'm guessing that this is due to the shoulder measurement not being correct. I provided it (despite it being optional) and I did it exactly as pictured in their measurement chart, but I suppose if I were to reduce it by an inch [maybe] it would work. I'm thinking that perhaps due to my build, a jacket from them, even with adjusted measurements just might not suit my frame. Also noticed that the collar looks EXTREMELY lopsided, though that may be do in part to the poor fit of the jacket.

I'm reluctant to return it, given the loss I'll take on it, & prices on eBay seem to fall well short of the $305 I paid. I may give it to my dad as a gift & just give up on the dream of sporting the Indy jacket. Even if I could get the right fit, the black color is NOT what I want, & based on all of my research, I felt strongly that goatskin was the ONLY way I wanted to go.

I would seriously contact Wested first before you made any decisions. Stop wearing it and don't alter it. If you ordered brown and actually got black, that is there fault and should be remedied. I can't help but wonder if you were accidentally sent the wrong jacket.

Hi, the riding up of the jacket when raising the arms is a common problem of LC jackets .Unfortunately its a design fault of the jacket-the arm hole placement is too low unlike the raiders jacket that has them higher up. I have experienced this in LC jackets I have ordered and adding gussetts doesn't seem to help the problem :(

I had previously bought a Wested Raiders off of eBay a few weeks back for a song. It was "brown" goatskin & also black. It was too small as well, but given the price, I rolled the dice on it as the seller's description made it appear it would fit. At any rate, I realize that skins will not always be a uniform color & im wondering if most of their goatskin just looks black at this time.

I can tell many things about wested, but they send me exactly what i want. LC dark brown lambskin jacket. There were few things, for someone like nothing, but for me, after years? It start become itchy because of that few things. Well, wested made fine jacket for extremely reasonable price - there i would start looking for problems (offcourse, you can find some user who bought they jackets from Wested and there are perfect, some of the even said that my jacket fits ferfect too)
Well, anyway, do not give up in searching for your jacket. Maybe, just maybe, you need to pay a little more, for more made for you jacket? I take my chances with steel&jones. Where i go? I do not know. We will find out together ;y

To all new comers to the hobby I can tell you this much after being a member for 10 years.

Do your research on jackets before hit ''buy now''.

These jackets arent your normal cut jackets. They actually are movie props.

I realize you just have become a member and many people post their first post AFTER they have bought the jacket. I feel bad for you having to go thru all this trouble and the let down that came with the purchase. Sadly its a common thing with first time jacket owners. I can only recommend going up a few sizes. That will help on the fit and comfort. Or ask for different cut armholes on a LC. I have seen that happen as well.

Any pictures of you in it or the jacket itself?

The restrict of the arms is most likely not the shoulder measurments you gave but the armholes being cut low and towards the front. This is true to the original which again makes the jacket ride up and restrict the arms a bit and the whole jacket rides up above the belt.

So, if your a newbie and you read this? Do some research on the different jackets. These arent for everybody.

What Holt says is true. Getting a screen accurate jacket when you don't have a screen accurate body is fraught. I suspect the jacket is fine: the fit is the isssue. Most of us buy a few jackets before we get the right one and the correct fit. Before I worked out my sizing I bought about 6 jackets that didn't work. Sizing for clothing is one of the most poorly understood life skills and when you add the odd Indy pattern to the mix, a lot can go wrong. :CR:

Return and ask for reimbursement of the postage back? :-k You would not be able to get close to retail price on the secondary, 'used' market.

I have (too) many Indy jackets. A couple are the Wested LC in goat and horsehide. Both have what we call the "flying squirrel" effect which means the cut of the jacket will make it ride up if your arms are moved upwards. A couple of my more expensive non-Indy ones also do this.

I have received a couple dark brown Indy goatskin ones from other makers that almost look black and it is hard to tell if they are brown or black. I know they are brown but..... One from Gibson & Barnes and one from US Wings.

Sizing for me with Wested is to go up one size for the fit I want.

I generally stay out of Wested discussions because I don't have much good to say. I think that the only customers who should risk them are those who live in the UK, making returns and exchanges cheap. I don't believe they are incapable of making a good jacket, but it's very hit or miss.

In this case, I think you got what you asked for, you just didn't realize that it's not what you wanted. The fit is typical of Wested LC's, and their brown goatskin is possibly the blackest-looking in the market.

