Leather care for Indy-ish travel bag

Post by ijq8 »

Fellow gear heads,
I picked up this travel bag at an Afghan bazaar, not b/c I needed it, but I thought it was cool and the vendor gave me "a special price just for me" (yeah, sure). Anyway, the vendor said it was cowhide, but I'm not so sure. I'm thinking it's naturally dyed goat skin based on a google search and finding almost exactly the same bag on a European fair trade boutique website--same maker, perhaps?

Any thoughts? I'm also wondering if you have any suggestions on care and conditioning (which is why I put it in this topic space). I'm pretty sure this leather will darken and soften with age, so I'm not too concerned w/ a product that will make it darker.

Finally, I'm not super thrilled about that id tag holder on the front pocket--I'm considering unstitching it, but concerned it will leave a mark. If there is a mark, any ideas on how to cover it, perhaps some cooler leather patch logo?

Thanks in advance for the tips!
