Well, I had success at the gun show today!

Post by ChrisMD »

I managed to pick up an Indy gun that has LONG been on my bucket list for MANY reasons. I personally think I did very well on the price. It is a 100% matching, non import marked, ____________.

Pics coming tomorrow! There was a 3 hour delay on background checks because of how big the show was. Picking it up tomorrow. Didnt feel like waiting around and being extra late for camping.

To be continued!

Thanks will do. Figured I would torture everyone by withholding the info. :)

Anyone care to guess?

We'll, you mentioned in another thread you were going looking for a S&W so I'll guess the obvious.

Well unfortunately no. The only one I found was a BEAUTIFUL US Army specimen that I could neither chop nor afford.

Im back from camping and headed to pick up the new addition in a few minutes. Ill leave you all with this:

Well, based on the dog dish in the foreground, we know where his dog has been.

Where'd YOU stay, Chris?

Here she is:

Numbers matching (minus the mag) 1943 BYF P38. No import marks, all original German markings intact.

Nice one!

Looks like the original German blue too, versus the Russian re-do's.

Excellent! As Michaelson said, a great shooter - comfortable in the hand & reasonably-priced ammo, too.

Thanks gents! I was VERY wary of a reblue and I thoroughly checked the thing. This was actually a bring back (hence no import marks). Glad the Russians never got their hands on this gem. This guy had some really good stuff. I got the price down further because the detent spring in the takedown lever is missing. Oops one less matching part haha. Oh well, it'll be a good shooter and im not worried about the spring. Probably about $2 at Brownell's. Ive fired lots of these and now I finally own one.

And M, Indy was surprisingly good camping this week. He only spilled the water in that dog bowl about 300 times.

Look how big he is getting

Hey, being the breed he is, I'm surprised he didn't try to get INTO the water bowl.

He loooooves the river for sure. We plan to bring him back up here in a few days to get into the lake.

This P38 is calling my name but it is stashed away from the lady at the moment. She doesnt understand the "cannot pass up" thing.

So here are my Indy guns currently. The Taurus and Israeli Hi Power are my "stunt doubles". I want a real FN Hi Power, and a 1917 but the Taurus .38 fits the holster perfectly and is a good partial look alike. My Indy gun collection is modest, as I really never thought about getting all of them. I pretty much collect mil surp and modern stuff so the new niche for Indy guns is a really fun break from that. Left out are a few bolt action rifles also seen in the movies.

So I plan to replace the spring and detent next week hopefully, and get a new recoil/hammer etc spring kit put in as well. Many times with these old guys the springs are pretty shot out and could do with replacements. An entire new spring kit is like $15 so it wont kill me. I'll just keep the original springs in a baggy. Expect a range report hopefully sometime next week!!!

Hey ChrisMD, just an info thing. The Taurus in .38 would be a K frame in S&W frames and the 1917 model you want is a bigger N frame, believe me there is a difference. Just wanted to help out. :TOH:

Nice score!

Careful when you replace the recoil springs. If not removed correctly, it can damage the frame.
Also, they usually run pretty well on Winchester White Box ammo.

They are all nice, but the P38 just takes the cake. I'm not a big fan of semi-autos, but that is one of the few I like.
The Taurus looks nice, nicest I've seen in a while.

Thanks buddy! Still haven't shot the P38. Been really busy transitioning to the new job and traveling. No time for love! But soon enough. The Taurus has been a good 'holster filler' since it fits so well. In fact when I went out last night on a few errands in my Indygear it accompanied me instead of my normal piece. It was pretty cool being able to utilize the entire ensemble. Only problem with last night was that my usual Indy pants have completely VANISHED lately and I squeezed into a pair 2 sizes to small. I took little Indy the puppy to visit some old coworkers at Macy's and he pooped on the floor. Bending down to clean that up was TENSE. I was afraid the rear end of the pants was going to blow out like an old truck tire!!! :rolling: [-o<
