Need advice buying my first Indy Jacket

Post by Jones-Solo »

I am new to all of this and have read a lot of info about most of the different jackets out there and need some advice. I am on a budget so I think that alone eliminates the some of the more expensive brands. Right now the Todd jackets are out and can't find a Nowak even if I could afford one and found some nice US wings at good price on ebay but per call to the company I am afraid they are to big. I like the price and the fact I could get one custom made from Wested but I have read stories good and bad about that and their quality. I am considering a Raiders custom or Hero or LC in lambskin or goatskin. I am afraid the goat might be to dark though, and not sure which one would fit me the best. I am 5'8'' 215 lbs waist size is 38 and my chest is a 46 and per friend measuring me if we did it right a 25 to 25.5 sleeve and my back would be 22.5 to 23, which is the shortest they make any jacket. my should measurement is 7.5 to 8. Wested has not been that helpful on which jacket would be best for my size and just refers me to their sections on web page, since I am on a budget, I need to make a good choice since don't have money to buy a second jacket and would loss money on a return on a custom jacket with them due to the size I need. I not sure about the sizes some on here have said their jackets didn't fit even after following Wested's guide to fitting. Wested also have a clearance LC jacket that the size measurments seem to fit me for great price in dark brown novapelle but if it didn't fit not sure if I could return it, plus if they lambskin holds up ok I think I would rather had it because its screen accurate. I am sorry this is so long but I have several issues to consider and would love advice and input from everyone since you all seem so knowledgeable. Also I tried to get info on the Steele and Jones jackets as far as price and if they do custom fits but nothing much on their website. Again Thanks everyone.

Have you sent us an email???

Our website works only as a presentation of what we do. For more info you must contact us by email.

A 23" back lenght with 5'8" height could be slightly too short.
I need much more info to give you the measurements that works for you. Specially with the chest/waist proportions.
ALL OUR JACKETS ARE CUSTOM

Try to contact us to:
pedidos@steele-jones.com.ar

Cheers.-

I can honestly say (no bs) that I LOVE my S&J jacket! I bought Wested and returned and bought US Wings and returned as well.

Not saying ANYTHING is wrong with either fine establishments or products just did not work for me. I was hesitant to order the jacket from overseas again but I cannot be happier with the results and the customer service as well.

Lots of luck! :TOH:

Same here. I have tried USW and Wested. I did keep my standard Wested in goat (I love that jacket and fit!) but I had to return the lamb. I also returned the USW as well. Just not the best fit for me.

I then ordered the custom from Steele and Jones and it fits perfect and I love the ribby Merino lambskin!

So, sometimes it's hit and miss when you order clothing online. You do have to be prepared to return some stuff if it doesn't fit right.

I've owned a lot of Indy jackets, from every maker except Nowak. Just to echo what's above, all my US Wings I've either resold or sent back, and Wested jackets have been hit and miss for me (though I've kept them). You absolutely cannot go wrong with Steele & Jones, they will make you exactly what you want and how you want it. The sole issue with them can be the wait time, which varies. If you want a jacket sooner, you might just take the plunge with Wested, though with your measurements that you listed it might be hard to resell a jacket like that.
