My favorite LC hat. The MC hat
So, after much trial and error I finally got it right... And I knew what I had to do to get there... CUT THE BRIM!!
This is by far my favorite LC hat. The motorcycle chase hat. To me this is the most interesting hat and I would call it the ''streets of cairo'' hat of LC.
There is just so much going on with the hat. The taller crown. The brim swoop, Loose pinch. the two different dents and yes, the short brim. I love it.
I hope you like! Opinions are welcome
This is an obsession dad.
Alittle smirk on the MC.
Its based on this.

Well done Holt.
Did you lay the brim flat and cut or just trim by eye on the fly?

What did the measurements of the brim turn out to be? Just curious. Looks great!

Re: My favorite LC hat. The MC hat
Imo, the hat Ford's wearing during the actual chase is not the same fedora he's wearing once the Chase has ended and Indy's arguing with Sr. Look closely at the top of the front pinch of the MC hat. It doesn't appear to me that the center dent is bashed as deeply in the front as it is in the hat he's wearing during the argument over returning to Berlin. The MC fedora is also the hat I think he's wearing in all those shots by Terry O'neil. I'm convinced of this because that scene( mc)was shot some time later after original filming had wrapped. You can see that Ford and Connery's hair is longer in the scene as well. During the argument, their hair is shorter imo.

Ok, wasn't sure you were aware or not. In one of your pics you're pointing your finger as if you were having a mock argument with Dad.

Btw, if I'm not mistaken it looks as if there were more than one hat used for the 'mc' scene. It could be that Ford or someone else just gave the front a little tighter pinch and it's just the same hat, but to me it looks bashed different near the end of the chase when Sr. Is giving Jr. The stink eye.
Re: My favorite LC hat. The MC hat
Yup! either tighter pinch or a swap.

So is the MC fedora the same hat Ford's wearing in all those promo photos by the tree I wonder?

To me the (TP) hat brim looks like it has the same cut as the MC. Sure it's not bashed in the same fashion but it could've just lost its shape with wear. Are you certain of this or is it just your opinion?Jeremiah wrote:No. That would be the TP hat. (Tree pose)

Oh, cool that you make your hats. I have a S&J Herbert Johnson replica that I've already trimmed the brim on to emulate the Grail Temple hat but I think I can get the MC look if I rearrange the bash.Holt wrote:One of my custom beaver hats

WOW...
Just... Amazing
You sure do know your stuff, Holt!
Few people ever notice the details and nuances of an Indy hat (especially the LC Hat) like YOU do!
(and as usual, my friend, the Highest Compliment I can pay to is that as soon as I saw this hat on your noggin, all I could think was "I WANT THAT HAT!!!")
GREAT job, buddy!

Re: My favorite LC hat. The MC hat
Well I tried to bash my S&J '38 into the MC fashion and no matter how I shaped the dents, top and sides, I just never seemed to be able to capture what I saw on screen and caps. THEN, I finally noticed what it was that I was missing: The MC hat is TURNED!!! So I knocked the dents out, wet it slightly, then placed it on my head and rotated it in the opposite direction that the Raiders hat is famous for, resting it where the ribbons middle/knot sits BEHIND the left ear. Once I'd done this, the brim began to take on the warped appearance on the sides and rear of what I'd seen on screen. Also when I put the left side dent in, it stopped just short of where the bow begins. I really think this bash is the quid essential LC bash and I'm happier now than I was when I first got my hat ,bashed VP style, in December!!!
Re: My favorite LC hat. The MC hat
I don't think the LC hat is turned. The Bow edge rests just about infront of his left ear. which is pretty normal.

Ok boys, lets take a step back, take a deep breath and try this again...
without the name calling and without the attitudes...
With all the bad going on in the world right now, we don't need petty disagreements over a hat
turning into vicious arguments...
Now back your corners, come out and shake hands, and try it again...
And anindyjones, if you need a hand posting pictures, just ask.
You first need someplace to host the images (flicker, photbucket, etc...)

Re: My favorite LC hat. The MC hat
Yes, I agree.
I was following this thread when it got "heated" and was seeing the two main posters that were 'discussing' the hat.
I will just say this, If you are here it's because we all have something in common-a more than normal affection for these movies & characters...so much that we want to emulate the attire....some of us so much we may want to actually be that character in the movie.
My opinion is that we are all novices here trying to gain more knowledge and love for our beloved movie/character and it is discouraging to see one person condescend another; I mean this is not even face to face communication/interaction.
If you love this stuff treat others with affection of wanting to see their enjoyment increase not decrease.

Re: My favorite LC hat. The MC hat
I've been apart of this forum for years and have never heard of the LC hat ever having the "turn".
The LC hat has always seemed to me to have all the characteristics of a more or less standard fedora without the uniqueness of the Raider's Turn. Any LC hat I've ever seen has reflected this. I'm by no means an expert but I've not heard of this from any of the major hat makers that ARE experts, some have seen actual screen used hats.
Even many members that ordered THE hat from THE hat maker (when HJ was more consistent) said it arrived looking exactly like the Venice Pier scene hat and HJ would not have a turn in their standard hats.
Here's a good website to see screen caps.
http://movie-screencaps.com/indiana-jon ... e-1989/78/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The bow sits almost always over his left ear, the brim doesn't have the swoop or bend that a hat with a "turn" normal would have. The sides of the hat are both uniformly shaped which a turn would not give.... atleast not with my eyes. Again, this is all JMO.

Re: My favorite LC hat. The MC hat
First:
Holt, that hat looks spot on. Amazing achievement. Congrats!
The ToD hat was turned!!! Not the entire movie, but in a couple of scenes.
Same thing could happened with the LC hat.
I haven't checked the screen caps.
But, no need to. Because my point is, the LC hat wasn't turn in the whole movie, but maybe, for a bunch of possible reasons, could be turned in some scene.
To be an expert in hats or not, have nothing to do with this.
It have to do with how the hat was worn in that particular scene.
And the turn not always results on a pronounced brim swoop, depends on sizing, head shape, felt softness, sweatband, etc.
Cheers.-

Funny because I recently watched them again with my kids and I swear I saw screens with a seemingly turned hat. Very briefly mind you but I now know I was not seeing things. Ha.

I agree. It's stupid. All of the bad in the world and we argue over a freakin bow. I'm ashamed.
Also, I as a staff member of COW should know better. I would like to offer my public apology to anindyjones for some of the tings that was said from my keyboard.
Next round is on me

Holt,
Apology accepted. And let me say that I'm also sorry for the name calling on my behalf. Btw, hen I said Indy's hat was "turned" I guess I was confusing terms. I meant that the hat was just turned/wedged on his head to keep it from coming off during the scene. Anyway, I hope all is right again here in Indygearland.

Re: My favorite LC hat. The MC hat
When I originally said the MC fedora was "turned" I didn't realize exactly what sort of a can of worms I was opening. What I meant to say was that the hat was rotated on Ford's head which in several screencaps is obvious. I don't think the hat is "turned" in the way folks around here understand the word. However, I will go on record as saying that one of the Grail Temple hats certainly has a slight "turn".backstagejack wrote:I've been apart of this forum for years and have never heard of the LC hat ever having the "turn".
