Need your expertise on a Raider of the Lost Ark jacket

Post by ChrisPappas »

I'd like to have the most accurate Raiders jacket I can and I am looking at the Wested Special Raiders 'Hero' Jacket (http://www.wested.com/special-raider...kins-512-p.asp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;).

What I'd like to know, if I were to order this, what changes should I request to make it more screen accurate? Right off the bat, I can see that the lining color is too light, and that the side straps lack the box stitching. Will the zipper pull be on the left side, or will I have to request that?

If I get a shrunken lambskin, what's the likelyhood of ending up with a crazy looking hide?

Is there anything else? Or should I be looking elsewhere?

Thanks,

Chris

Seeing how this is your first post, in case you don't know who this fellow is, Chris, he's one of our premier jacket makers, so he's legit. :TOH:

I've got a Steele and Jones Raiders on the way, thanks Diego !! Wested makes a nice jacket it all depends on your price range. Bill Kelso makes a superb jacket but extremely expensive but you get the best. Hope this helps. :TOH:

Wested's shrunken lambskin seems to be hit or miss, as each new batch appears to be quite different from the last. Not sure what the latest offering is like. Maybe someone who got one recently could chime in. Requesting a box stitch on the jacket is simple enough. The straps are too long, so request them to be about 6.5" in length. Everything else on the Wested Hero should be accurate. Lining color looks fine to me.

The Kelso is amazing, so if you have the cash, I'd say go for it. Otherwise, Steele and Jones jackets look fantastic and seem to be easy and friendly to work with.

So if you want a well made highly accurate Raiders jacket, these three (Wested, Kelso, S&J) are the best options you've got.

There is actually no need to change specific changes unless if your a stitch nazi. Stitch nazi is kinda a term used for guys (like myself) who count stitches for Screen accuracy.

So, since Peter copied of a copy Tony Nowak (RIP) made of the original Raiders jacket, the wested is screen accurate. So no need for asking for more details. It's as good as it gets. Box stitching or not. Of course it doesn't hrut to ask if he can cut down the straps. Most likely Peter will.

Just a tip. The jacket will hang lower on the back then a normal jacket would do due to it's weird cut. So, if you order a 25'' back it will hang at 26''. Keep that in mind.

IMO Wested and screen accuracy doesnt go hand in hand (Although the hero pattern is spot on. Just the leather type and the buckles on the straps arent right). I feel like most people buy a Wested to say "I have a Raiders jacket from the people who made the original". If what your looking for is accuracy I would say go for a Bill Kelso. If thats to rich for your blood (it is for most) go with Steele and Jones.

Would anyone consider Gibson Barnes to fit into the screen accurate category?

I'd say it's better than screen accurate - it's an improvement in terms of workmanship and little details like the more solid strap mount. I'm not one for cosplay so exactness has never been my thing. :Plymouth:

Thanks for the thoughts. I have always loved the look of the Gibson Barnes and thought they looked top notch.

Limited leather options on the G&B. Looks very dark brown to me. They used to offer a seal brown instead, but I don't see that choice on the website anymore.

G&B had a good variety of shades of goatskin when I was there two years ago.

I have Indy jackets from G&B, Wested, S&J, Kelso and US Wings. I like all the jackets and would be hard pressed to say one jacket was best over the others. I am another member who is not a cosplay type and like them for the Indy vibe they project as a retro style jacket. I also order them a size up and longer than the movie jackets to fit how I want the them to fit on my body type as compared to how the jackets fit on Harrison Ford.

If you are looking for screen accurate, the Kelso, S&J and Wested Hero (with mods) would be the makers to narrow your search down to.

It's very close design-wise.

As was mentioned about the quality, it's more durable than screen accurate jackets in terms of leather and construction. The Raiders fit remains true. In other words, the shoulders are dropped, the body is tapered, and the collar sits off of the neck for the proper look.

Keep in mind that chrome-tanned leather doesn't show wear over time like vegetable tanned leather. My only (moot since I own one) gripe is the A2 collar. Just my $.02.

Appreciate all of the recent feedback, but the seeing as the original poster has never posted again and hasn't been on the board since June 4th, don't know how much it'll help him.

I was wondering if Steele & Jones will soon be added to the Vendor section of the Indy Gear home page?

For me as of now there only three jacket makers that are really pulling off the Raiders jacket.

Bill Kelso Relic Hunter
Wested Hero Crispe or Shrunken Lamb
Steele & Jones - which will be my next purchase most likely
