You know, it's truly interesting that you would post, at this time. I have loved all the pic's I have seen the ABLRadiers, but it is yours Croft that finally pushed me over the edge -- just absolutely an amazing hat and looks perfect on you! W>

You truly won't be disappointed.
And I'm honored that my pic's helped you along, over the edge, and the wait begins.

Thanks for the compliments.

It's a 8' Joe Strain, funny thing is I owned for two years or more before I even started cracking it, it's kinda fun.

Oh, I know I won't be disappointed...the funny thing here is you mention the wait. What is weird about this to me, is that in the past with my "Crusade,'' "Train,'' and then "Skull," I was really patient and calm about the entire experience...with this one, I am already marking my calendar, like a prisoner in a cell awaiting release :anxious: ! I hear whatcha sayin, I was lucky on my wait time, was cut about in half, my block size was open, so John made my ABL, and let me tell ya, when he posted in a conversation with someone else that, Oh by the way Croft yours went on the block today, you couldn't wipe the smile from my face.

Water repellent, HAH, I avoid water on my Penman. Hate getting it wet, oh a little light rains ok, but if they call for down pours, well my AB beaver CS comes out, my older AB is probably coming your way soon for a cleaning and re-block.

I'm sorry to say in a few days I will be taking a step back from interacting with all forums. I don't know for how long but I need to step back. It takes up too much time and is very stressful dealing with some. I'm very sorry because I have met some great people because of forums but I also have had to deal with some real horrible ones. If anyone have any question about my biz or genral hat care question you are more then welcome to contact me via e-mail info@penmanhats.com or call 971-246-1832

There is no hat I own that gets more comments than my Penman "Temple". Seriously at least one person a day when I wear it says "That's a great hat!" Even the younger generation. One kid today in his early twenties or late teens said "Nice hat. It gives you an Indiana Jones look!" Which of course I had to tell him it was exactly the type of hat it was. Always impressed by how impressed others are when they see it.

Hello everyone! This is my first time posting on COW. I noticed this thread and wanted to chime in. First off, my name is David. I've been a huge admirer of John, hat making skills for some time now. Having gotten to know him better recently, I have to say how much admiration and respect I have toward his craft! I recently sent him my Indy IV AB that Steve Delk had made me back in '08. It's been through the grinder and back ad has kept up beautifully. However, for the past several years, I've had it tucked away in a box in a friend's rear shed. I had moved from the humidity of South Florida to the bitter cold of Chicago. (Don't ask lol) While in storage, that hat's been exposed to heat, and humidity.. dampness.. leaks of all sorts and God only knows the kinds of critters that may have stumbled inside that box. Sheesh Anyway, John and I spoke about the idea of having that hat refurbished, and I have to say, I jumped on that idea! I sent the hat to him having no idea how in heck he was going to get rid of so much wear and tear. However, from what he recently told me, I't made a great comeback and I can;t wait to get it!

I'll be sure to post my photos as soon as it comes in!

Welcome windycityindy (like your call name) you won't be disappointed with John Re-blocking service. He recently did my original AB that Mr. Delk did for some time ago.
The hat came back better than ever, even fit better.

Can't wait to see your refurbished lid.

Welcome and excellent news. Can't wait to see pics as well.
I also have an AB Steve made. I love the character it has so don't plan on a reblock any time soon but when I do I know I will send to John.

Do you by chance have a before pic to show us?

Well Jeremiah , not sure who your question was directed toward, but I took some pic's today
of my AB re-block.
From the pictures it's hard to tell the reason for the re-block/major cleaning. John said that this was one dirty hat, and I'm not talking fullers. It just looked in bad shape. Shape was was fine, just the over all condtion.

The same time I took the above photo I was experimenting in the back woods, trying to get a shot of me, my ABL, and my HK-USP .45 auto, aka Lara Croft. Trying to get the right shot, but alas, my camra just doesn't do multiple shots and at the same time on a timer.

At no time was anyone behind the camera. :anxious:

Anyway, this shot was nice with the sun in upper right corner. And of course a current shot of the ABL.

The ABL 'Raiders,' is truly one unique type of hat and without question, shows just how talented and versatile John Penman is when it comes to the art and craft of fine hat making! When I received mine, I was in awe! Here was a unique and raw hat as compared to John's usual offerings which are truly refined, sleek and of full form. The beauty of this difference shows the ultimate vision and talents of Mr. Penman's talents. He, with this hat, has replicated the 'original movie 'Raider' hat,' as we see it in our eyes, our hearts and our dreams. No frills. No finishing work. Simply a hat of the period, as perceived, by the original costume designer and the film makers of "Raiders of The Lost Ark."

So, in conclusion, just as John Penman has shown himself as a fine hat maker, who can recall and design to customers needs with a complete and composite product that rivals all others, he can also pull a complete '360' and deliver an item that is but of dreams.

Outstanding, is he not  ? W>

Wearing mine today, as a matter of fact.

The ABL has taken a solid position in my top 3 and frequently gets grabbed in preference even to #198. (6 year old beaver Penman Raiders - reblocked twice).

Probably the best part of this hat is the fact it looks better once it's been used and dirtied up a little. If you are looking for a tough hat that has "the look," your search is over. :TOH:

The Penman post 'em up Pages....The Adventure Continues...

Post by cm289 »

Behold! Dark moss raiders with black ribbon! I ordered it in August and John called me last week to let me know it was on the way. Funny, when I first checked the tracking # last week USPS said it would be here today; I didn't bother checking again until this morning and discovered that it was actually delivered Saturday and had been sitting on my front porch since then! D'oh!!! That's what I get for always entering thru the side door. Luckily I live in a nice neighborhood.

Anyway, this hat is amazing. Soft, lightweight, excellent fit. And the hatbox is a work of art also. Very pleased! Thanks John, great work!

Just a heads up to all my customers. Be careful when buying one of my hats "second hand" from someone who has re-blocked one of my hats. Re-blocking a already made hat isn't as easy as it would seem. If not careful you could mess up the brim specs. Meaning, taking a brim that was for example: cut at 2 5/8 on both sides and then because of poor blocking end up with a uneven brim. I have seen this happen a few times by amateurs trying to re-block a hat. So, please be careful when buying second hand.
