Thanks for sharing these photos John! I don't remember seeing them when I visited your workshop a few years ago. I'm glad that your infamy reaches into so many circles! Do you still carry a tape measure everywhere you go?

Yes, the celebrity count is cranking up in the last couple years. I do carry a tape measure with me due to James Hong.

Here's the add

I could post so many photos, as Michael has 5 hats of mine and lives in them. He a great guy and I love his work.

I have gotten several request for celebs signatures and I would love to say yes to each and everyone but I can't. it's not appropriate to do so please don't ask me. I hate saying no. I like to continue sharing all this with you and this is the exact reason why I haven't done so earlier.

BO brings up a good point so please be reminded of the following
All,

We are fortunate to have among the members in this community those who have professional and/or personal associations with people we may consider to be “celebrities”. Our community benefits from these ties to the industry we pay homage to. As much as it is exciting to us all, it is not appropriate to solicit favors such as requests for autographs, introductions, or other intrusions into these relationships.

We as a community have worked very hard to become a respected resource to not only the fans but also to the people who make the movies we love. This was greatly in evidence in the making of Crystal Skull, and we were honored to be a part in each way we were utilized. We worked with members of the production staff as professionals and we respected the appropriate boundaries. We would like our membership to use the same respect for boundaries. Jamming up messages boxes to those members who have those contacts is not a proper way to conduct ourselves when establishing/maintaining trusted connections. It would be a shame to endanger the relationship with an abundance of frivolous requests that can't possibly all be filled.

Just an FYI, I'm currently booked up to December. It would be a good idea if you want a hat for x-mas or to give a gift for X-mas, now would be a good idea to order now. The other option you could do is to buy a gift certificate and let that special someone pick out their own hat.

If you mean your post that was made in Vendor Announcements, you know that section is reserved for COW members of Vendor status so it was removed per site rules.

If you mean the thread that was in the Crescent Moon Emporium, that thread was the announcement about the pre-orders for the Everymen hat and you indicated all pre-orders had been filled so it was removed.

If you would like to start a new threads offering the Everymen in either the Indy or non-Indy styles, feel free to post in the Crescent Moon Emporium.

Can I ask why John hasn't been given "Vendor status"?

Since he's clearly a vendor, and one of the largest out there in the hobby this forum is all about?
What happened?

Bit baffling that..... :-k

I'm fairly certain I've seen John's posts in the vendor section before. Was his vendor status revoked?

I'm confused? John, have you stopped selling hats? Are you advertising someone else's hats? This is has me more upside down than my thoughts on brown and gray hats.

Yeah eh?

I'm asking for these reasons....I'd seen John was a vendor here (rightly so, of course..), but to hear he's not? Anymore? I'm a little more than interested about why that would be the case..I'm sure John is still selling hats...Hence the question...

I'm interested to know why he's no longer a vendor here..

Hopefully we'll have an official announcement soon? :?

Me too.
John is more than friendly and helpful and quite frankly the ONLY regular vendor still active on this site. I mean he offers help to anyone with a question or need. Sorry but all other vendors are not on here as regular.

I also would like to know why the vendor status has changed.

Seems to me if John does become the Indy V guy, we should be so lucky to have him as a regular contributing vendor here.

With the that the conversation about him losing his status needs to be done through PM's to John.

OK, got my run in, have a fresh cup of coffee....

This thread was temporarily locked because the conversation was skewing far away from the intent of Penman hat adoration. Most of the mods/admins live on US Eastern Time so were already in or on their way to night-night land. We've seen how these discussions can go south real quick during sleeping hours.

Whereas most of the COW mods/admins are dreaming of sugar plums dancing, being on the other side of the planet I'm just starting my day.

Please see the link Tennessee Smith provided.
To sum up, BO's status as a Vendor on this site was revoked back in March due to his violation of the membership rules of Club Obi Wan. Nothing has ever been said about his customer service or implied that he failed to deliver on an order. It bares repeating, BO had been suspended and his vendor status revoked because he failed to follow the membership rules of this site.

BO is still otherwise a member of the site. And as a member he can post items for sale in either the Cairo Bazaar (generally reserved for 'one off' sales) or the Crescent Moon Emporium (created for sales 'runs').

The Vendor Announcements sections is reserved for members of Vendor status to post.

Let's keep in mind membership here is voluntary. No one is forced to log in to discuss the clothes worn by a fictional movie character. At any time a member can request to have her/his account deactivated.

