Newbie Questions about gear

Post by ritnecrowin »

Hello all,
I spent a decade wearing a pretty awesome Frodo Baggins outfit on Halloween and after a lot of grief from family/friends I decided it was time for a new costume...enter Indy... but as I delve further into this, I find myself making justifications to buy SA accurate gear that I can use all year.

So far, I picked up a nice Eddie Bauer Fedora, a repo Webly .38 holster and a US Wings antique lambskin Raiders jacket...

I'd like to get as SA to Raiders as I can while remaining as budget friendly as possible...
I'm leaning towarda getting the shirt from WPG but not sure where to get the pants...reccomendations?
Also, does anyone know if Todds will get more boots? Or should I be looking elsewhere?

Thanks!

WPG is good for a raiders shirt, lots of reviews on it are positive.

BEst raiders jacket for the cheapest buck is the Wested Hero jacket (http://www.wested.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) around ($300 or so?)

Wested also sells the shirt, I'm not too clear on the look Raiders or LC..... there's probably a review somewhere. Todd's had the shirt at one point but I'm not sure if he still does.

Pants are tough. Todd's were great but he doesn't sell them anymore. Wested has some that are okay, but more LC instead of Raiders. WPG sells some but those reviews are spotty I think on look. Lots of guys find close enough at a goodwill or something.

Magnoli is great, spot on and pure quality but more expensive.

Shoes, nope. Todd probably won't get anymore. Again, aside from real Alden's or Magnoli your best bet is close enough. Something with a moc toe and ankle height that's brown. There's a thread in the shoe section about "close enough's" that have some good suggestions.

Akubra's Federation ($150? )is the best hat for the buck. It's tough as nails, fairly cheap and can be beaten and shaped in to a good raiders (again, lots of reviews on it on the forum. ) For a little bit more you could get a Garrison which is amazing.

Again, most people won't know at all. The average joe sees a brown fedora, a brown leather jacket, tan pants and a whip and you're basically there.

Only us gear heads would really know.

It's tough because back in '08 there were LOTS of cheaper options but they've since dried up. Todd's was the best bang for the buck on shirt, boots and pants, and to be fair any of his gear is pretty #### good.

Again, I'm trying for the economical suggestions, there's plenty of amazing replica's out there by Magnoli, Penman, etc but they aren't quick or with in a small budget.

Personally, for a quick and cheap Indy raiders impression... I'd buy anything I could from Todd's site that was from Raiders (gun belt, holster, webbed belt, Mrk VII bag, whip, maybe the shirt, I'm not sure if it was close to raiders or LC).... then I'd buy an Akubra, a Wested Hero, a WPG shirt, wested or WPG pants, close enough shoes.

WPG's prices are close to Todd's, I'm just not sure on the pants and the rest of their gear. Todd's stuff has always had pretty awesome reviews. WPG has just come out with their pants, and jackets and I haven't read too many reviews on them. I'm sure someone has bought them around here.

Welcome aboard! I saw Todd has some blemished jackets on his eBay store for $160 if you want a jacket that's more SA than the Wings. I have a Wings Legend and a Todd's and I love them both.

How about posting your Frodo costume in the Halloween section when you get a chance? Always good to see other people's work. Good luck on your Indy journey-

Jack pretty much covered it, but I'll have to prop Todd's up as the best off-the-rack Raiders jacket value. Wested's Hero is definitely the most economical way to go if you need a measured fit. Peter Botwright will be the first to claim that Todd's jacket is a knock-off of the Hero, which speaks volumes to me.

From one Raiders devotee to another, welcome to the hobby! :TOH:

About the shirt; Color wise, WPG is a pretty good option. However, I tend to disagree with the majority on the shirt's quality. I find it stiff, way too thick, with bad stitching (not inaccurate, just constantly needing repair), and oversized in the body. I'm not overly concerned with precision of color, since it's largely unattainable, so I would go with Todd's shirt.

If Todd's has pants in your size, I've seen them in person, and they are a good option. I just got the WPG pants, myself. My first pair was poorly made, but I exchanged them. The second pair was much better. Not the highest quality option, but the color, material, and texture are great. The back pockets could be closer together, but I consider that a minor issue.

As for boots, the most accurate are all expensive. But I have seen many of that style poping up in local stores. Check out Kohl's, Macy's, and J.C. Penney.

If you are ready to spend some serious cash (now or in the future), I cannot recommend Magnoli highly enough. His boots are beautiful, his clothes are all top-notch, and it's all custom, so you can pick the details that you want... or take his advice. He's knows his gear.

I second the Akubra and Garrison for the price when it comes to a good Fedora. :TOH:

The Thursdays are a very nice boot. Lighter and have better grip than Aldens.

Thanks for all of the great advice and warm welcomes!

Sadly, Todds looks to be sold out of pants and shirts all together...

I think for now, I'm going to grab the shirt from WPG and save up for Mignolia pants.

I already bought the USW jacket and it's been tailored...so I''m pretty much locked in with it :/

Agreed. I love US Wings jackets! They might not be the most accurate to Raiders available, but a great dollar-to-quality ratio.

I ended up getting a shirt and pants from WPG and the satchel and whip holder from Todds...
Also got my USW jacket back from my tailor and it fits like a dream... and I feel about 100x cooler than I am when I weat it!!!!