I own a 2nd hand Wested LC, which I never would have gotten as a practical jacket. I fills the role of costume jacket, with the bonus that I can wear it unzipped for real life on predictably mild days. I bought it because I can't afford the practical/costume all-in-one that I want.

The trick to finding the perfect jacket is to forget about accuracy or name provenance. Decide what you want in a jacket, then research and ask around to find the one that will provide. Regrettably, this often means accepting a higher price tag.

If you can find a way to return that jacket, or sell it, do it. But don't give up. There are jackets out there that will suit you.

That is the very first and very large problem with that jackets.
You spend so many times, when you buying your first dreamed jacket, searching for measurements, for patterns and other screen accuracy things, that you completely forgot about that, that jacket from your dreams looks great, but not on you ;)
Mine wested LC Jacket looks great, just as it should look. Just like on movie. But it doesn't mean it looks just great on me.
This is why i start looking for another one, not screen accurate, but looks like indy jacket. It doesn't have to right pockets, ideal like in movie storm flap or others things. Most important to me this time is, it should fit me like a glove. And that's it.
I'm afraid that Wested couldn't do that just the way i like. So i start with S&J. When I finished, I'll let you know if i'm satisfy in 100%.

So I've read about the weird cut of the Raiders which was what prompted me to go with the Last Crusade. If I go with the Raiders jacket, should that (in theory) eliminate the flying squirrel issue?

Also, how much of a difference am I going to see if I go with the cowhide instead of the goatskin? Would the goat look less black with age, wear, and tear?

like Chewbacca said, the biggest problem with Wested is the return. I was lucky the return covered the mailing fees to receive and return (meaning I lost). I would say if it's your first jacket (or new) keep local until you really know what you want first before buying overseas.

Having said that though I did take a chance on Steele and Jones and loved their jacket (after returning Wested and US Wings). Again, it's not so much knocking those companies as much as me ordering, getting the jacket and learning what I really should be looking for and asking for.

Good luck brother!

None of my Raiders jackets have the flying squirrel issue. Not sure about the cowhide question as my Indy jackets from Wested in both brown goat and cowhide look brown. The off the rack Wested Raiders jacket fits like a normal jacket with the sleeves being slightly longer.

Funny thing is a few years back, I bought a black cowhide Raiders from Wested as I wanted one to wear with my small collection of various shades of grey fedoras.

Glenville86, I have a quick question. You said that the raiders fits normal and has slightly longer sleeves. I assumed that the raiders would have shorter sleeves than an LC in the same measurements since Westeds blog says that the shoulders are smaller in the Raiders.

I ordered a custom LC and it was a disaster. WAY to small in the chest (mainly because my chest measures 45.5" and I brilliantly decided to order a 44 ](*,) ) and it rode up above my belt in the front and I couldn't even use the had warmer pockets since it was so short.

Any way, the sleeves were the only part of the jacket that were close. 26.5" and it sat right at the first knuckle of my thumb. Now, I am having it remade into a Raiders, and I want to leave some room for the sleeves to wrinkle and not be too short. I was thinking of adding 1" to the sleeves, since Wested says the shoulders in the raiders are smaller. Is that a mistake?

They are also telling me that they recommend I order a 46 (which makes logical sense, since my chest is 45.5"). I have read a lot of posts saying that with Wested you need to order at least a size up, maybe two, if you don't want it to be too small. I am thinking of ordering a 48 this time around.

Any advice?

I found the OTR LC and Raiders to have the same sleeve and overall length. For me in a size 50, I can get the normal 27 inch sleeve length which puts the sleeves about Indy length which means they could actually from wearing shorten some and still be plenty long. I wear a 48L suit and the Wested size 50 is a good fit for me as I don't like a snug jacket. The one size up is also not baggy on me but fits like a normal outerwear jacket.

I have two Indy jackets and I am happy with both. I did have to rrturn one for a larger size, but the comlany was very responsive and cooperative. My other jacket I bought from someone else and I got lucky in that I thought the fit was fine. Since there are parts of your jacket you don't like, take pictures to show what is not working for you. That way, whoever you choose for your next jacket will have a clearer idea.of what you need. Good luck

I ended up going with S&J. The consensus seems to be that is really the way to go now. And everyone has been spot on thus far about the communication. Night and day vs Wested.

One. G&B goat.

Desert island jacket: an Aero goat half-belt - not an Indy.
