Post by Texan Scott »

Last Crusade kind of has its own version of the 'streets of Cairo' fedora, take a look....

Yeah, to me, instead of being an 'Crusade SOC hat,' if you will -- this one is more on the lines of the 'Stingy Brimmed LC hat.' And, I am not trying to be cruel with this statement -- it's just the hat looks a bit warped here compared to the 'Motorcycle chase hat,' etc. Just my two cents on this one. W>

I like it, man! It's not the Raiders hat. By this point in the movie, it is supposed to be a well beaten in hat. Doesn't have the wider brim. Maybe it's shorter by 1/8" or so, but it still has its place.

Contrary to a pristine fedora, worn in, it seems the more it is distressed the better it looks. jmo.

I understand your point and you certainly have all rights to like it here, I just prefer the hat in LC in three particular scenes: 1) 'Motorcycle Chase scene,' 2) 'Venice Pier,' and 3) ...during the opening gambit with the fade from Fedora placing his hat on younger Indy's head to the first shot of Ford with his on the ship attempting to retrieve the 'Cross of Coronado.' Again, it's all in how a person perceives things ;) . W>

In some of those final scenes in LC, the hat looks like someone took a pair of scissors and hacked off the sides of the brim.

Exactly. [-(

I understand they were trying to get light on Ford's face for the scenes, but that brim was cut WAY to close.

Which scene or scenes does Ford where the 'hobo' fedora he's wearing in all those promo shots while sporting that blue jacket? ;) (I know it's not blue. My US Wings looks the same when photographed around dusk.

I doubt any, as I believe these were publicity shots for the "Official (if you will) Indy'' hat for the purposes of sales! I may be wrong, but these shots (yeah, there are a few more then just 'the one,') pop up from those offering the (again) ''Official(lly licensed) Indy" hats. W>

The brim in that scene looks too short to me, which is why I also don't like it. :)

Just curious; when members talk about the 'motorcycle chase' scene hat in LC are they speaking of the fedora Ford is wearing during the actual chase or the hat(which seems different to my eye) right afterwards when the Joneses are arguing about which way to go? I like both hats/bashes but the post chase hat has a deeper center dent where as the chase hat doesn't. Thoughts?

Are you guys kidding?! I LOVE this hat! The style is every bit as iconic as the Venice Pier bash! Those deep crown dents are magnificent (perhaps emphasized by overhead studio lighting), and the much-maligned 'chopped' side brims may be attributed to the curled sides and the angle of the camera. Man, I wish my HJ Poet looked like that! :TOH:

Note the shallow crown dents. That's as deep as they go. :?

No, not kidding. I don't like this version, and never did. STILL don't. [-(

Of course, I've said that for years, so nothing new there. ;)

I AM a fan of the Venice dock scene hat, though. :M:

I always wondered why the Grail temple hat appears to be rounded on top (almost like an open-crown hat), whereas the normal profile of the Poet exhibits the distinctive humps that are such a trademark of the Indy style fedora, per my avatar pic. :-k

After studying the film and all the screencaps a zillion times then eventually bashing my S&J '38 into this fashion, it's my opinion that the hat has a center dent but it's only in middle of the top of the fedora. There seems to be no in dention creased into the front (above the pinch)that would give it that "hump" appearance that's noticeable in say the hat Indy's wearing during the argument at the end of the MC. Also in the Grail Temple scene it appears to me that Ford's wearing the hat tilted back on his head which from the right angle would make it appear rounded.

I think he is referring to the publicity stills with the Dorfman hat used for so many of their sales promos, etc. W>

I was referring to the publicity/promo pics of Ford sitting on the ammo cases alone and with Connery. After more research I've discovered that the hat in question was the one used during the Airplane/car chase in LC.
