You never know.... send them a few pics with some specs and see what happens.... or try Magnoli? He might be more willing to try an experiment like that. After all he produces the Utah Jacket modeled after the character "Fedora" who inspired Indy.

Just a few final things about my stuff that I thought I should add, folks…

I realized after posting those photos last week that I forgot to thank another of our Members here; Canyon, for alerting me about this conversation (and about my missing Steranko-style photos) in the first place.
Like I said before, I’d been doing a lousy job of checking in more often and so I didn’t realize that Thread had come back to life… I also didn’t know that my Steranko pieces were no longer showing and I had no idea that any of you were wondering if that was even me…
But Canyon dropped me a line through Facebook a couple of weeks ago to ‘wise me up’ and I took it as the opportunity I needed to try and get a bit more involved again with this great community
So, THANKS again, Canyon!

Next thing is that another friend who’s a friend HERE at C.O.W. as well as through Facebook sent me a message last week asking if I’d meant to actually post the original shots here as well (he was also kind enough to say that he “ALSO always liked the actual beach background for the ‘Sand Dune’ shot as well”)
So, I’m not sure if anyone else was curious about those…but I guess in the interest of showing the process involved with this project (by seeing what we started with), HERE they are:

“Sand Dune Indy” Base shot

An interesting note about this photo; it’s actually an amalgam of two different shots:
I had probably 20 photos taken of me in that pose that day – all within only a minute or so.
I’d position my face, my arms, my free hand and my ‘whip hand’ a little differently each time. When I finally chose the shot I liked best (matched the Steranko piece Best) it still had 2 problems with it:
One was that my right hand was casting a shadow over my leg that gave the illusion of a weird kinda’ lump … and the other was that my left hand was pulled back and up a bit too much and as a result the whip was held much higher than I would have preferred
Of course, some of the other shots didn’t have that shadow on my leg (and did have my arm holding the whip lower)…
So thankfully, another friend of mine blended the elements from the two photos together to make the picture above.

“Snake Tomb Indy” Base shot

The only thing I can really say about this shot is that the awkwardness I was willing to attempt (with the uncomfortable pose and the positioning –and grimacing- I was doing with my face) was a real moment of clarity for Me about just how far I was willing to go to try and get this shot to work! LOL

And FINALLY…
That same friend who made me the hybrid ‘Sand Dune’ shot ALSO took those larger Original files and revisited the project to put their own spin on it… Even going so far as to lift other elements from the Original (making little adjustments like tweaking the color of my shirt and even blending the drape of the jacket in the painting into the photo)

Here’s THAT shot…

For Me, this is as close as I ever could’ve hoped to have gotten with mimicking Steranko’s incredible Original image

Funny- when I first looked at this post, I just skimmed through it on my phone, not paying too close attention to it. It wasn't until giving it a second read a few hours later that I realized this pic WASN'T entirely Steranko art. You nailed it!

That’s actually an old Stetson ‘Stetsonian’ that I got waaay back in the early-to-mid 90’s

Not at all a spot-on Indy hat (or a perfect ‘Steranko Indy’ hat), but definitely a lid that might’ve been true of what fellas were wearing back in the era that I was trying to capture with this shot (and like I said, I was doing my best to put together the outfit using as few pieces of my existing Indy gear as possible)

Actually here’s a couple of shots of me wearing that one 8 or 9 years back, just to give you a better look at it
(“WOW… was my beard really THAT dark back then?” asked the rapidly greying man)

(Hmmm... and I think I might be giving it my Best channeling of “Tom Selleck’s INDY” in that bottom right corner shot)

The truth is, if I had been buying a hat new off the rack for that photograph I’d have probably bought something with a slightly smaller brim than the Stetson (maybe more like Penman’s amazing “Marlo” hat) …
but in the pinch to get the shot that day, I think the Stetson did the trick!

Again....perfect choice for this project

! Kinda thought it might be a Stetson, but truly wasn't sure. Minus the (piped edges), it somewhat reminds me of the 'Wildcatter' Stetson produced in the '80's (and, it was charcoal in color).....well, the shape and style were much like this

but it bugs me to say that it wasn't until I'd packed up and gotten back home before I realized the the double magazine pouch can't actually be SEEN in any of the shots
...the bottom of the jacket hung down over it and completely concealed it

Here's a shot of the one I used that day, though

I've been looking at the Steranko artwork and think the mag pouch was canvas instead of leather. If you compare the leather jacket, Sam Brown strap, leather pants belt and leather holster, none of them match the mag pouch in the artwork. Maybe I'm biased since my mag pouch is canvas with a snap fastener that snaps to the web pistol belt.

I tossed in a pic of the Banana Republic jacket with the barrel sleeves and similar collar.

I remember when I was putting my gear together for this look, I originally hoped to find something more like an olive green canvas mag pouch...
But I just couldn't manage it, so I went with what I could find that did seem to have the correct look.

With that said, though (and with that sweet mag pouch and jacket in your possession), why don't you start putting together something similar?

I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking that this thread would certainly welcome some other Steranko outfits from our talented members here at C.O.W.

Forgive me if this was mentioned above, but of the 4 (?) concept drawings, two of them always reminded me of Sylvester Stallone.

Personally, I would put the famous gas bag back, because although the cross strap looks like a sam brown. it does not seem to match ether belt Indy is actually wearing in the painting- at least function-wise. He is using a canvas pistol belt, and if he is wearing a sam brown- which is also an equipment holding belt- he is using it to hold up his pants, which seems be be over-kill, unless he keeps a LOT of stuff in his trouser pockets.

Just wanted to update all of you with this little story…
(and share my excitement)

As all of you who have visited or posted here on this thread already know, it’s been a couple of years since I did this little project where I attempted to recreate the look of Indiana Jones as he originally appeared in JIM STERANKO’s legendary Pre-Production concept paintings

Well, last week I saw an unexpected padded envelope in my mailbox…
I brought it home, opened it and was kinda’sorta’ flabbergasted to read the following from our own wonderful twilekjedi…

“Hi there! I was admiring your Steranko Indy costume pics and then realized that Mr. Steranko was going to be at DragonCon, so I hope you don’t mind but I took the liberty to print out your photoshopped image and brought it to him for him to see and sign.
He was really impressed especially by your posture and expression in recreating the look. He said to tell you he sends his regards!”

Allow me to once again say a heartfelt THANK YOU for this wonderful gift, twilekjedi

I’m so very flattered that you would do that for me and I’m so humbled by your generosity and thoughtfulness!
