I can definitely see why some believed it was brown at one point. When I first saw Raiders on VHS back in '82, I thought it was the same hat. :TOH:

To me, the hat looks grey without a slightly purple tint. :TOH:

I'm positive it's grey and not gray. HJ is a British hatmaker after all. ;)

It just smells worse, now. :CR:

Seriously, though, I see how somebody might think it's brown in that shot. The gray background is a cooler gray, while the hat is a warm gray. The contrast intensifies the undertones of both.

Grayer than a 1960's trip to East Berlin.

Gray.

As in WW2 battleships.

A mix of black and white.

A passing elephant.

Our faces after 20 years in the grave.

Our bodies after 20 minutes in the grave if cremated.

[Mod edit: just keeping it clean for the kids]

in a discussion such as this, I think it would be important to discuss the coloring technique of this movie, and to drill that down some, because not only did it call the hat into question, but to some degree, the jacket, pants, boot color and shirt as well. This would be foundational to a subject such as this, as to why the movie was colored differently and what "throwback" type technique was used.

Also, depending upon the source of the still pic, color might vary. I notice a significant difference for example, between the DVD and Blu-ray releases. And I've seen multiple sources for the same still look completely different.

Read some pretty heated reviews of the BluRay box set on Amazon. In short, the reviewers argued that Raiders was altered from its original color palette for the BR release in order to make it look more "modern" and that the DVD was closer to the original film. I have no idea if this is true or not, but it does happen with films more frequently than you would think. Also, lighting and film stock, of course, change how things look on film, not to mention the fact that ALL films go through color correction, typically overseen by the director, before being released. Point being figuring out what color a particular item of clothing was isn't as easy as matching what you see on your TV screen. Then the question becomes do you want a hat (for example) that matches the one Ford wore on the set, or one that matches the way it looks on screen? Which screen? Etc.

Lighting. Since the suit was navy blue, it follows that the hat would have most likely been gray with a black band, color scheme is wardrobe 101: dark blue/gray/black. Brown follows the earth tone palate.

I would go for what it looked like on-screen since that is what we saw. So.etimes the actual color on set just looks plain strange in real life...

Haven't we lost enough lives with the last debate? Too many widows and orphans cry out to me to learn from history and just agree different monitors are the real blame. I stand with peace and will not take sides and just pray... [-o<

Please see the Herbert Johnson brochure thread. In it you will see that Jack at HJ is hoping to find an original Clipper in their warehouse. If so, that should resolve the debate to some satisfaction. Hopefully he'll be able to locate it.

If you wore a gray hat into the woods and no one was around, would it still be gray..? :-k

Talk about color correcting! Take another look at Texan Scott's photos that he posted just a few posts above with the two shots of Indy on the plane. In the first shot, notice how white his shirt is, very bright white and the hat definitely looks grey. Now take another look at it in the second shot...it's ivory or even light tan!! Thus, the lighter colored grey hat now has a tint of brownish to it...

That's why we can't really trust the film or the monitors. They do some funky things with that color!!

Not only that, but you shouldn't board a Pan Am flight to Nepal with a Nazi agent looking over your shoulder... :[

Gray can be made as follows:
•Black and white
•Red and green
•Yellow and purple
•Blue and orange
•Red, yellow, and blue

In certain lighting, you can see how it would be possible for shades to be exposed. Some shades of gray can look taupe when exposed to the light. Indian Bones is next to the window, hence natural light, and could it be that the natural light brings out earth tones easier, the earthier shade of gray?
