is pharrell making the fedora a comeback?

Post by trancoss »

Hi all,
I am new in this forum and I do not even know why it took me so long to join!!
When it comes to fedoras I am a newbie in every sense and I actually found this forum doing research for an indy fedora. :TOH:
So a few days ago I ordered a raiders fedora from Penman and now I'm in the waiting process. :)
Anyhow, the reason of this post is because my wife was watching the voice and I just realized that Pharrel was wearing a grey fedora which was very nice, and it made me think that he wears them quite often and it seems like it could be a comeback (a very nice one, by the way).

There is a related topic here: http://indygear.com/cow/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=61708" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The consensus seems to be he gets his hats from Nick Fouquet in Venice Beach. Some are pretty decent, but some are a bit "horrendous." Nonetheless, it's nice to see someone in the "celebrity" world wearing something that doesn't look like a reject from the Caddyshack prop department.

Good move buying one of John's hats. You won't be disappointed - except you'll probably want more than one. :TOH:

I think Pharrel wore a very floppy crunched fedora during a big concert a few months back. I don't listen to him, but I've heard him in Despicable Me. But the hat he wore in the concert doesn't look the greatest. Fits him though I guess

I'm with Ridgerunner. It's nice to see a proper hat on tv other than on TCM. He wears a decent looking hat even though it looks like that stiff, modern, pressed felt to me. I am willing to bet we start seeing a lot more real hats in general.

Not all his hats come from that maker. The hat he is famous for isn't.

You mean The Vivienne Westwood "Mountain Hat" aka the Arby's Hat?

(Which he paid 95 pounds for and then sold on eBay earlier this year for $44,100.00 to . . . Arby's.)

That's the one I had in mind when I wrote "horrendous."

This one's a lot better, but I think the concept of "turning" a hat has eluded him.

Ive never heard of this guy but he sure seems to enjoy attempting to be trendy. Almost like he's mocking the hats.

I think the general view of the media and most of the public is that any hat with a brim that goes all the way around and isn't obviously a cowboy hat is a fedora. :roll:

I know what you mean. The proper term In my opinion to call them is "floppy hats". Doesn't mean a fedora, just a floppy hat with a brim that goes all the way around.

I dare you to not tap your feet to Happy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6Sxv-sUYtM" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Definitely trendy, but not mocking. I think he's a genuine hat wearer.

As I mentioned in the other post about pharrell, he wore the mountain hat to the Grammy Awards, where most of the outfits are more 'costumes'.

The mountain hat is a modified campaign hat and the money he raised through the auction was given to charity.

Agreed :)

I believe that as well. I do not think I have seen any pictures of him without any kind of hat.
As of trendy, I know a company was interested in start selling the same kind of hat he wore at the grammy's, so there you have it.

The other day he was on tv wearing a grey fedora, very nice one, by the way

Don't judge a book by its cover/when you assume....

Pharrell is definitely a "hat guy."

Not only is he a well established artist in his own right (the above "Happy" is a great song, and his earlier work with N.E.R.D.), he's also one of the most well known producers. He's had his hand in some of the top pop music singles over the past 10 years. If anything, the guy is a trendsetter.

Well, I did judge a book by it's cover. From the outside he looked to me like another guy who throws on a hat to be different. Apparently I was incorrect in that assumption. The moral? I learned something new about someone!

Will I most likely assume in the future? Yep. Alot of times in my line of work that's what keeps you alive!

Cheers!