So now I just need a weapon belt, whip and boots..
I like the Thursdays and have an Amazon gift card but they only have 9 and 10s..I wear a 9.5...does anyone know if these run a little bigger or smaller by chance?
Also, suggestions for a weapons belt? (Todds is out of stock and I need a 40-42)

I gt my gun belt from makeitjones, It's top notch imo.

I'm not a fan of the whip holder I got with it, the whip rolls around and uncoils but that could also me not knowing how to attach them and or col it properly.

I'd have gotten the holster from him as well but have yet to be able to afford it thanks to daycare costs

my whip is from todds, 10ft and it's fine. It can crack but is stiff It 's cow hide so to be expected).

My boots are aldens and I love them

If Todd's isn't an option, I'd say try Wade Egan for belts and whip holders.

As always,
thanks for the advice! I bought a whip holder from Todds... I got it and it's a light brown (didn't expect that...is that SA to Raiders?) also, I have to idea how to attach or use it yet lol

I found this belt: https://www.etsy.com/listing/261040061/ ... ry=indiana" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; jones belt&ref=sr_gallery_1

Has anyone ever bought from them? Is it SA to Raiders?

I also picked up Thursday boots in size 9... they were out of 9.5s... I know they say true to size, but I'm hoping I can cram my feet in and they stretch a touch... thank goodness for Amazon carefree returns though.

Here's my gear so far:

I would compare the pic from that listing to the pics on the main website. If it's a close enough in your opinion and within budget, I'd grab it.

The whip holder should slid right on..
From the main site:
In Raiders, the whip holder was riveted/permanently attached to the gun belt and made of a lighter tan leather. In the other three movies, it was a separate item of a brown that matched the darker color of the gunbelt.

In Temple, it was simply slid over the gun belt. In Last Crusade and Crystal Skull, the whip holder was first slid onto the web belt, then the gun belt was slid through the whip holder. In fact, during Crystal Skull, there are photos/scenes where Indy is still carrying the whip via the whip holder, while there is no gun belt worn at the time. By running the whip holder through the web belt first, this configuration is now possible.
Not sure how accurate you want to be by riveting it to the belt. I had a raider's accurate belt and it worked well. The LC TOD style will slide around as you walk and run, though if you slid if over the web belt and the gun belt it will be stopped from sliding too far by the belt loops.

I've never bought from Todd but this is from Todd's site:
They slip over your belt, so you can wear on the right or the left. The closure is a one-way snap, a special snap that only opens from the top, so the weight of the whip will not pop it open no matter how fast you are running from angry Hovitos. But the real trick is a hidden velcro adjustment that allows you to tighten the holder to any size whip, whether long or short, thick or thin. This is enough to hold most whips in place under most conditions. The color is "Raiders" dark tan.

Please allow me to share my experience with both. The 2 belts through the holder setup forced me to constantly pull up my pants, and that was before I started toting an actual revolver. I switched to the riveted holder setup using a not-exactly-SA yet very effective Raiders-style double-wrap holder. Much less distracting when wearing gear for hours on end, and it's still uniquely Raiders. :TOH:

I will say the invention of the double wrap whip holder was a god send. I had one a few years ago when I owned a 10' whip and it was amazing.

Now that I think back on it, I have owned tons of indy gear even stuff from Noel Howard... and now I have a Mark VII bag from Noel, a Wade Egan LC strap, an Azuma LC shirt, a pre millennium Wested Raiders (clown collar and all) and some MAgnoli cotton LC pants and a carbon grey Akubra Fed. and that's it.... I've definitely slacked off and sold off these past few years....

I've got an ADHD version of an Indy outfit.

Before I had a double-wrap whip holder, I found myself ditching the whip for all but photo-ops. But now I I have a secure grip on my whip. And frankly, I like it being a free-moving loop. It makes it easy for my to adjust when I need to sit, walk, run, or show it off in a photo. It may not be 100% accurate, but I've always been a sucker for practicality!

Well, didn't they actually tie the whip together for HF as he ran around? So, I'd say a double wrap is about as accurate as that...

I just wanted to share a picture of where I'm at with my gear...
(if it's the wrong area, please let me know and I'll move it...I'm just so excited...and especially proud that I did this in about two weeks!)

Image

Coat is USW, Fedora is Eddie Bauer, Shirt is WPG, Pants are Stafford, Satchel is Todds... shoes are Thursdays.

I picked up WPG pants, but they are to small and got close enough until I lose a little more weight (which I've been doing.) I still need the weapon belt and whip :(

I know I'm not SA- but hopefully close.

Trousers are a bit green looking in these pictures, but as you mentioned you have a new pair on standby. You definitely have the vibe.

What Eddie Bauer hat is that?

I have no clue- I found it on Ebay and the seller just called it an Indiana Jones Fedora... there is nothing on the band except a VERY worn down Eddie Bauer logo.

Finished my outfit!
Went with USW jacket, Eddie Bauer Fedora (though I'm probably getting another very soon,) WPG shirt/pants, Thursday boots, Etsy Weapon Belt, Mignoli 10ft whip

I'm ALREADY getting the itch to upgrade some stuff and I haven't even worn it anywhere LOL

My company is doing a superhero themed spirit day next week...and I've convinced HR that Indy fought Nazis and dealt with mystical items...so clearly he's a superhero ;) (I'm just not allowed to bring the whip into the office ROFL)

Also, the museum near me is doing a 21+ themed event next month called "this belongs in a museum!"
They'll have a costume contest and prop boulder for pictures!

Thanks again everyone for helping me out! \:D/
