Hey all had some time and it's been awhile, that and though it's December, the weather was nice to take some current pic's of my ABL.

Love these two shots. Shows how the ribbon looks like two different colors. One being almost mistaken for black and the other is a mid brown.

Nice pictures. They really show how the lightweight felt the ABL is made of develops amazing character over a relatively short time.

Mine is a couple of months younger and wasn't worn as much early on, but it's well on it's way and is my go to hat most of the time now. :TOH:

As something of a field test report I was out in a Death Valley yesterday wearing one of these. A fairly good breeze came up and while the canvas/Tiley hat owners set off running across the salt flats chasing theirs, mine stayed put. The brim just flipped up and wrapped around the crown. When the wind subsided it went right back where it came from. No staples needed. ;)

Ridgerunner58 wrote:The felt is not really the limiting. Issue on being able to fold or roll a hat for travel. (Other than obviously western hats with 40 lbs of stiffener in them). The limitation is the sweatband.

Akubras have a wire reed in the sweatband that will kink if you fold the hat. Penman, Adventurebilt and Garrison (I think) use a sweatband with a nylon reed. So DO NOT roll up a Fed IV. You'll wreck the sweatband. As long as the sweatband can take it, however, and provided the felt doesn't have so much stiffener that it will break, it should pack okay.

Additionally if you pack a good fedora for travel (which I do a lot) consider buying a shoe bag to contain the rolled hat. It protects the hat and holds it in rolled condition. :TOH:

Don't know how I missed this one. Thanks for answering this for me my PR guy. ;-)

You are correct about the reed but also to remember the other thing besides the felt and the sweatband being used but how the felt is treated and most important the thread being used sewing in all the parts ie:sweatband, ribbon and liner. I use special made thread that will not break without a sharp object to cut it. It will also not rott with water or sweat. I was told by several Hatters it's over kill. Why do I do it you might ask, it's just one small part that makes a Penman hat special and that I will go the extra mile to provide a better quality hat for my customers.

Looks great. Sadly my AB legacy has tapered so bad I don't wear it anymore.
Need to send it in for an overhaul.

Hi all, my wife and I took the day to Newburyport Ma, for a day of just walking around. In the wind, wore my ABL and stayed on fine. Beautiful town.

We then took a drive up to Hampton for some more walking, this time on the beach and board walk. Now remember the day, hurricane Hermie has been stalled near NY but it was very windy on the beach and the board walk. Hat stayed on like a champ, had to take it off for awhile not for fear, but it was so windy the brim was plastered to my face.

When we were walking along the board walk, a gentle man came up and asked how my hat was staying on, glue? :-k
Had a nice chuckle and told him a combination of the rabbit felt and a properly fitted hat. He liked it very much, nice guy. It was nice because it wasn't some crazy question, but one of curiosity.
Here's a shot the misses took for me.

John the hat is holding fine and it's one of my go to hats.

Thanks guys, it is my go to, hate to say I baby it, but I try not to wear it when there's going to be a down pour, light rain is ok.

I took some more but haven't had the time to down load them.

I hear ya. I baby my AB now and probably will my penman raiders. I just scored that Akubra so that is now my rain hat. But I don't get too worried with the AB. The thing is a tank.

Here we go!

Got the new ABL in the mail today, and I'm thrilled by the results. This is a phenomenally constructed hat and, pulls off the Raiders look quite well - straight sides with maybe a hint of reverse taper. Here are some photos snapped with my BK Relic Hunter in striated lamb...and a t-shirt inspired by a certain scene from cinema history...

Beat me to it. ;) Thanks all! The workmanship is incredible, and this has got to be some of the best rabbit felt I’ve ever touched. The only problem is the size. I must not have measured well enough, because it’s about a half or a whole centimeter too big. I’m thinking about using the lamp shade trick to tighten the sweat a bit. What do you guys think? I’m hesitant to send it back to John for resizing, since the size difference is so small, and I really don’t want to go without it for however long it would take, but at the same time it is a little big.
Indiana Mouse! I also have the T-shirt!
Lol, love it! Only on COW would I immediately find 2 other people with the same custom printed Indy shirt...

I did not send to John. I had Brian aka screencapped have a go since it would have been awhile to get to John. I think it needs some stiffner. But color is amazing.
