Last Crusade Easter Egg

Post by knibs7 »

I don't know how I missed this. Maybe it's been talked about before, but not to my recollection. I just realized that the Temple of Doom jacket makes an appearance in Last Crusade. It seems to be the jacket Vic is wearing for the desert tank scenes.

Just thought it was worth mentioning.

Well spotted! Can't miss those tiny pockets. Is it visible/noticeable in any scenes in the movie?

Really! And not just the pockets -- collar, etc. Truly a good find and one that I never would have picked up on -- till now! What hat is Vic wearing? Looks almost like the 'Dorfman' to me? W>

I also noticed how "droopy" and thin the jacket material is. The ToD jackets where made from a thin droopy material, like Raiders. Totally not an LC jacket. I think this is pretty cool. Also, didn't they recycle some whips from ToD for LC? I wonder if any of the hats where reused in LC....

Yeah...probably isn't, but it doesn't look as defined as the HJ hats Ford was wearing and there are publicity shots from 'LC' with Ford in the 'DP' in order to sell the hats -- thus my thoughts on the shot! You are probably right, and in reading the posts from above, it is quite possible that this is an HJ carried over from 'TOD,' as well...because it does have a much softer pinch then the 'LC' we see Ford in--in 'LC.' Just my two rubbles :TOH: ! W>

Great pics and thanks for posting. :D Man, Vic and Harrison could have been brothers! Also looks like Vic is wearing a Raiders/ToD web belt vs. a lighter colored LC web belt. If I recall, didn't Vic also wear a Raiders' jacket in Tod the same way he is now wearing a ToD in LC? It would seem that the ToD jacket had more usage and overall 'screen time' in LC than it actually did in ToD, lol! ;)

Actually, I think Terry Leonard wore the Temple jacket for the Raiders Truck stunts. Therefore, the Temple jacket has been in 3 out of the 3.25 movies

How could a TOD jacket be used for the truck chase in ROLA? TOD was filmed three years later.

Just because the movie was filmed three years later doesn't mean that jacket wasn't around before then... It was supposed to be a stunt Raiders jacket, and then ended up being the main jacket in Temple of Doom.

According to who? :-k

I don't recall any discussions of a ROLA stunt jacket being used as the TOD hero.

Best I remember the truck drag gag jacket is possibly a Wilson from the rejected jackets originally bought by DNL.

You don't need to recall any discussion about the Raiders stunt jacket being the Temple hero. It's right there in the picture. Besides the obvious small pockets, it has the exact same distress marks on the pocket

Interesting thread indeed and good eyes, ;) . Given the jacket's history, its a wonder it didn't end up in K.O.C.S as well, lol. Is this particular Raiders'/ToD/LC jacket in Wested's personal collection? Seems like it should be the one in the Smithsonian (if its truly the one). As a side note, you can even tell that both Vic's and Ford's trousers are a slightly different shade w/ Ford's being slightly darker/more brown. To me, it just screams the color provided by Costume-Base (according to what I see on 'film'):

mojoturbo's pics:

viewtopic.php?f=16&t=61638&hilit=Costume+base+trousers" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Again, great thread & pics,
Aaron

Well, I think we all know the danger of relying too heavily on screen grabs.

Case in point, assuming the jacket in the top two pictures is the same jacket, to me, the pockets look completely different. More pointed in the left picture, more rounded on the right. Using those two pictures alone I would conclude two different jackets, though both had been distressed similarly.

As for the bottom right picture of Terry, the yoke width looks different to me than in this picture.

I'm talking about the jacket at the end of Temple of Doom. There were 2 different versions. One was "looser" in the village scene and going to Pankot and then there is the "leather shirt" at the end. Terry seems to be wearing the latter.
As for the pockets being more pointed in the left picture... you, yourself, just said that we know the danger of relying too heavily on screen grabs

We've had heated arguments on here regarding the interpretation of screen grabs over the years. I can never get too excited by interpreting screen grabs, it's just so dependent on lighting, angle and interpretation. However, the first jacket photo does look promising. The small stunt jacket pockets in Raiders were explained various ways including that the jacket used was one of the greatly disliked Wilson jackets used for stunts.

Terry's sleeve is wider and the padding on his back would never fit under the jacket HF is wearing.

Excuse my ignorance and lack of picking out minute dust particles..lol..BUT isnt this site supposed to be the largest Indy fansite? "i would say so"...SO you are telling me that instead of arguing "cough"..I mean..debating about all these things over and over for the next 40 years, there is NOBODY on this site that worked on the films? OR Anyone here that knows someone in the costume department from the films??that can clear up all this mess?

You arent going to prove much of anything from screengrabs..They just too small and lack of detail..EVEN bluray..IM still pretty new at the whole Indy "thing"...and I dont get all worried with every little detail..Matter of fact im surprised that someone hasnt made a prop of that one leaf in that one scene in that one Indy movie..REMEMBER THAT LEAF??!!!.. :rolling:

Yes, over the years 'we' have had much interactions with those that were involved with making the films, though those that worked on the film are not members to my knowledge. Most of that information is chronicled on the Indygear main webpage here http://indygear.com/igjacket-ToD.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

That's why I'm surprised by knibs7 assertion that a TOD jacket was worn in ROLA. Other than what he's seeing on screen (call it an argument "cough" debate ;) - I don't see what he's seeing) there's never been mention of this in the past by any of the players involved.

But that's largely the fun of this site. A member sees something, brings it up and we discuss/debate/argue endlessly. :)

Interesting, Knibs... You've pretty well convinced me. The pocket size, distressing, vent bottom, sleeve seams and yoke bottom lined up... When it's on the front of the truck, his raised arms have pulled the yoke up, which happens in other scenes of Raiders, so the larger yoke looks smaller and more Raiders-like.

I'm not so sure the actual truck drag (under and behind) jacket could have survived to look like the TOD jacket... Awful lot of friction, but they may have managed that with movie trickery.

At least a possibility that it was seen by the TOD costumers as a ready-distressed jacket for the screen.

I never noticed the pockets on the Bantu wind dock jacket... Possibly the same or were there 2 large yoke jackets lurking around the Raiders production?

I'm not saying that this was definitely the one and only jacket used for the truck chase. I'm just saying that I believe those two pictures of Terry show him wearing the Temple jacket. I have no doubt that they used more than one jacket for that sequence.

For clarity, I think it will be helpful to refer to jackets by their movie titles. There's often reference to the ROLA: 'temple', 'Hawaii', 'Imam' and other jackets. Simply saying it's a Temple jacket as opposed to a TOD jacket can further muddy the conversation.

At the end of the day I don't give a hill of beans if the two jackets are the same or not. I don't find the grainy picture evidence in the least bit compelling, but Kyle's entitled to his opinion as much as I am.

What we do have to be careful of is any authoratative definitive statements about conclusions. As a site we have an obligation to be clear with what is conjecture/opinion and what is fact.

Well I don't think anyone got/will get confused because except for the pictures of Terry, the only ones I have posted are from Temple of Doom. Same with referencing. It would be one thing if I had previously mentioned the opening sequence in Raiders and the jacket he wore in the temple, but there was no mention of it, so I don't really think we have to worry about confusion. And you're right; we are both entitled to our own opinion. So, I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. :TOH:
