Here's an "oldie" but a goodie. Made for myself, in 2008. Six (6) inch open crown. Rabbit (actually a "hare" darker than the photos). Unearthed sitting in a box, on a shelf, after almost six years. Guess the maker?

Garrison. Im pretty sure Garrison made their hats with that kind of ribbon for a while. Mostly they where a sand color though.

So? I've been staring at my hats for over 40+ years now....LONG before Indy appeared.

This looks a LOT like one of my first PB Indy's.

Not AB and to early to be a Garrison. Could be PB but that is Schiff ribbon and doesn't look like how PB sew their hats on or what they use. I'm thinking it could be a JPD or amateur.

On closer look, you can see the ribbon sliding up and showing the sweatband stitching. It's sewn by hand and I'm going to say not JPD and not PB. Amateur is my guess.

Who ever it is they are on a good start but needs better tools and work with better material.

I am going to guess PB too. As for the sweatband stitching showing. He probably just sat on the hat once or twice. My AB does that now too, I am always pulling it down over the stitches.

It's not the pulling up that is giving me the hint on who made the hat. It's the pattern the sweatband stitching that giving me the hint. Also along with other things that pointing me in that direction.

How did you cheat?

Excellent guesses, all! And yes, someone has speared the correct maker (well, perhaps close).

BTW: This topper was never sat upon (there were those in the late 2000's who believed sitting upon it gave that Cairo crush look). The maker was given "props" in his day; but he did not make too many. The block is Steve Delk/Lamode.

Well, one cannot argue with a little help; although perhaps hoping for something a bit more esoteric. Upon reflection, the maker was in the business, here and there, for many a year.

Michaelson, you old sage! Glad to see you are still shepherding this lot. As you would tell us (as I recall), Jimmy Pierce began his hat making training at Peters Brothers. No wonder his work has that familiar look.

LOL! Yep, still hanging my hat here. Good to see you around again.

Yeah, Jimmy apprenticed at PB. I actually met him when he was working for a hat shop in the old Ft. Worth Stockyards back in 2005 on a visit to the town.

I still own one of his hats as well. It was reblocked by Steve Delk in 2008, then Northwest Hatters recently put a new brim edge on it for me, so it's been around for a while.

I guess I was right but what pulled me away from JP is that the ribbon wasn't put on right. Look at the last photo. Look how the lines aren't straight but slanted. That shows me the ribbon wasn't prepped before putting it on. That it was just pulled tight and then sewn on. To do it correctly you have to shrink the top half of the ribbon.

Well, they're built like trucks, so I stand by my first guess.



Actually, I was going by the ribbon and the thickness of the felt. That just looked like the old 'bullet proof' felt that Peter Bros. used to produce back 9 years or so. Heavy stuff.

My JPD black is beaver and one of the nicest hats I own, but it has to be below 55 degrees before I even think about pulling it out. It's a cold weather hat.

Agree with BO, the original ribbon work left something to be desired on mine too. As I said above, I sent it to Steve who reblocked it to a style reminiscent to the old military hat style used in 1898, and replaced the ribbon with a thinner black version. I kept the original green JPD liner, though.

Your $100 price tag is a steal in the classified. There's a really nice hat, used as is or as a base for another iteration by one of our hat makers.
