Whats up with the "turn"
new here, and I have done some reading, and found the FAQ about the "turn" but I am still
unclear on what you are doing here, the brim is Dimensionally Cut, so if you rotate it the front and back would not be centered even as the sides are narrower than the front back, is that what you are trying to do? why? Sorry but I cant get my head around this.

Re: Whats up with the "turn"
The turn is basically warping the brim or distorting it so that there are curves which flare up and give it the SoC look.

Re: Whats up with the "turn"
The hat is turned before being creased. So the front pinch is still centered but the longest dimension of the brim is to the right of the front pinch over the right eye. Rotating the hat also causes the brim to look uneven and assymetrical and gives it a more interesting visual appearance.

Re: Whats up with the "turn"
Adding to what has already been said, here is an excerpt from http://indygear.com/cow/viewtopic.php?f ... 234#p87234" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; that I wrote many years back looking at it all in great detail. This was before Blu-Ray but as I watch Raiders in high def, the analysis/opinion still holds true. I'm sure other details have been noted over the years. I just tried my Fed Deluxe on and it still looks exactly the same. I was never able to get the center crease in a tight pinch down towards the ribbon as I would like. Probably due to the thickness of the material. - Enjoy
---------------
It has been observed that the bow of the hat is slightly towards the front of the head in Raiders. This is not observed
in any of the other movies. The cause for this, I feel, if from the hat being turned. I am only going to discuss the turn and what
I see from it.
The Brim
I truly believe the brim of the Raiders hat is as flat as flat can get when the hat is setting on a table (or office chair).
It’s only when the hat is placed on the head that the head “deforms” the sweatband. This combined with how the hat
is placed on the head and the dimensional cut will cause the classic Raiders “swooshes” that we see and take on
a completely different appearance.
So, what exactly are we supposed to see?
The first thing to look at is what is happening over or above the right ear. There is a very pronounced swoop that starts
almost in the back of the hat. And, peaks over the eye and then starts down and doesn’t stop till it reaches
the brim front.
Picture courtesy of MK
On the left side where the bow is at, the brim does something different. It folds or bends up towards the side of the hat.
It’s different from the right side. There are some shots in the movie where the brim on this side seems rather flat.
I personally believe that it’s due to wear-and-tear or not turning the hat.
So, when the hat is viewed from the front, there are two different shapes going on. One side is straight and flat and
the other side is swooped up.
The front of the brim has a few unique things going on. First, is the additional little swoop over the right eye
of the wearer.
The second thing is a small hump in the brim around the forehead.
Finally, the back of the brim is rounded all the way around. The felt actually dips down slightly before it makes
it way back up and ends.
So, these are just some of my observations. If you are like me, you are never satisfied with the look of your hat and
will spend countless hours in front of a mirror tweaking, pushing and adjusting. Hopefully, what I have learned
will help make your time a little more productive.
High Regards,
Pyroxene

Re: Whats up with the "turn"
You get this effect when you pull a round hat over a long oval shaped head (like mine), so I've never been a fan of the 'turn' myself and when ordering a hat I request it NOT be included in the build.

What's with me agreeing with Michaelson so much today?
I'm with him on this as well. I think it more of a way to get the look without going through any of the discomfort…in my case its an old HJ that doesn't fit—or fits EXTREMELY tight—so when I pull it on, I get the swoops that everybody is trying to achieve…and sometimes a headache.
The other theory, along with the round over long oval, that gets tossed aside is that with the heat and weathering the hat may have shrunk or been ordered smaller to keep on during action sequences.
Though I'm sure a turned hat is more comfortable to wear than a tight one.

Re: Whats up with the "turn"
This one got me when I ordered my first Raiders from Garrison without knowing anything about the turn. I have a long oval. When I got the hat I kept turning it on my head to "fix" the brim but then the crease was wrong. I thought the guy must have been drunk when he made it. I tried rebashing it to fix it but couldn't get the old pinch out. After enough struggling with it I finally contacted him and was informed what the turn was.

Re: Whats up with the "turn"
I have a question about the turn and my new Advintage fedora... How much turn to turn?
Please mind the unbashed look and PJs haha
First no turn - http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd15 ... mage_7.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Second slight turn - http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd15 ... mage_6.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Third more turn- http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd15 ... mage_5.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The ribbon will have to be moved if I stick w the third one.
I did the turn in my fed IV but this one is a little different
How should I know when the turn is good ?

Since every head shape is a bit different I guess it's good enough when it's good enough for you.Heyjude7 wrote:How should I know when the turn is good ?
