New Hat Day!!! Johnny's Mystery Fedora

Post by Johnny Fedora »

It's been a while, but thought I'd pop in here and show off my new Indy lid.

Image

What does everybody think? Note: it's a selfie so there's a bit of parallax distortion but it's still a serviceable look at a fantastic lid.

Cheers!

Despite the dreaded "Fedora Selfie", the hat looks great! Beautiful color! I'm guessing Penman LC in Rabbit?

It's actually an Indy 4, but the make is a mystery. Any guesses?

Regular AB? Or perhaps a Penman AB? The Bow seems to look just like my AB. :-k

The photo is a little fuzzy, but I think the nap looks to long for an AB or Penman. I'm going to have to say a Garrison.

i think garrison doesn't offer indy 4 fedoras, but anything's possible , right ?

northwest hats, maybe ?
love the color of that felt, anyway (just a tad lighter than your usual indy)

Northwest or Garrison?

Not with THAT ribbon. ;)

The picture might be messing with the color but it's the same as a vintage HJ Indy.

Keep guessing folks...

My guess is a Steele & Jones CS. But even if I'm wrong, I would suggest going ahead and telling people what it is before they lose interest in the guessing game.

Lose interest? Did you just see size of the tumbleweed that just rolled between us? It was as big as a house.

Further, if there's anybody left 'round these parts who remember me, they know that I don't trifle with Indy Fedoras. If I post something and invite people to guess what it is it's with a good reason. ;D

That ain't JUST a regular old Indy lid. So dissect it, you might learn something.

Considering the color and the way the felt appears (on my screen), I would suggest 'old school 'Indy-Gear' and say this is one of Lee Keppler's hats! After seeing, and examining one of his hats a few years back in San Antonio, Texas (met a gear-head there), this does look like one of his creations and whether it is, or not, it is one nice looking hat. Thanks W!

A Lee Keppler lid...I never thought of that. Ok, the color is throwing some people so I think more pictures are warranted. Reminder: John, Steve and Marc make their hats just a tiny bit darker (so as to lighten with age and use, so some might have forgotten but the color of the fedora at the top of this page is a match for a vintage HJ Indy. Anyway, I'll take a couple of shots outside tomorrow and I'll remind people to again check out the ribbon. (Cocks eyebrow in a decidedly Spocklike way)

I understand you wanting to educate people about a particular hat and I'm glad you thought enough of us to share it with. I was just trying to avoid that awkward situation where people have stopped caring because you go so long without telling people what it is.

The "thickness" of the felt makes me feel "Jersey Jones" and his Fieldmaster/Camptown. The color is off from a Jimmy Pierce Design.

Well first I thought it was going to be a Baron hats but he makes his Indy hats shorter than what I see here. I was then thinking Art Fawcett with some of his recently acquired 1950's felt bodies. Other than the list I gave I got nothing. Yojimbo Jones???
If it isn't a custom made hat and is off-the-rack. Then this could take forever. It sure doesn't look like a DP beaver though either and looks too short and straight sided for a lockhatters Chelsea. If you found yourself a vintage Stetson that would be pretty cool. I haven't seen any of the new ones out and about. Anyone else?
