Leather Skins

Post by knibs7 »

Ok so two questions: Where would I go to find a certain leather for a jacket? and Would it be possible to send this leather to a jacket maker and have them make the jacket from said leather?

Leather Skins

Ive inquired with leather workers about jackets. Most that don't do jackets are apprehensive but I would imagine a jacket maker might take you up on. It might be tricky finding leather that you don't have to purchase in bulk. That's why when a friend was tossing an old sofa, I cut all the leather off. I'm gonna try a holster when I get around to it.

I remember that at least one person has done this since I've been here. Try Magnoli or Wested.

Not sure about where to source the leather though. :TOH:

There is a bunch of places online. Most sell by the foot, so you need to determine how much leather you will need first. Also, the type of leather you are after will determine both price and size of the hide needed.

For a jacket, you need 8 leather skins, size 75cm-59cm(i'm 1,80m-78kg),i have already worked with Wested ,sended my own batch of leather skins, bought on a leather skins shop on Ebay "Occitannacuir" and also bought directly to a french tannery "Mr Christophe Barthas"also have a Ebay shop(less expensive way..) ,and Wested made to me some Indy jacket,4 exactly..
Unfortunately,Occitanna didn't have some batch ,color, quality enough to make a nice Indy jacket, leather to thin,or not the good brown color..
The tickness of lambskin must be 0,8-0,9 mm.
You have to ask Wested if it always possible before ship the batch..
A good quality lambskin, like aniline plonge or "waxy mountain" was about 35€ /one skin.So a batch cost approximately 350€..

Example of a Temple jacket made with Occitanna aniline plonge lambskins and made by Wested :

I have also sent leather into wested in the past... For size 40-44 you will need about 44 sq ft of hide. For Indy jackets stick with garment weight leathers 2.5oz or less.
