Soft Cowhide from Wested - What is its undertone?
Greetings. Does the Wested Soft Cowhide have a gray undertone, or is it brown?

Can you narrow it down some? What leather are you looking at specifically? Most all cowhide is soft after the initial break in period.
as another option, if you like cowhide with great undertones, you might like this as well, thin or thick:
http://indygear.com/cow/viewtopic.php?f ... 41#p858841" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
the last page is especially useful for cow.

Soft Cowhide from Wested - What is its undertone?
On the Wested website, they have a leather option listed as: "Soft Cowhide." I can't narrow it down more than that. Sorry. I'm just asking what color the leather is under the finish. I'm just asking about that. I've got other jackets in cowhide, goat, lamb, chicken, and horse. I'm just wanting to know what the color will look like on this particular "offering" from Wested after the finish wears off.

I think Tex was genuinely trying to help there. No need to get snippy. Also, this is a family forum so keep it classy...

My apologies. I didn't mean for that to come across as snippy, or vulgar for that matter. I thought he was being helpfull, too, and I thought I was being funny. I guess I can be a little gruff without realizing it. Maybe it's my age.

No worries. Sometimes written word comes off a little harsh. Carry on!!

Re: Soft Cowhide from Wested - What is its undertone?
The reason why I was asking is because Wested has:
2 types of duatone leather in what they call, Novapelle- dark brown and copper
pre-distressed hide
lamb touch hide
seal brown cowhide
black cowhide
I am not familiar with "soft" cowhide, but generally, wested's cowhide tends to be on the thick side, except for lamb touch, which is thinner. Generally, the undertones of cow tends to have a warmer color than the chrome tanned lamb or goat, if that is of any help. People tend to go thinner for the Raiders jacket and thicker for LC, although the LC jacket was most likely made of lamb.
Anyone have the pre-d "Jurassic" lamb? Sounds interesting. One leather I'd like to see back in the barn is washed goat. That was great stuff, save for the undertones.

Re: Soft Cowhide from Wested - What is its undertone?
The washed goat is nice. I have one of the old ROLA's that, I think, were being made in Pakistan at the time. It's the first one I bought. I washed it in hot water about a dozen times. Wore it for a few years all over the place with a lot of time out doors in the elements. It got a nice patina and all sorts of grain. Now it has this antique look, with warm undertones. I think the die from the liner created that when I was soaking the jacket in hot water. It's really changed. I had no idea it would end up looking like this when I bought it. I've had a horsehide ROTLA, have a novapelle LC/CS that I'm not too crazy about (but it's still brand new after five years/sometimes I wonder what it would like like if I were to just give it a beating), and am considering a regular goat in a yet-to-be-determined pattern. TOD would be nice, but I guess that ship has sailed. I got out of this hobby when the Hero was coming out, but for some reason, I found myself walking by the closet more often these days. It's like a bad habit, you know. You put down the debit card for a few years, try wearing regular, cloth jackets like normal people, but then end up coming back like a junky. Before you know it, you find yourself standing in your kitchen wearing a T-shirt, sweat pants, white socks, and an Indiana Jones jacket, looking for your shoes and keys so you can drive one of your kids to Wal Mart. I was wondering about that cowhide they have, but those heavier jackets get old. They really do. I'm thinking maybe to just go with a goat skin and just let time do it's thing; you know, put the alcohol and cotton balls, sand paper, brown Peckards (not being vulgar, there is a "d" there/family thread, you know), and hot water away. It's got to have something to do with tax return season, you know?

Well, whipwarrior, I answered my own question about how novapelle looks when it ages when I just now saw some pics you posted a while back in HD. Man. Awesome. My LC was custom made with specs I got from some guy's post here on this forum somewhere around, well, I think four years ago maybe, I don't know; maybe three. Just to think, I never wore it much because I didn't think it would ever end up looking anything but plain, like it does when it comes out of the bag. I may just have to start sleeping in this thing.
Re: Soft Cowhide from Wested - What is its undertone?
My novapelle CS is from the very first batch when the hide was introduced by Wested in early 2008 (this was even before they released the copper novapelle option). I ordered the jacket in March and received it in April. It was perfect right out of the box, except I highlighted the seamwork, pockets, and collar with ultrafine steel wool to enhance the detail. Those HD pics were taken last January during a photoshoot for a new Indy fan project. Funny thing is, the megapixel camera actually shows more detail than you can see with your own eyes! When I saw the pictures a few days later, it was like seeing a whole new jacket -- and I've been wearing the thing for years!

...sounds like all the jackets of the barnyard....goat, cow, horse, sheep, ostrich, deer, armadillo and horned toad...? Now that would be some skin, would it not?

How about a beef jerky jacket? The thought ever crossed your mind?
