Re: The Penman post 'em up Pages....The Adventure Continues.
I asked my question on the 11th , John. He's been on line several times since.
Knibs/John, can you tell us what's on the COA?
With the photo of Steve from CS time period so prevalent in the photo, it would be interesting to know what's said with this new iteration of AB.
Thanks
Regards! M

5 days ago you mean. Todays is the 16th and you asked on the 11th. Talking to yourself getting dates mixed up, you are getting old.
Re: The Penman post 'em up Pages....The Adventure Continues.
John is correct. Sorry, but I've been pretty busy and haven't checked COW as often as I normally do... and when I DO, it's usually to check PMs.
Jeff, it is 2.75" on both sides.
Michaelson, I blurred part of the COA out for security reasons, as I didn't know if John wanted it out there or not. But if you go to http://www.penmanhats.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and click the AB section, you can see what it says. It basically just gives a brief summary of the hat and how Steve and John started working together.

I corrected myself, if you took the time to notice.
Like I said, he's been on line several times in the past 5 days, though.
Thanks for the reply, knibs. I understand the 'method behind your madness.'

Re: The Penman post 'em up Pages....The Adventure Continues.
Totally understand and agree. It's John's call.
So, if I understand John's post above mine, the answer is 'no'.
Ok.
I guess it would make it more 'exclusive' for someone purchasing one of these great new AB Legacies, so it's understandable....but it sure would be nice to know.
Anyway.....understood.

So if I am not misunderstood, every AB fedora is a cristal skull fedora. Am I right? And if that is the case, that fedora is like a raiders and last crusade kind of combination hat?

Re: The Penman post 'em up Pages....The Adventure Continues.
That's not correct. Adventurebilt itself grew out of Steve Delk and Mark Kitter's efforts to make the best Raiders fedora out there. The company (or rather "companies" since there is an AB and an AB Deluxe) operated under its name making hats from the first three films, as well as other high quality fedoras, for some time before being chosen to supply the fedora for the fourth movie.trancoss wrote:So if I am not misunderstood, every AB fedora is a cristal skull fedora. John Penman's Adventurebilt "Legacy" fedora is a Raiders fedora. Although John will eventually make the Crystal Skulls fedora using the Adventurebilt block, I understand he will not be doing that until Steve Delk retires from the business completely.

John Penman's Adventurebilt "Legacy" fedora is a Raiders fedora. Although John will eventually make the Crystal Skulls fedora using the Adventurebilt block, I understand he will not be doing that until Steve Delk retires from the business completely.[/quote]
So, John is making hats for two companies?
Does he have four arms or something?

Re: The Penman post 'em up Pages....The Adventure Continues.
That's pretty much it.trancoss wrote:So, John is making hats for two companies?

He makes his own Raiders fedora under the Penman Hats brand in either beaver or rabbit, and in multiple colors, using his own block design, AND he makes the AB Legacy fedora using a different block and the special lightweight dark brown rabbit felt he obtained just for that hat.
In addition to the Raiders fedora (both the hero and seaplane hats) and the TOD and LC fedoras, he also makes his own "Skull" and "Train" fedora using his own block and methods and eventually will take over the US Adventurebilt brand and will make the CS hat using the original block design and Steve Delk's "tricks" (whatever those may be) that make the film hat difficult to copy.
Now THAT's multitasking!!!

Re: The Penman post 'em up Pages....The Adventure Continues.
Thank you to my PR guy again. Just one thing I need to add or be clear about. the Advenutrebilt Legacy collection is just that. A collection of Indiana Jones specific hats. Thee will be no options with these hats. First one up is the Raiders (which you can order now) in the hero brown and thats the only color I will do. Later I will add other Indy hats like the hero CS and the train travel hats (using Steves martial, blocks and secrets). Some others I will add to the collection like Young indy, Tolts hat, the fedora guy hat from LC, etc , etc. again, these will have no options. example. Can I make a dark moss young indy hat? or a CS in pecan. Yes but not in the ABL only using the Penman brand will there be options. The ABL will be the only way the AB brand will continue once Steve hangs his hat up.I will not be doing any style hat using the AB name.
I will still be offering my versions of all the Indy hats I do now. You can have them in any color I offer with different ribbons, etc, etc. All the Penman hats including the indy will be done as pristine as possible like my customers know I have done in the past. example of my madness. My Penman Raiders will be as SA as possible but will be a clean up version of that hat. no floating stitches, etc, etc. The AB Leagcy Raiders hat will be the more SA hat with the floating stitches , etc, etc. Now we are talking about 5% difference but I never liked coping poor craftsmanship and putting my name on it. AB being the Indy hat maker of them films and Steve being the guy to Raise the bar when it comes to SA Indy hat specially the Raiders hat..I thought it works out best that the most SA Raiders hat using that new felt of mine makes sense to do it as such.
Ok, now that I went on for some time here. I hope things are clear or as clear as mud.
I think I might have to do a write up showing the difference between two hats. stay tuned.

A ribbon should be sewn on with all the stitching work as hidden as possible so it looks clean and neat. The stitching to tack down the ribbon that raps around the hat should be done on the very bottom for two reasons. First to be hidden and more importantly to keep the ribbon from showing the sweatband stitching that is underneath. The original ribbon was sewn with the stitching about halfway from the bottom of the ribbon. Making it easier to see and also letting the ribbon slide up showing the sweatband stitching. It was either done by sewing machine and is what I think how it was done or it was just sloppy work.

Re: The Penman post 'em up Pages....The Adventure Continues.
I've always assumed that Swaine Adeney was asked to make several identical hats as part of a movie costume in a very short period of time, (i.e. immediate delivery) so they didn't bother (or didn't have time to) take a great deal of time sewing the ribbon on properly, hence the loose floating tack stitching.

I don't think it was due to time frame. As I see other hats he made and the stitching is in the same place. This and the fact that they are placed right were most sewing machine stitching normally goes. Most sewing machine that are made for sewing hats ribbon can't get down that low. That one of the reasons I sew by hand. There are some things a sewing machine can't do as well a human hand.

Re: The Penman post 'em up Pages....The Adventure Continues.
Ok, so let me see if I have this right.
Your AB Legacy has the floating stich, just like the HJ in Raiders.
But is it the way your doing the stitching while it's the same but better at the same time, I mean will the stitching eventually show from underneath the ribbon?
I mean yours won't be "sloppy" will It.

Even John's version of the "floating" stitches are meticulous.
Compare the following:
Herbert Johnson factory production - (Note loose floating stitches mid-ribbon)
Penman Raiders (note small, tight stitches at the bottom of the ribbon.)
Penman Cairo (note evenly spaced, larger but tight "floating" stitch mid-ribbon.)

No. My dad was a Captain in the infantry about 70 years ago but when I graduated from college in Canada in 1980 joining the military wasn't what people my age were doing. We were lucky enough to live in a relatively conflict free period in our history. The friends I had that joined did so mainly because they could drink at 18.ChrisMD wrote:Excellent!
