Indy's Teaching Hat?

Post by Castor Dioscuri »

We know that Indy wears a brown hat when he embarks on his adventures, and we know that he wears a gray hat to travel, but what does he wear when he teaches?

Considering that Indy's teaching attire so closely mirrors Connery's Last Crusade getup:

Wouldn't it make sense that he wears a matching hat to teach...?

:D  :TOH:

*P.s. Yes, technically Indy wears his adventure hat when he teaches (as seen in The Last Crusade), but food for thought nevertheless!

What's frightening is how much older that hat makes HF looks.

Also interesting that HF in CS was a full decade older than SC in LC. I guess the hat really worked to 'age' Henry Sr.

You mean, what type of hat does he wear out the door when he goes to school in his suit?? A proper use of the hat would be outside and in lobbies, etc. but not in the place of work or in private spaces...so he would not wear his hat in the classroom...

But as you answered, in LC he was wearing his brown fedora with his brown suit that day...so I guess he wears a hat the proper color for his suit...

Yeah, indoors? You wouldn't wear a hat.....LOL

I think he has a grey for most of his more "formal" events, and normal work, and his brown for his adventure work...Generally speaking, that seems to fit the patterns...

It does but as we have seen, Indy does wear Brown suits while teaching too.

Indy's gray "travel" hat in Raiders is seen when he's in what may be his best suit, which is the navy blue. He wear both in the scenes that would make sense, historically, to wear them. 1. On a plane (people dressed for that occassion back then), and 2. A planned meeting with government officials. So, I don't think his gray fedora would be his "everyday hat," for on-campus work days. That's his special occasion hat. Even in CS, it's relegated to travel duties, and travel was still a bit of an affair in the 50's.

I think LC tells us pretty much what we need to know. He wouldn't go to work with 2 hats, so a brown fedora (clean and neat) would be his daily hat. Given that his teaching attire seems to reflect his adventuring gear in color scheme in all classroom scenes throughout the series (I know, some say the LC suit is gray, but it's an earthy gray or mixed with brown at the least).

Given that Indy is always seen in tweed for the classroom scenes, I would have to conclude that none of them take place in warm weather. So, it's possible that Indy wears a straw hat at such times, but could still wear the brown fedora if he sticks to tan suits or natural linen.

That's my thinking, anyway. Definitely no bucket hats for Indy!

I think some of the tongue in cheek humor intended in the original post was missed... :-

Makes me think of an old joke... "So a horse walks into a bar..." "...but who opened the door for the horse?" "...why are there horses roaming free in that town?"

I totally agree with you, it's exactly the same I thought.

Which makes the brown bat for field work make sense since at the time in history men replace their good hate when they got dirty and relegated the dirty hat to use when working. :)

The men in my family had 2 hats..... a daily hat and a 'good hat' for travel and church going back (in my personal memory) 3 generations in Southern Ohio. They were all railroad men until my Dad left the railroad and went to work as an accountant for Goodyear Atomic.

The 'daily' hat was just that, the 'daily' hat, and was worn for all daily occasions, be it a trip to the hardware store or yard work. It was cleaned and reblocked/rebuilt when required, then worn until it got a hole in the felt. It was then replaced with a duplicate hat and the cycle repeated.

A new 'daily' hat was worn out of the store when purchased and the box was never taken as it was never used after the purchase so why clutter up the closet with an empty box? Us boys then fought over who got the old hat for play. ;)

The only 'sacred' hat in the house was the current 'daily' hat Dad/Grandpa/GreatGrandPa were wearing at the time. The old hats were just that....old hats.

The 'good hat' was the same hat year in and year out, as it was ONLY worn when dressed up, traveling, or going to church, so it was never replaced as it was never used that much. It was usually kept in the hat box it came in and stored on the top shelf of the closet.

These are the hats you see in antique stores or going for BIG bucks on ebay, as they're usually almost 'NOS' hats that were only worn on special occasions. Very few of the 'daily' hats survived as they were considered either 'tools' or used clothing and were tossed out.

Like I said, that was the practice in MY family. :TOH:

Mine had 3. The good hat, the everyday hat and the yard work/fishing hat.

When he died I got the yard work hat. Still have it. :)

I agree with this entirely. The only thing that contradicts it is when Indy and Marcus travel in LC.... Indy is still wearing his brown fedora.... :-k

Interesting. So was the good hat a more expensive better quality hat then the daily hat? Or was it just worn less so it looked nicer?

I have a feeling that, unless you were particularly well off, the 2 or 3 hat cycle was typical back then. Much like shoes, at least in my family.