Now, let's get back to the topic at hand for this thread. As Texas Scott said, "Post 'em up!"

Posting this 2x

Nicely played. By saying "I did nothing wrong", any rebuke by a staff member looks like an attack. But there have been multiple suspensions for you antagonizing members and staffers. The last being on a staff member about a tidbit that you stated hurt your business by posting it...even though he was recycling information you posted prior. This line of discussion needs to end as well as the lies you've spread about the Admin and Mods here.

Obviously a few threads related to Penman have been locked (again).

Frankly there is much going on behind the scenes concerning BO's behavior and baseless accusations he is making about the volunteer moderators and administrators of Club Obi Wan.

Since it is the weekend and many of the Mods/Admins are otherwise unavailable we are going to take a few days to have the entire staff involved in discussions about next steps.

At this point any new threads started concerning Penman will be deleted without comment. We ask for a few days to be deliberate in our decision making and by starting more new threads asking "What's going on?" or complaining will do nothing to help the situation.

We are reopening this thread to allow for members to continue to post and discuss their fedoras. You know, "Come for the gear..." and all that. :TOH:

Per COW rules, discussions of banned members is not permitted. We realize it's a fine line we are trying to walk here in separating out the high quality Penman fedoras from the individual of John Penman.

Posts in the vein of "poor John" will be deleted without comment as they do not contribute to the topic of this thread. Also, posts that are essentially sales ads for Penman products will be deleted for the same reason.

Was in Portland visiting family, so I drove out to Hillsboro to visit Penman at his show room and pick up my Everyman hat in person. John showed me a bunch of his blocks and various hat models and took my measurements using a really cool head sizing device in case I want to go custom one day. Anyone in the Portland or even Seattle area, it is worth the trip, just call him to make an appointment.

The Everyman Indy is essentially the same hat as the AB Henry and a nice step up from my Akubra Federation. I'll post a review when I get a chance.

Okay, as promised, here's a quick review with some photos. Ordered this several months back and requested the Raiders bash, but then reconsidered and asked for an LC. Very happy with the results. I've adjusted the crease to my liking, somewhere between a Temple and LC. As I've said, I picked this up from John in person and had a really good experience hanging out with him in his shop.

The hat is definitely the best factory hat I've ever handled. It is sad that Stetson and Borsalino are not able to produce hats like this anymore. The 80/20 rabbit/beaver blend is very nice, a bit stiff at first, but once you handle it and wear it some, it softens up nicely. Great feel and finish to the felt, and seems very stable. Color is a little darker than you see in my photos, and a bit too dark for my own perception of SA, but it will probably lighten up with time. The ribbon is nice, exactly what you'd expect from Penman. The bow-work and tacking is excellent. The bow knot is a bit narrower than SA, save maybe the flying wing scene. But, it is so nicely done, I don't care. The leather sweat is a bit orange in color, and a little thicker than I prefer. The only marking is the "Everyman Hat" logo and text. Liner is sewed in, plain white.

The hat appears exactly the same as the AB Henry, but with a different sweatband. I prefer the AB Henry sweatband based on what I've seen posted here, but I'm very happy that John is offering these hats again.

I would say don't hesitate with picking one of these up. It's as nice a hat as one would need, and a nice alternative to going custom. I really regret not picking up a Henry when John first started carrying them, but this is a nice consolation prize. The name "Adventurebilt Henry" is all kinds of classy, while "Everyman Hats" doesn't quite have the same ring. Same exact hat, though, except for the sweatband. John said he couldn't reveal where these are made, but a little investigative research of my own, and I was able to figure it out. Not going to say though... :#: :- Let's just say, these are nicely made hats from a very experienced company and the price Penman is selling them for is pretty reasonable.

John is offering a granite grey fedora from the Everyman line. I'm tempted to pick one up and turn that into a Bogart Maltese Falcon hat.

As to the crease and pinch on my hat above, I popped out the somewhat tighter LC pinch John had put in, gave the hat a very slight turn, reshaped it in the style of the LC Motorcycle Crossing hat, but with a looser Temple pinch. So maybe it's a Raiders of the Last Temple hat!

Some go for the quality, some go for the name, I go for both, but I really did not liked the Everyman sweatband  , the logo looks to me a little bit child like design, while the AB writing is more elegant, but, it's practically the same hat, sweatband can be changed later. Thanks for the pics I was looking forward for a Beaver LC someday but the Everyman seems a reasonable price-quality choice.
